Except.......having said the whole thing is a waste of time...it was always my "go to" converstation starter with girls I fancied.."whats your 5 best songs, films, books, etc..." Safe ground, unthreatening and yet the converstaion can go anywhere. Great ice breaker and it ALWAYS worked.

Any post-war British war film.  They were generally authentic with some fabulous actors - John Mills, Bernard Miles, Harry Andrews, Trevor Howard.etc:

Hobsons Choice.  Brilliant performance from Laughton.

Agree with every ounce of that post mate and obviously applies to all the cultures plus sporting fav's.

Also horse racing when we confuse what we think is value for everyone but fail to realize it's only our own personal opinion.

Yes it it - for sure - but the expressions of incredulity at specific exclusions or inclusions is the pointless bit. Everyone who has an opinion, holds it for themselves. Validation of one's opinion satisfies a yearning for credibility that we all have, me included, it's just being human. But I do try to resist it, or at least be self aware. Hayden's point about value in betting speaks to the same emotion.

I also agree with Steerforth.

Shawshank is the number one rated film on IMDB purely by the rating people have given it. It has a rating of 9.3 out of ten with over 3m people rating it. The Godfather is second at 9.3. I didn’t think much to that and preferred Goodfellas as a gangster flick.

9.2 Godfather.

Great Expectations (David Lean version) - opening scene filmed not far from where i reside

Masque Of The Red Death - Vincent Price as the brilliantly nasty devil worshipping Prince Prospero. the best of Roger Corman's Poe adaptions imo.

If and O Lucky Man - Malcolm McDowell at his wide eyed best playing our "hero" Mick Travis.

Apocalypse Now - I love the smell of napalm in the morning - nuff said.

Some people are deliberately contrarian though. Or feel like they give themselves some credibility by saying something immensely popular is awful. It happens even more with music than films.

Angels With Dirty Faces was the electric chair one.
White heat was " On top of the world Ma "
I wouldn't put Shawshank in my top 100 eithr. 200 maybe.
But I agree there is a certain subjectivity about films because they haven't been going long enough.
There will be more of a concensus in 200 years or so. Fwiw 2 films I have watched more than twice (unusual for me )
High Plains Drifter
The Ruling Class.

The problem with this brilliant question is like asking "what is your favourite song?" or even a favourite 5...

It is almost impossible to answer, or even be half right.

There are so many imponderables nobody could nail the answer. It's all just opinions.

So many great shouts on here but we would all probably need at least a top 50 to have half a chance.

When it comes to music......probably a top 1000

Surprised nobody has put up the all time classic Rita,Sue And Bob Too.

Can you even be considered a film critic if this is not in your top 5?

Yes, sure, I liked that one and this one, oh, and a few of the others too, but did I ever watch something that me made think I'd witnessed genius, sheer brilliance and perfection? A masterpiece that was superbly crafted, written and acted?

In film, it was The Godfather (Parts 1 & 2)

On television, it was Fawlty Towers.

Unoriginal but thar ya go Plain

I missed him out earlier.  Robert Newton one of the most under-valued British actors of my time.  Could play any role.  Best Bill Sykes ever.

Another cracking David Lean adaptation Honcho. Newton was a fine actor made over 40 feature films, set the template for playing a pirate !

The Oliver Reed of his day by all accounts, sadly overdid it and pegged it at the young age of 50.

Gene Hackman at his finest in Enemy Of The State.

More importantly though, it would take a brave man to deny the presence of Ted 2 at the top of anybody's list.

Argo - It was Iran, after the 1979 hostage crisis when the US embassy was invaded by revolutionaries - the rescue team pretended to be a film crew. Good film.

A CLASSIC! I’ve been waiting for it to be mentioned… Devil

Caine, “The Bastards! They’re taunting us!”

Afrikaans Soldier, “No no no my dear fellow, they’re saluting you!”

Caine was surprisingly good in Zulu.
Of course the battle itself most certainly didn’t happen in the way portrayed.

The whole cast were brilliant Loyal, my father worked with Caine and said he was an ahole.

Stanley Baker was excellent too, my fav character the old preacher! “You’re all doomed!” Hiccup! Laugh
