Cotai Starlight down to 1.05 and that didn't seem a crazy price. Near miss.

Brian, Stott was just hands and heels in the closing stages when he still had 2 or 3 strikes left, maybe he thought he had it in the bag?

Unfortunately it went downhill after Cotai Starlight's narrow miss...
A change of tactics for Chapel Island on this big step back in trip. He was keeping on from off the pace and in with a chance of a minor place when not getting the clearest of runs inside the final furlong. My Mate Beattie, who was dropped in, never figured and finished well beaten. 2026 Running P/L: +48.16 pts |

Post Rider
Post Rider hasn't looked in much form this season, latterly running over longer trips, but it does mean that she's now off a mark 2lb lower than when winning over a mile at Newmarket (good) last October, and perhaps the return to a mile on good ground can prove the catalyst for a return to form. This is an ease in grade for her, and as all three of her career wins have come at around a mile when ridden prominently, blinkers being tried again may just sharpen her up. |

Hijo De La Luna
A rare selection over hurdles for the thread. Hijo De La Luna didn't offer much at Ripon (10f, good) last time when perhaps less emphasis on stamina wasn't ideal, but prior to that it looked a respectable effort at Carlisle (11f, g-f) when finishing third of six, in a contest from which the second and fifth have won subsequently, while the 4th has run well in defeat since. How the selection shaped then could suggest that a stiffer test over hurdles may be preferable, and also that a sound surface may suit better, so the forecast rain is a concern, but a chance is taken at big odds. |

Virgin, a couple of the main firms were offering three places on the 4.45, and Post Rider did go with more zest for the blinkers being tried again to finish 3rd, albeit ultimately finishing over 5L behind the unexposed winner.

Gonna Fly
Gonna Fly looked a potential Stakes horse when winning a one-mile Newbury novice on his debut last autumn on soft ground, but he was outclassed when in dropped in trip to 7f on good ground when reappearing in the Greenham Stakes. He won on good to firm when returning to action over two months later at Windsor when upped in trip to 10f, but that was a three-runner contest run at a crawl. Of his two handicap starts since, he didn't look entirely comfortable racing around Chester (10.5f) on good ground but wasn't beaten far into fifth, and last time at Glorious Goodwood (10f, g-f) he was readily outpaced before going on again in the closing stages to finish 9th of the 14 runners, beaten just over 4L. He now has the chance to race on rain-softened ground again and it will be interesting to see if he can step up on his form shown so far this season. |

By:
Redredrobin
Redredrobin probably needed her first three runs back this year following a ten-month break, but ran a lot better at Brighton (7f, g-f) two starts back in first-time cheekpieces when pulling clear with one who came good for James Owen at the fifth attempt following a stable-switch. Redredrobin's effort can probably be marked up given she disputed the lead into a headwind in a contest where the other principals got cover. The fifth has won subsequently. The selection didn't run well last time in a 0-70 at Wolverhampton but she endured a wide trip and the jockey reported that his saddle slipped. The majority of her wins have come on a decent surface including three times over C&D, so a marked deterioration in conditions would be a concern, however, she did win a five-runner class 4 handicap at Epsom on soft ground back in 2023 when rated 15lb higher, so does handle an ease. |

Cheers lead on. The 2 NRs took the field size down to 11 but a few firms still pay out on the 4th place.
I was initially disappointed he didn't at least finish in the three, albeit he was only beaten just over 1L and it was a rise in class for him, but the ground is probably still a fair bit from being proper soft, officially good, g-s in places, and 'only' 2.86 outside standard. |

Wild Bessie
A speculative pick on Wild Bessie, who faces a tough task on official ratings in this Group 3 contest. She's of a little interest based on her reappearance C&D win on soft-heavy ground back in the spring when she defeated a 92-rated Ballydoyle filly, who had the benefit of a reappearance run behind her, and who subsequently comfortably won a Limerick maiden, before going on to finish runner-up in a Group 3 at Leopardstown, which has seen her rating rise to 102. The third also subsequently won a Limerick maiden, and then finished runner-up in a handicap at the Galway festival, taking his official rating to 85. The selection's effort in victory can probably be marked up given she had contested the pace into a headwind. She hasn't been up to Group 3 / Listed company in two starts since at the Curragh / Killarney over a mile, but each time on good ground, and interesting to see how she fares here on ground currently described as yielding, yielding to soft in places. |

By:
Danger Alert
Danger Alert posted a couple of decent efforts in defeat last autumn over 5f / 5.5f on soft / heavy to make the frame off higher marks at Sandown & Bath, and is of interest now the ground has turned soft again. He has only managed the two starts so far this year, both on good to firm, and now returns from over three months off, on his first start for Adam Kirby, so fitness has to be taken on trust. He can be sluggish from the stalls, but hopefully the first-time eyeshield can have a positive effect in that regard. |

By:
A couple of selections with potentially soft ground angles but not sure the ground was ideal for either as it turned out.
The 7f G3 f & m contest at Cork was run in a time just 0.37 outside the RP standard, and judging by the way they were finishing off, the surface looked pretty decent. The times at Yarmouth on the straight course were on the slow side despite the going being changed back to good to soft and there reportedly being a slight tailwind. Nothing explosive from Danger Alert on his debut for Adam Kirby, never able to emerge from mid-div. The run might have been needed, however, and perhaps he'll be seen to better effect if getting the chance to race on some proper soft ground. 2026 Running P/L: +43.24 pts |

Crystal Pier
Crystal Pier made a good start to her season in May when winning at Wolverhampton (8.5f), and then what looked a good effort in defeat at Windsor (one mile, g-f) when going down by a head to one who has placed twice in Listed company since and is now officially rated 21lb higher. In contrast, the selection has seemingly been disappointing in two starts since, but doubt she gave her true running next time on the July course, and last time back at Windsor when tried again over 10f, she was frotunate not to have been brought down in an incident that saw William Buick pick up an 8-day ban. Crystal Pier has been given six weeks off since so fitness has to be taken on trust, particularly as she's easy to back this morning for a yard whose runners tend not to be missed in the betting, but hopefully she still has some upside and her pedigree would suggest that longer trips could potentially eke out some further improvement, granted she's fine with a bit of ease in the ground. |

Tiberio Force
Tiberio Force's form figures this season don't inspire much confidence but not sure races have panned out well for him on occasions, and he might have needed a couple of runs back anyway following a two month break. He won this race last year on good ground and it wouldn't surprise to see him more competitive back into 0-50 classified company. |

[b]Sunday Sovereign
Sunday Sovereign was a selection on his reappearance back in early-june at Fairyhouse when I wrote: Sovereign Sovereign, a formerly useful sort, returns aged 9 with a mark that has just about bottomed out, and he probably doesn't want the ground to dry out too much back at 6f, however, there were some fair efforts in defeat last season, including on his reappearance when a finishing a close third of 14 at Roscommon (7.5f, y) off an 8lb higher mark, and back over that C/D in October on soft ground under 10lb claimer Zoe McMullan (who rides this evening), when finishing third of 15 having been on a contested pace in a race that set up for a bang-in-form mare to sweep through from off the pace. It all sounds like that Roscommon on easy ground over 7.5f is what he ideally wants nowadays, but given he ran well fresh on his reappearance last season I'm going to take a chance here at the odds with 5 places on offer. ===================================== Sunday Sovereign offered little then under conditions that were likley quick enough anyway. He's back from another break this evening and I have to hope that there is enough ease in the ground for him (ground currently being described yielding, good to yielding), but a chance is taken at the odds now back over this C&D. |

Cheers all.
The time of the first at Roscommon didn't suggest much give in the ground, but Sunday Sovereign (40-1 ISP) still ran well to not be beaten far into 4th. Crystal Pier, for whom the market vibes weren't great, ran poorly, even allowing for being held up in race where the winner was allowed to dictate a steady pace. I'd be surprised if it was stamina that beat her, so perhaps a combination of needing the run after a short break and not acting on the slower surface was to blame. 2026 Running P/L: +60.24 pts |

Treasured Royal
It seemed Treasured Royal wouldn't be long in winning when finishing third in a 3YO premier handicap at Naas (5f, good) back in the spring, particlarly as on that card it appeared that racing close to the far rail was an advantage but she had raced away from it. The form worked out fairly well with the winner subsequently running well to finish 4th of 22 in a valuable class 2 handicap at York, the runner-up finishing a close 3rd in a Naas Group 3 on his next start (for which he was put up 13lb in the ratings, and the fifth home was Midnight Dusk, now rated 10lb higher after bolting up in a Curragh handicap. For whatever reason Treasured Royal hasn't really gone on since, running just okay in five subsequent handicaps, and then finished down the field last time at the Curragh when returning from a break and probably not well drawn. It takes a leap of faith to support her at this stage, but that latest run might have been needed following seven-weeks off, and she is now 12lb lower in the weights than she was for that good 3rd at Navan. The selection is 1-1 at Naas, her sole win coming in a 6f 2YO maiden fillies contest, and while it's a concern that might be her optimum trip rather than today's 5f, a chance is taken at the odds as she's looking well handicapped if being restored back to that spring form. |

Lily Pearl
Lily Pearl is returning from three months off so fitness has to be taken on trust, particularly with her having been weak enough in the betting so far today. She's off interest now back on softer ground as she looked to one to keep on side when pulling away with two others on good to soft last autumn at Pontefract (6f, g-s), on what was her only encounter to date with ground with an ease in it; the third and fourth have both races this season. The selection has only been seen twice so far this year, running okay to finish third at Carlisle (6f, good) on her reappearance in May, before finishing down the field on quick ground at Wetherby (7f) in June, where she reportedly hung badly left-handed. The stalls are on the stands' side this evening so it remains to be seen how that pans out for her from the 8 of 10 draw, with the RP's draw analysis suggesting middle numbers may hold a slight advantage, but a chance is taken here with her being unexposed on softer ground. |

By:
vonclausewitz, well done with Annie.
As for Lily Pearl, she looked rusty here, as the market predicted (ISP 22-1), getting outpaced before keeping on once meeting the rising ground to close up into 5th place. She might ideally want further now too, and perhaps her yard have something in mind at the Western meeting for her. Treasured Royal continues to disappoint, for all dropping back to 5f and track position might not have been ideal. 2026 Running P/L: +56.24 pts |
