It's hilarious whenever they're debriefing the jockeys exclusively address John. Weird setup. Either give the lad his head and step aside or continue on exclusively

Yeah it’s a bit weird, he looks like the old man’s
Holding his hand, he should be doing all the media ??
He looks and behaves as the junior partner?

Seems odd he calls his dad, John?
I could never call my father Pergrine
Report ASonOfWottonBassett July 12, 2025 8:01 PM BST
Doesn't seem charismatic or smart as the old man either but perhaps that will come with experience. Roger Charltons son seems to be handling the succession well.

It's a delicate thing, succession. Millions and millions at stake with some of the wealthiest owners on the planet looking for continuity and assurances over the level of operation not dropping off.
Report punchestown July 12, 2025 8:27 PM BST
Hannon Jnr handled it well.

Looks like he's on safari and about to go trophy hunting

that's what I thought, with a smell up his nose.

Plenty of good stories with succession. Ed Bethell, Harry Eustace, Andrew Balding although much longer ago, Ricard Hannon. The jury is out on Charlton imo. Plenty of success from trainers with no background heritage such as Charlie Appleby, Boughey, Beckett, Olly Murphy. Ex jockeys have a mixed record but Richard Hughes seems to be getting the hang of it after a few moderate seasons. We can only really judge Thady when Big John is truly retired which might be a while. In the past some have gone on too long such as Peter Walwyn, John Dunlop and Sir Michael Stoute.
Report impossible123 July 13, 2025 11:59 AM BST
If memory serves I think Gosden senior took a step back a while ago. Maybe Gosden junior does not feel sufficiently ready or confident to assume a bigger role yet; maybe at the behest of Mrs Gosden. Also, the rich and powerful owners at Clarehaven might not be ready for a change of head honcho.
Report sageform July 13, 2025 1:01 PM BST
Putting Thady on the license does not necessarily mean a step back yet. Presumably Thady has been assistant for some time. Johnson White has been assistant to Philip Hobbs for 35 years at least but only now is on the license as a joint trainer.

Most likely a public school boarder from a very young age. He looks so young and innocent and timid.
Report Cider July 13, 2025 1:19 PM BST
Gosden in his recent interview on rtv was stating that so many of his owners are in God's waiting room, effectively. Clearly this yard are having another really good season, landed on another superstar (possibly two), and enjoyed amazing Royal Ascot. This would be like taking over from the hairdryer at Old Trafford, only one way it can go, and it's not up.
Report Cardinal Scott July 13, 2025 1:25 PM BST
Never mind about Thady Jack Channon is showing that nepotism can work, revitalized that yard and without many middle eastern owners apart from Jaber Abdullah.

Look at Jack Channon's strike rate 24% Superb Stuff.

Just look at the siblings of AOB. It's not easy even with the support and firepower of Coolmore, and AOB at their disposal. Eve Johnson Houghton has done very well. She's more than holding her own in a sport where men tend to have the most support of the rich and powerful owners.
Report Cider July 13, 2025 1:33 PM BST
It's fine if you can improve on what's gone before. That's a 1000 shot for Thady. And his benchmark will always be what his father achieved. Pipe is probably the obvious example.
Report Cider July 13, 2025 1:35 PM BST
not exactly the time for violins though, will always be a rich man wanting for very little.

To be fair Joey has had considerable success and Donnacha has had too albeit at a smaller scale. Joey will succeed Aidan in time and Donnacha is a spare. It's all worked put.

I would have thought that pacifying those mega owners for him on his own would be nigh on impossible when the time comes.

Considering that he is still only 32, I would say that is a pretty impressive record.  When he won the first of his 2 Melbourne Cups, he was the youngest ever trainer to win it.

Great record yes but if you had put up a list of the horse names and asked which race they won, I would only have got Banbridge right.
