This was my biggest win in horse racing terms, not really one for putting huge amounts on horses, always kept to 100.00 maximum bet and normally a lot less, on this day I had done 3x5ew doubles and a 5ew treble, The first horse was a horse called Mass Rally who went and won a York competitive sprint at 14-1, giving me 75.00 onto the next of the three horses, which was Scatter Dice in the Cesarewitch at 66-1, just hoping to get a place if I was honest and then the following happened, just so you know the last of the three got hammered so just an each way double which for a forty quid outlay returned 5400..ish, by the way Scatter Dice I think was drawn around 33 in the Cesarewitch field so virtually the outside of them all.

I was at Royal Ascot in 2014 and was so lucky to witness the victory of Kingman, didn't back him as couldn't see any reason why he should beat Night Of Thunder after the 2000 guineas, that said the real memory for me was standing at a certain angle and just watching Kingman unleash that fabulous turn of foot, he went just as he got in my eyeline and what a burst that was, enjoy.

I went to my very first Charlie Hall Chase day at Wetherby in 1992 and in all the years since I have only missed three, this one as far as betting goes was the best, this race had a questionable couple at the head of the field and the rest were not amazing either, so decided to take a punt on the 40-1 outsider Ballybough Rasher and as they say the rest is history, I was a real form student most of my racing life but something just looked wrong about this race and you know what I got lucky, no form helped, just some intuition and luck.

The Champion Hurdle of 1966 was my first visit to a Festival day at Cheltenham. I was aged 21 and must have taken a day off from university to go with father and brother. John Haine was a childhood friend as his father and mine were in the same class at school together and remained close friends so we made the journey to watch John ride Salmon Spray. The only vantage point we found in tatts was halfway up a staircase where there was a window looking down the course. It was a foul wet day so we got a very poor view of the race until they turned for home. Two chestnuts with big white blazes. Flyingbolt and Pat Taaffe towered over John on Salmon Spray but the flat race style of the latter won the day with Flyingbolt, who had won the 2 mile chase the day before, fading to third.

Sage, must have been great to see Flying Bolt, amazing to think that at their bests he was rated 17lbs above Kauto Star which is just unthinkable and of course Arkle a couple of pounds ahead of Flying Bolt.

Sometimes in racing you see things that you just cannot believe and even after the race you still scratch your head and cannot find anything to justify what you saw, I have been a form student most of my life but cannot explain what happened in this race. We have a horse rated 109 winning the Juddmonte beating a fantastic champion of a horse rated at the time 130 thats right 21LBS difference in a group one. The only thing you could possibly think is that the champion never run to his best and yet he ran to the pound with the third horse whom he beat in the previous race which was the Coral Eclipse, someone explain this race away.

Two performances stick in my memory.
We got out first TV in 1963. I watched the English Derby on BBC in 1965 when Sea-Bird won. I remember running out to the kitchen to tell my parents I had seen the best horse ever. Monthjeu won the Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh in 2000. That was the most impressive performance I've seen on a racecourse. He pushed his way between horses and rocketed away. "RESULT STANDS After a Stewards Enquiry, the placings remained unaltered." "held up in touch, always travelling easily, boxed in over 1f out, improved to lead between horses well inside final furlong, not extended" |

Kinscem my friend was a huge fan of Montjeu and I was a huge fan of Giants Causeway, we often had discussions about what would happen had they met over 1m2f.

Have to say this is one of the best novice chases I have seen and so sad that he never got to fulfil his potential through injury, here we have GLORIA VICTIS winning the 2000 Racing Post Chase carrying top weight 11st 10lb, just jumped this lot into the ground and then went to the Gold Cup before falling and breaking his leg when in the lead, could have been something very special, enjoy this.

seeing all 3 of best mate's gold cup wins . for some reason they are almost scoffed at . as other trainers with much , much more resources have found out its not easy is it ? keep trying and you might one day find one that could jump fences as good as him .

Enjoyable thread, Manuel
Wingman was one of my favourites. Devastating turn of foot. |
|
By:
great thread...
this one always sticks in my mind Pebbles absolutely laughing at a quality field including a Derby winner in the Champion Stakes 1985 Pat Eddery looking round for non-existent dangers she was a tremendous filly for the legendary dancing trainer Clive Brittain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlBKdFFaSfk |

By:
Yes a stunning performance N-east.
What was the million dollar bonus Commanche Run was chasing? |
|
By:
just looked it up
, had no recollection of that bonus Brandybut again just underlines what a fine performance that was at HQ Pebbles also first ever British winner at a Breeders Cup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlBKdFFaSfk game as a err Pebble under a robust P Eddery ride... ![]() |

Back to 1985 for the next memory and the Coronation Cup, this is more about the great Pat Eddery than the horse though Rainbow Quest was certainly top quality, just give this a watch and enjoy, sheer class, Horse and Jockey and remember the second horse won was decent in itself.

This one is purely on achievement basis than anything else, this has not been done since 1985 a horse winning the triple crown, the form of this race is not amazing but the actual achievement is, her 1000gns was excellent and lets not forget she murdered Tryptich in the Oaks but the Leger was a poor field for her to achieve the triple crown, still she went and did it and its not been done since by a colt or filly, enjoy.

N-EAST that performance in the Champion Stakes was fantastic and what a lovely filly she was, she was also the first filly to win the Coral Eclipse.
|
|
By:
Indeed Manuel a top drawer filly, just watched that Coronation Cup victory for Rainbow Quest Pat Eddery at his sublime best
he really was one of the all time greats and so sad to his decline in later years, he would be miles ahead of todays jockey's (with an exception or two) the 70s and 80s a golden era for jockeys (I dont go further back than about 77) though no doubt they would have been pilloried on here on a daily basis! |
|
By:
N-EAST totally agree on Jockeys of that era, Piggott, Eddery, Carson, Cauthen all top class, whilst Pebbles was a fantastic filly whom I really really rate, I think my favourite filly of all time was a little bit better which I am going to put up tomorrow. I am sure you will be very aware of how good this one was.

So this post is about the best filly I have seen in my time in racing and there have been lots of good one's, however this horse had a turn of foot to die for and her record is fantastic, the horse in question is MIESQUE who was just something else, I am going to put up a couple of her races but the first link you see gives you details on just what she achieved, enjoy.

This post is about the most amazing winner of a race you will ever see, I backed it in doubles and trebles and needed it to win to keep my bet alive, during the race I actually threw my bet in the bin and yet after the race I had to go and take it out of the bin, never ever seen another horse win like this, it was an egg and spoon race at Doncaster, nothing special, but never forgot this race from around 1984-5, the horse was called RUN OVER, enjoy, by the way my bet went down in the end regardless.

The next one is the classic match between Buck House and Dawn Run in 1986, so at the Cheltenham Festival Buck House won the Champion Chase and Dawn Run won the Gold Cup, they then met in a match over 2m4f at Punchestown, lets not forget no horse has won the Champion Hurdle and The Gold Cup since Dawn Run, from memory I also think both these horses died in their next race, this races is a classic racing moment.

This really was the one that got away for me, I really fancied PEEPING FAWN to win the Oaks in 2007 and backed her at 33-1, sadly she just never got the run when needed and flew home but could not get there, she then went onto reverse the form easily with the winner in the Irish Oaks as well as winning four in a row after the Oaks.

Well its about time we bring in the amazing Desert Orchid, what a fantastic chaser he was but not just in level weights races, he would go in handicaps giving masses of wait to really decent horses, this one stuck with me when I was younger, this is Dessie trying to give lumps to two decent horses so brave would not give in.
https://youtu.be/KVGKJhlGqsw |
|
By:
I also meant to post this with Dessie winning the Irish Grand National off 12st giving two stone to everything, enjoy

There are times when some handicap performances stand out and you remember, these are two of the very best you could see, its opinions as to which was the best, its all about opinions, so then this is CARVILLS HILL winning the Welsh National in 1991 and then Denman winning the Hennessey in 2009.

This next video is the 2011 Lexus Chase after which I had my bet on the winner at 25-1 for the Gold Cup. I believed that this performance was far better than the credit it got, I even put it all over this forum and most people thought the horse had no chance, I rated the winner after this at around 174 whereas the official handicapper had him around 168 and I was convinced I was right and so in the end I was proved correct, it doesn't often work out like this but its nice when your view is vindicated.

Now we move onto mighty Dancing Brave and his famous Arc Win and that amazing turn of foot and this against a star studded Arc field, swooping on the outside and flying past Bering the French wonder horse, this really was a superstar of a horse and to think how lucky Khaled Abdulla was to have had him and Frankel, two of the very best ever.

Pat Eddery was such a fantastic jockey and was so cool so many times on so many good horses, the question is did he get this one wrong or not, El Gran Senor was such a fantastic horse and have you ever seen a horse two furlongs out cruising like this in an Epsom Derby, however...........this video is extended TV coverage enjoy it all.

One of the most amazing rides by Eddery was the Juddmonte International of 1998. I first saw One So Wonderful in her debut race at Kempton ridden by Oscar Urbina. She was by Nashwan who was never the best sire but out of Someone Special, a Grade 1 winning daughter of Habitat. On that basis I backed her in every single race she ran in. Looking very backward at Kempton she started second favourite but shot clear to win easily. When they crossed the line at York I thought she was third but somehow Pat Eddery had forced her back up on the rail to win by inches.

By:
Sage it was a fantastic race and to this day cant believe he won going past the post, typical on the nod stuff but a great race
