Are there any precedents for these misdemeanors in the horse racing world, there was one that looked similar or arguably worse to include lying to the police , albeit years ago....rather than publicly flogged or hanged as a few have suggested this guy ended up with a knighthood.

So a BHA spokesperson commented "We are now seeking to gather as much information as possible in order to consider what, if any, implications there are as a result of this development."
I'll make it easy for the BHA: the clear answer is 'none'. It's completely outside of their jurisdiction and they should bugger off. By way of comparison, here's what happened to Scottie Scheffler last year during golf's second major, the PGA. For those that don't know about him, Scottie's quite possibly the most clean-cut, mild-mannered player on the tour and won over $60million in 2024 alone. And yet at 6:15am on his way to the course an incident happened and Scheffler was charged with felony second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. At 8:40am he was released from his cell and by 10:08am he was teeing off. The PGA did absolutely nothing to prevent Scheffler from playing and neither should the BHA try to prevent Murphy from riding. Thanks, Johnny. |

Playing golf? When has a golfer u.t.i. ever crippled another golfer during competition?

Here's the thing on the one hand you have Ryan Moore who is painful when it comes to listening to an interview, but on the other hand you've got Murphy who is equally painful, to me anyway, because I believe he's fake, he knows that his manner in front of the mic is pleasing to many people, certainly when in contrast to the Moore's of this world and he plays to it, but I don't believe it's his natural way, it's BS IMO.
When you consider all the negatives surrounding him where he has shown a complete disregard for others including for those who have supported him it's easy to put to one side his apparent amiable personna in front of the camera. |
|
By:
I don't wish to be indelicate, but are you a little bit thick? Murphy was nowhere near a horse at the time of the incident, so why are you comparing that to someone being hit by a golf ball?

The problem that all his supporters and apologists have got is that it is a risky business because the chickens are going to come home to roost one day good and proper because it is clear that he's not getting himself straight, these instances are going to keep happening and one of these times there will probably be an instance that is not retrieveable and no coming back from, at which point all his supporters are going to look foolish.

Yes I’m thick. In the words of Blackadder I’m as thick as a thick thing who has a plan. The plan is to keep race-riders safe from fellow race-riders who don’t give a flying Baldrick about the health and safety of their racing colleagues are you seriously claiming that he hasn’t ever, didn’t then and never will again set saddle on a horse whilst u.t.i.
Mr Murphy has form. And contempt. As for his whiter than white, butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth interviews with Chapman? Anyone who is fooled by them is indeed a fool. He works Chapman like a fiddle. |

Not a fan then Poncho?

Once a big fan, but no longer.

I have never allowed personal feelings regarding a jockey's character to affect backing them in a race.
Each to their own |

By:
Who says I have? Are you halfwitted or is it all an act?
By the way, Levey just showed him how to ride at Donny. |

By:
There speaks the"Yes I'm thick" man, which was already clear to most of us on here Mr Judgemental.

While riding in races while impaired would be unforgivable there is no proof he's ever done that.
In view of the extremely long hours, hard graft and deprivations to keep weight down etc is it any wonder that a young jockey wants to have a bit of fun which involves alcohol? He's not a monk! Maybe he needs help on that score but I would say to those on here who want him banned for life, in the real world we can't all be perfect angels like you! |

Oisin Murphy can continue to ride ahead of next week’s court appearance, says BHA
Oisin Murphy: champion jockey Oisin Murphy: champion Flat jockey can continue to ride Credit: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos) Oisin Murphy can continue riding before his appearance in court next Thursday, the BHA confirmed on Friday. The four-time champion Flat jockey was charged on Thursday with driving a car while over the prescribed limit of alcohol and failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside after a single-vehicle accident in April. Murphy was charged on June 19 by post. Thames Valley Police confirmed the details publicly a week later. The police did not comment when asked if the BHA had been informed before Thursday’s announcement. The charges relate to an accident on April 27 which resulted in a female passenger, who the Racing Post understands to be a racecourse employee, being taken to hospital with serious injuries. Murphy missed his rides at Southwell on April 27 but returned to the saddle the following day at Windsor where he rode two winners. In the two months since the accident, Murphy has continued to ride at a high level, winning the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Lead Artist for John and Thady Gosden, and partnering five winners at Royal Ascot, including the Kensington Palace Stakes on Miss Information for trainer Andrew Balding. Oisin Murphy and Lead Artist after winning the Lockinge Oisin Murphy: won the Lockinge Stakes on Lead Artist Credit: Edward Whitaker Murphy was previously banned from riding for 14 months for breaches of the coronavirus travel restrictions and for two failed racecourse breathalyser tests. As part of his relicensing in February 2023, Murphy had conditions imposed on him, including the requirement to stay sober and avoid the use of illicit and social drugs, which would be monitored by enhanced BHA testing. These conditions would be reviewed annually to determine whether they remained in place, according to a BHA statement at the time. Murphy won his fourth Flat jockeys' championship last year and leads the standings in 2025 from previous champion William Buick. The jockey has five rides at Doncaster on Friday and six at York on Saturday. |

It's probably acceptable to wrap your car around a tree whilst half cut, we're not all pertfect after all, perhaps that is the line his defence could use in court.
In fact I think that all subsequent misdemeanours Murphy commits should be categorized as, "one of those things", and he be excused on the grounds of being not perfect. |

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________These conditions may no longer be in place as they would have been reviewed in Feb 2024 and Feb 2025. If the condition to stay sober and avoid drugs has been lifted then the BHA will be unable to do anything even if he pleads guilty or is found guilty by the magistrates. Only the BHA and Murphy's team know if the conditions are still in place . BHA justice is mostly done in secret. AS regards the more serious charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving some posters have correctly said that charges can still be brought but I think this is unlikelyas they do like to lay all charges in one go. To bring this charge the police/cps would need to show that he drove dangerously. It is not enough that he may have been drunk and crashed. They could be waiting for a RTA report but it is difficult to prove without witnesses or camera footage. It could also suggest the passenger is not cooperating with police or said he wasn't driving dangerously. This is all speculation on my part. |
|
By:
So he was charged with drunk driving and subsequently crashed his car into a tree, I would like to know that if that isn't proof enough already that he was driving dangerously when have we seen instances in the past where someone has been found to be a drunk driver and after subsequently crashing the vehicle were in fact found to be driving in a sensible manner

It is not a requirement to prove innocence (thankfully) duffy
|
|
By:
Chat GPT has just confirmed that irons
, it asked me what the weather conditions etc were on the night, and whether the passenger could confirm if he was driving dangerously, which is probnably subjective anyway![]() |

Interesting post Mr Combustible. I'm trying to think of a reason the BHA would remove the stipulation after one or two years. Why not leave it in place?
|
|
By:
Dr G I don't know.
I would imagine he had a very pro active legal team representing him at his licensing. Maybe they said it was against his human rights!! |
|
By:
So presumably guilty will be the plea. That will probably avoid the need for consumption of porridge, but the BHA may not be as generous.
My spread is a thee to six month lay off. A great talent on the brink of implosion, like so many before him I am afraid. |

A very serious matter this, endangering lives - shame on any one defending him.

It's a civil matter. BHA like most governing entities serve only themselves. F*ck all substance all for show.
|

By:
BHA sec "brant you heard oisins out his nut again, crashed the motor this time, blonde in the passenger seat, injured"
Brant "did he do it yesterday at ascot into the queen Anne enclosure during the 3:35?" BHA sec "no, wrapped it round a tree near midnight no where near a racecourse" Brant "then why the f*ck are you bringing it to me then... Where were we, ah yes, try and fit in a few more fixtures on Easter Sunday. That's what racing needs more cannon fodder ****" |
|
By:
That should be the start and end of BHA involvement in the case.
|
|
By:
Maybe that should be the case but that old chestnut " bringing the game into disrepute" is
Going to be applied to Murphy like the Spanish Inquisition. Promising to clean up his act, missing tests, generally taking the BHA for idiots..I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a 12 month ban. Whatever, he's cattle-trucked. |
|
By:
how can the BHA licence an ADDICT ?
after freddie/gibbons case ,if theres an incident involving murphy horse racing would be finished for good in uk, not sure its laughable or sick that plenty on here dont seem tomind if their pilot, train driver, lorry driver, captains on ships/ferries are addicts and if there was an accident they,d just no problem/nothing to see wonder if murphy will sue chappers for outing him as an ADDICT on live tv |

By:
Alcoholism is an illness, he needs help and counselling and not hrown to the wolves.
Having said that, I think a six month prison sentence suspended say for two years would be appropriate and a very stark deterrent for reoffending. |
|
By:
Te first thing that should be happening is for him to begin to show that he is trying to help himself which hasn't happened yet.
For the BHA to do nothing and for the worse to then happen on the racetrack the kind of pile on that would ensue would make all the animal rights, A/C stuff all rolled into one seem like a tea party. What also should be happening and what the BHA would have hoped for to actually do their job for them is for the trainers and owners he rides for to begin to pull the plug on him. Elliott sits on a dead horse and he loses Cheveley Park as it's a bad look, Murphy wraps his car around a tree whilst pi55ed nearly killing someone...no problem!!!! |
|
By:
Good points Duffy.
It’s all very well having sympathy for his condition but the safety of other jockeys has to be the prime concern. For me anyway. |
|
By:
Oh, for God's sake.
Let the law take its course. Unless you have all the evidence, unless you were there, your sanctimonious posts are guesswork. All they signify in the polite form is a poster who has never lost control or - less charitably - a poster who wouldn't know a good time if it came in his pants. |
|
By:
Good point biscuit, perhaps Murphy might use the coming in his pants defence next week in court.
|
|
By:
Well at least he wouldn't need a nurse to tell him it had happened, duffy.
|
|
By:
Hopefully that fact, if indeed it is, which isn't a given considering he spends a lot of his time pi55ed, proves to be a comfort to him.
|
|
By:
Do you actually know for a fact any of these allegations you are making duffy?
|
|
By:
The Saying " never drink on an empty stomach " came about for a reason, I am guessing most of Today's jockeys would be near paraletic after 2 pints.
