I'm as anti 'woke' as anyone, but in my opinion you're seeing it from the wrong angle. If someone sets out to wilfully destroy something that is so important to multiple people, that cannot be replaced, the deterrent to others considering something similar must be very high. Cultural vandalism, and God knows there's been far too much of that from elected politicians already. Yes you might not care about this tree, but it could be something you do care deeply about on the next occasion.
Anyhow, it would be most prudent to await the actual sanction, before passing judgement on it. I absolutely do not trust the judiciary in its current state. They could give a lengthy custodial and suspend it ![]() |

I fail to see why people should be abused and castigated simply because they're aware of social and political issues? Surely that's better than turning a blind eye to intolerance, hatred and injustice?

its a tree after all ,a post on here saying the perps should be cut in half with the chainsaw they used to saw the tree with ,it was a brainless act and I don't condone it but on that day there was a coach crash with fatalities that got nowhere near the coverage!

Well said FOYLES - my view too. And on the point of sentencing don't give them porridgetime or a fine but give them a horrendous amount of community service, like a 1,000 hours, to be rigidly applied by our social work department with no relaxation of the terms until completed. In the environment. Maybe clearing rivers and canals of litter, junk etc; or cleaning up polluted areas and picking up litter anywhere. Consistently monitored and applied. Make their retribution of chronic proportions so they, and others get the message.
And for us, ask ourselves a question. Why do we go full time overboard about one tree when don't give one blog about the Amazon rainforest being systematically, and irreversibly denuded to nothingness? Or, if we must be closer to home, why have jobs of the singers herein not raised concerns about the destruction of British countryside, including the loss of thousands upon thousands of trees, by the now cancelled HR2 fiasco. Well? |

It was a fixed part of a beautiful fixed view, enjoyed by tens of thousands a year.
Paris wouldn't look the same if you took just one tower down. Good luck with a thousand hours of rigidly applied community work. |

don't you just yearn for the days when the usual suspects on here were travelling 300 miles to surround and protect statues they,d never heard off and then cried like babies when they got a good shoeing

Don't say i'm woke you idiot. Cider gives the perfect explanation above but you choose to label people just because you don't agree with this particular likely long sentence.

See how many friends these guys have when they get out...and how welcome they are in Carlisle restaurants
|
|
By:
It was a daft thing to do but unless they can find a clause in the law that refers to specific trees, I don't see how they can get a bigger sentence than the dozens of others who fell trees without permission every year.
|
|
By:
Entirely up to the judge sage, nothing to do with anything previous, the value put on the tree can mean anything up to the max sentence!!
|
|
By:
Yes but no more than the max sentence.

How many morbid individuals cut down perfectly good trees just to sit round a campfire….

Rico proving his ignorance again. a judge can sentence up to and including the maximum for any offence!! HTH

you get the highest sentence if the offence is of the highest standard.

They will get hammered by the judge for pleading not guilty and going to trial, then giving ludicrous lie after lie in evidence. Being idiots posting stuff on social media and multiple text messages didn't help their brief either. Darwinism .

as the REFORM loons have spent the last yr telling everyone trying to set a building on fire with 100,s inside,ISNT ALL THAT ,seems some took it on board and tried to set the UK,s PM front door alight last night, nothing to see here obviously
|

lies mean nothing tbh..they would have got 33% off for a guilty so eg 3yr would have been 2yr so an extra yr means an extra 4mth.

it's the defendants choice, i don't know who done it but if they did ?, they would probably got easy deal for vandalism.
The way the world is going they will probably make a netflix programme out it, strange but true, the world is mad. |

Of course they'll "get hammered by the judge" - the BBC and media circus generated around the case has already seen to that. As for the good citizens of Carlisle giving them grief, well, they will obviously have deserved it.
However the fact remains that they have vandalised a tree. They haven't committed treason, or committed serial murders or glued themselves to the M25 and seriously disrupted the life of a nation. They have stupidly cut down a tree, and even more stupidly, proved themselves to be absolute Grecians dduring their tribal Poor some howard. Can't keep a civil tongue in his some head. |

The two men convicted of chopping down the Sycamore Gap tree were suspects in an investigation into alleged homophobic assaults that took place around the same time they committed their infamous crime.
Daniel Graham, 39, from Carlisle, and Adam Carruthers, 32, from Wigton, were found guilty last week of cutting down the iconic tree at Hadrian's Wall on 27 September 2023. Nine days earlier, a man reported being doused in icing sugar and subjected to verbal abuse by two people at a layby in Cumbria often frequented by men seeking sexual encounters. The CPS dropped the case more than a year later, but emails confirm police prepared a file on Graham and Carruthers for prosecutors. |

I don't know enough about "the tree" was it in a protected area ? Under English National Heritage watch ?, I don't know.
If it was, the sentence will be quite heavy for going to trial. The new cliche "taxpayers money" will be used. I won't waste my time watching the netflix 10 episodes version. |
|
By:
If you go out and vandalise you're neighbours property to a serious extent you will definitely be looking at jail time or if you lucky compensation and community order.
This appears to be a bigger thing, personally I couldn't give a f about "the tree" but looks like it means a lot to many people. |
|
By:
well done howard. How could anyone with even an ounce of self esteem let it be known that they were "assaulted with Icing Sugar"!
Did it wash off o.k.? |
|
By:
assaulted with icing sugar and egg whites alledgedly ,don't think the judge will go souffle on them tbh.

means a lot to many people and Hadrians Wall / Northumberland tourism local pubs etc. This gets to the point. They knew this would upset hundreds possibly thousands of people. One tree but no others for miles in a unique setting. They don't care likely because they are sociopaths.
