Someone will remember a betting magazine ("Odds On"?) in the 90s which had a columnist with a regular systems article where such things were proposed and analysed? The "refining" bit always smacked of the worst kind of back-fitting.
There cannot be much space left for such now - there must be enough people pointing AI at racing data to find such patterns and place bets so as to take any perceived value out?

Odds On had Nick Mordin (of later Weekender and still later Irish Field fame). I've got a pile of them on the shelf, iirc.

I have enough of a maths education to be unhappy about the way he used the same data to build his model and to test it, but he had some fun ideas.
And the Spirit Mixer tip went short enough IR for a reasonable trade-out, so worth having looked at.

1. Great creativity to think of so many ideas;
2. A light and amusing writing style, so we'd read his ideas.
Not surprisingly, his day job was in an advertising agency.

People say he moved to the US or he dropped out of racing/gambling altogether or he died young. Or all three.

Anyone remember "Inside Edge" magazine? Early to mid 2000's, I think.
I've got a huge pile of 'em somewhere - there was a regular "systems" column and loads of sports betting stuff.
Think it became "Poker Edge" later on and concentrated on that on the strength of what seemed to be an online poker boom at the time.
Shame really - it was a decent read.

Best ever paper for systems from ordinary punters sharing their ideas was surely the Handicap Book every Thursday . I would love to get one just to reread again..Modins Winning without thinking on my table as we speak , I must admit I found it complex and boring yet with a few insights...

As An aside anyone got a Handicap book they don't want...
Best part of the Handicap Book was Tim Fitzgeorge-Parker, former trainer of three broken-down platers and self-proclaimed expert in all matters equine, enemy of all innovations made since Queen Victoria unaccountably stopped attending Royal Ascot.
workrider, the most frequent letter-writer I can remember was Jim Adams who eventually wrote a book about handicapping. You could check the second-hand book market.
