Cheers all. Rattled the crossbar with that one.

As for the other pick Crocus Time, she didn't see the 7f out on this occasion and although only beaten 1.5 lengths, was only good enough for 5th place.

Thanks cobs and youresomean.

I think more chance of another second tbh, youresomean, with a record so far on the thread of 11 seconds and just one winner from 52 selections.

I'd like to think that I must be due another winner but that might be tempting fate.

Paradise Lost, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 2.30 Gowran Park (5 PLACES)

I'm going to chance a rare one over hurdles for this thread with Paradise Lost, who ran well to finish second of 17 at Tipperary (12.5f, soft) last May when he ran into a mare who had evidently thrived for a change of scenery as she would follow up off an 11lb higher mark in a Leopardstown handicap. Paradise Lost only ran three more times on the Flat last year, winning a 16-runner handicap at Roscommon (soft) in October.

He has yet to win in 8 attempts over hurdles but has made the frame on three occasions, and he didn't shape too badly on his return from a break at Punchestown last month when stepped up in trip to around 2m4f, keeping on into mid-division from off he pace having not been helped by a mistake three out. Hopefully he's sharper for that recent outing and he may have some untapped potential over this sort of trip.

Monks Dream, 1pt EW @ 13-2, 6.55 Newcastle

Monks Dream only managed four starts last year having belatedly reappeared in August, and he finished down the field in three of them, however, his run at Hamilton (5f, soft) in September suggested he still retained most or all of his ability, when I'm not sure he helped his cause by ending up on the far side but was only beaten 1.5L into fifth place in that 0-89 contest.

He won both his starts at Newcastle in 2023 in maiden / novice company as a juvenile over 6/5f, and he didn't shape too badly from his draw in one on his belated return here last month, with the run likely to have been needed back from another break. Hopefully he's sharper for that comeback and can race off a mark 7lb below his initial rating .

Cheers Virgin, another second for the thread.

Paradise Lost could only plug on into mid-div having been poorly positioned in rear based on how the race panned out with not much getting into it from behind, and his hurdling wasn't always fluent.

Eagle Day, 1pt EW @ 5-1, 4.25 Wolverhampton (3 PLACES)

Eagle Day has been the weaker in the betting of the two Dave Evans-trained runners in this, even though he finished ahead of his stablemate King's Code (who's a pound better off for 2.5L) when they finished second and fourth over C/D earlier this month. It looked a big effort from Eagle Day who used up plenty of gas from a tricky draw before kicking clear on the home bend and mainitaining his advantage until inside the final furlong, where he was run down by Smart Hero, who has always looked like he could be quite useful on the all-weather but hadn't always helped himself by being too keen, but on that occasion everything fell into place for him and he looked pretty good having been held up off a decent pace.

Eagle Day doesn't have Rossa Ryan on board this time, and the market may be more informative closer to off-time regarding the Evans' pair, but if Eagle Day can reproduce that latest form then hopefully he can at least make the frame, and a few firms are offering three places on this race.

Available Angel, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 7.30 Wolverhampton

I'm going to have a speculative pick on Available Angel, who probably ran better than her down-the-field finishing position suggested last time here over the 7f trip in a 0-50 classified stakes, when from the widest draw she took a keen hold and didn't have an easy trip in a race where the first three were waited with, but she ran okay in the circumstances to have disputed the lead until just inside the final furlong before gradually weakening.

The negatives aren't hard to find here as she hasn't won since August 2022, has to race from out of the handicap in this 0-55 contest, and she seems best over a mile at Yarmouth where her two career wins have been recorded, so this drop back to 6f is a big query, however, there have been other occasions this all-weather season when she hasn't run too badly having been on the pace without quite seeing her races out, so trying 6f again with a first-time visor applied looks worth a try.

The market had it right regarding the Evans pair, as King's Code only went down narrowly, whereas Eagle Day, who'd been keen enough on the sharp-end, didn't see his race out on this occasion.

I thought Available Angel was a bit shorter in the betting than I was anticipating this morning, particularly as Hugh Taylor had tipped the other outsider, but the market support for her came more pronounced closer to the off as she was only sent off at 7-1. Her each-way backers only just missed out, as she dropped to 4th in the dying strides after having been on a contested pace.

Twilight Romance, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 6.15 Southwell

Twilight Romance is returning from over seven months off, during which time he has undergone wind surgery, and reappears with a hood applied. He's of interest here based on his sole all-weather run to date which came over C/D last April when finishing second and faring best of those which forced the pace, being one of four to pull clear.

It's an obvious concern that the run may be needed, particularly with him reappearing when stable jockey Jason Hart is not eligible to ride at this rider restricted meeting, but a chance is taken at a double-figure price as he's unexposed on the surface and that course run suggested he can win races off his current mark.

Fistral Beach, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 6.45 Southwell

It looked a good effort from Fistral Beach here last month in a class 5 handicap over the 7f trip when racing from 3lb out of the handicap, to finish runner-up to one who was completing a hat-trick, particularly considering she helped force the pace on a day when coming from off the pace in the round course races was no bad thing.  She could only finish fifth of 9 on her latest start here over 7f but still shaped as though still in form having not had the clearest of runs up the stands-rail and probably could have done with a more even pace.

The selection has to prove her stamina for a mile but looks worth a try over it and drops into 0-50 classified company for the first time.

The market vibes were poor for Twilight Romance on his return from a break and he shaped as though he'd be sharper for the outing.

Fistral Beach tried to make most of the running on this step up to a mile, and although she was able to set some steady fractions, it was a night when getting some cover was probably a good thing, with the wind described as "moderate, half-across" and times on the slow side, and the selection faded to finish 4th.

Light Up Our Stars, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 7.30 Wolverhampton

I'm going to give another chance to Light Up Our Stars who has been a selection a couple of times since running well over C&D in December, notably when doing well to finish third from a wide draw behind a couple who would subsequently occupy the first two places in another C&D handicap. Of his three starts since, it would seem the 9.5f trip round here doesn't suit him, and although I was a bit disappointed with his effort when finishing 5th back over C&D in late-January, in retrospect it probably wasn't a bad effort considering the 4th and 6th have won subsequently. He didn't offer much on his latest start at Southwell.

The draw hasn't been kind again, but this is a slight drop in grade and he's 3lb lower than for that good effort in December. His yard has been in better form of late with a winner and three seconds in the past fortnight.

I backed this, for similar reasons, including stable hitting a bit of form, but with reservations about the draw. Anything I've backed there lately from stall 5 or above seems to double in price after a furlong and stay 5 wide. Finding it to be a massive draw bias track lately, maybe just coincidence with my picks, have you thought the same?

There doesn't seen anything wrong with the inside so the shortest route being the quickest show apply.
As for Light Up Our Stars, he doesn't seem to have much luck with draw, but last time here he quickly got across into a nice tracking position, which was why I was disappointed with his finishing effort, but the form did work out and as you say, his yard (acknowledging that they have two!) seem in better form now.

A good ride from Joey Haynes because I think he was looking to adopt his usual prominent tactics on the gelding but when he realized he was going to be caught at least 5-wide into the first turn, he took back, and LUOS at least finished his race off, even if he did find one too good.

Fast Flo, 1pt EW @ 15-2, 5.00 Newcastle

Fast Flo has been a selection on the threads a few times since running well at Lingfield (6f) in November, when at that point she hadn't had many realistic chances sprinting on the all-weather. She almost did the thread an almighty favour last time out at Southwell (6f) when 66-1 and not quite able to reach the winner Combustion, who has since gone on to complete a hat-trick in classified company.

Fast Flo is again of a little interest at the prices now trying 6f on a stiffer track considering that prior to this all-weather season she had largely been raced over further (has made the frame four times at 7f / 1m).  She's drawn the one stall and is again apprentice-ridden having seemed to benefit from stronger handling on that latest start, but to fair to Shane Wallace, he only just failed to win on the mare at Chelmsford (6f) last month.

Massimo Blue, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 8.00 Southwell

Massimo Blue has been weak in the betting this morning ahead of his handicap debut, but his initial mark of 72 is interesting because when he won a 6f maiden at Kempton on his latest start he beat a 78-rated rival who had the benefit of Warren Fentiman's 7lb claim, with a well-backed Karl Burke debutante nearly five lengths back in third. It has to be said that the 78-rated rival has yet to run in a handicap and the handicapper has been quick to drop his mark to 72, but Massimo Blue seemed to beat him with a bit in hand so even considering the assessor's revised rating of that horse, he could have allotted a higher mark to Massimo Blue, granted he might have taken previous form into consideration too.

Massimo Blue had finished 4th of 7 on previous start at Chelmsford (6f), but that form looks better now as filly who finished third (and subsequently allotted a mark of 68) has since won a fillies' restricted novice at Wolverhampton.

The selection has to prove that he can be as effective on Tapeta, but he doesn't look a bad sort physically so hopefully he has more to offer after just four starts, particularly if racing more economically as he has taken a keen hold in his races.

Alashos, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 8.00 Southwell

The other one who's of a little interest in this at the prices is Alashos, who ran well in nurseries  at York (6f, g-s) and Sandown (5f, g-f) in July off a higher mark. He wasn't then seen for 199 days before returning recently over C/D when he didn't shape too badly if the run was needed. He's now 4lb lower than for those two nursery runs which allows him into this 0-72, so hopefully he can take a step forward here with that pipe-opener behind him and cheekpieces applied for the first time.

And Fistral Beach, who was selected the last time she ran, won the first division, dealer.

I suppose the thing about Vixey this time, was that she was likely to get a stronger pace with Dash Power being in the field.

Oh well, catching them on the right days is what matters, and in the cases of Vixey and Fistral Beach, I failed dismally.
