I think sometimes it's easier calling great films via actor or actress as opposed to thinking top 5 or 10.

Hanks
Washington
De Niro
Pacino
Hackman

No leading ladies mentioned yet?

A Few Good Men is great. Got to be one of the most popular lines in cinema history.

Same with Goodfellas. ‘You think I’m funny’.

I first saw Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider led by Peter Fonda.  You could see he was different.  He played a geek ( more or less ) who changed as he associated with the grass generation.  Dennis Hopper in it too.  Phil Spector.  Pretty decent film.  Showed in stark reality how the rednecks in the South simply hated anyone who looked and/or behaved differently to their narrow, prejudiced outlook.  At least that’s how I remember it.  Grin

Good Will Hunting superb too. As with Shawshank the film title is a bit crap!

Shawshank (obviously), Silence Of The Lambs, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, Casino, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Robocop, A Time To Kill would a selection off the top of my head.

technically it's not a film but Chernobyl is probably the best entertainment you can get on your telly box. a MUST watch, for anyone who has not yet experienced it. near perfect television.

it's bl00dy brilliant s.kenbo, odd that you couldn't get into it. the last episode (5), the court scenes and flashbacks, is astounding work. Paul Ritter (rip) phenomenal work.

Everyone says how good Chernobyl is. That’s why I’ve tried it twice. It’s good some of the best reviews you’ll see. I just couldn’t get into it.

The Green Mile is another Stephen King one the same as Shawshank.

You mentioned age and I guess Chernobyl is in that spot for me as I was 11 when it actually happened. I recall it happening, in the news but of course the consequences went over my head. But I remember the era enough to know how authentic the production is.

One thing this thread is proving beyond all doubt is how listing "number one" anything in the arts is futile. What is it actually measuring? There can only be your own personal favourite and applying objective qualitative judgement by any other criteria is impossible. If it was measuring the film "listed by most people as their favourite", then OK, but so what? Plenty listed here that always turn up in any list of "greatest" films, but which I have detested with a passion, but that means nothing to anybody else but me.

Top five British black and white films:-

Angels One Five
The Cruel Sea
Ice Cold in Alex
Victim
Brief Encounter

Wot no Hitchcock? It seems odd to leave him out because he pioneered so much.
