Falbrav was a horse I really really loved, he could do it at the top level at 1m, 1m2f, 1m4f and he also had two amazing races with High Chaparral in the 2003 season and just as Kalanisi was beaten twice by a hd by Giants Causeway, the same happened to Falbrav in those races with High Chaparral, yet he was considered the worlds best horse in 2003 and here are a couple of group one wins from that year, just a couple of the eight he won in total, the first is 1m2f Juddmonte and then he dropped down to a mile for the QE2 at Ascot before then going upto 1m4f in the Breeders Cup turf in his next race against High Chaparral, by the way after the Breeders Cup he went to Hong Kong to win a group one in his next race.
He won group one races in England, France, Italy, Hong Kong and Japan. https://youtu.be/ckIBYhLI5WA. https://youtu.be/mEz1Q9cvkIE |

Manuel, with regard to El Gran Senor and the 1984 Derby. It is rather forgotten that the horse went on to win the Irish Derby next time out.
But in that race, Eddery rode him much more postively inasmuch he goes to the front around a furlong out and sweeps away to win. Had Eddery rode him like that at Epsom he surely would have won, but one suspects that conections had some doubts over his staying power and wanted to coas him home if possible. But they clearly learned from Epsom and the horse was not messed about with at the Curragh!! To think, though, that only two years later we again saw the best horse in the Derby, Dancing Brave, beaten through a jockey rather over complicating things. Both defeats still rather haunt me, not only because I backed both horses to good money but more because my best friend, who was 15 years older than me and is sadly gone now, backed both animals to win life-changing sums ante-post in the winter. Indeed, he even had more on DB than EGS because he thought his Derby bad luck had all been used up in 1984!!! |

There are probably very few on here who can actually remember that the great El Gran Senor hammered
an excellent 'yardstick' in the Irish Derby...who went on to win the Arc - the great Rainbow Quest! Like the rest who recall Secreto beating him at Epsom - I haven't got a clue WHY that happened... especially as the form was shíte with a bum, Mighty Flutter in third and a 250/1 poke who I backed E/W in 4th (no 365 back in the day )...though that horse went on to win the Melbourne Cup! |

Knight totally agree with what you say, I think both Jockeys in their respective derbies made things far more difficult than it needed to be.

So this one went very wrong for me, BUTLERS CABIN winning the 2007 National Hunt Chase, this one really really hurt and I still remember it now, on the Thursday of the festiva; I had two £1 lucky 15's, I started one with L'ANTARCTIQUE AT 33-1 AND THEN IDOLE FIRST AT 25-1 and guess who my best bet of the day was, it was BUTLERS CABIN who then goes and wins for me at 33-1, thing is for some reason I put it in the wrong Lucky 15, will never forget Herbie off here asking me before he ran in his race " Why did you leave him out of your best lucky 15 " my answer was " I don't know " next thing Butlers Cabin goes and wins at 33-1!!!sick that day and still not forgot what I did.
