Finally got the first 100 up today. I think Pauling missed a trick not teeing it up prior to Aintree. Hard to believe he couldn't have sorted out one penalty kick. Would have been better going in with that landmark in the bag.

He said today that he should have held on longer, but absolutely no guarantee, if he had held on for longer, that he would have done any better than third. It would have just meant more horses contending for the places at a later stage.

Of course the counter factual can't be proven. However horses don't win looping the field a mile out, and going clear. Never mind the grand national and the notorious extended run in. Either total brain fade in the moment, or he genuinely had no idea how best to ride the race. The fact he still stayed on for third suggests he was comfortably the best horse in the race, but obviously it can never be proven beyond doubt.
