Have downloaded Gruss on a new laptop but when I go to open it I get "The app isn't Microsoft verified" - I assumed there would be an "open anyway" option but there doesn't seem to be. Should point out I am a technological imbecile......

There is a security setting that only allows app installations from the Microsoft store. You need to unset it (and then remember not to download any other dodgy apps).

Go here and start reading at item 3:
https://www.makeuseof.com/app-isnt-microsoft-verified-warning-windows/

Alternatively, contact Gruss and ask them to make it available directly from the Microsoft store, although there might be cost implications here.

Alternatively, do a Google or Bing search on your error message.

Many thanks for your help, Ramruma, HOWEVER....having read it and watched several videos my advanced app settings (for some reason!) doesn't give me the "choose where you get your apps from" option! It's doing my head in....Laugh

What operating system does your new laptop have? Perhaps you bought a laptop that is in windows s mode. This prevents the downloading of apps from outside of the MS store ecosystem.

What does it say when you click on this link? https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/switching-out-of-s-mode-in-windows-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307#WindowsVersion=Windows_11

Click on that link then click on "switch out of s mode", then click 'open'. What does it say then?

Reading this jogged my memory of getting a new laptop a couple of years ago.
Was a pain getting out of that S mode. They don't want you to use anything but microsoft and edge, and you can't use chrome or any other browsers or apps until you fire it off.
In addition I turn almost everything off in settings as there's so much unwanted unnecessary bloatware on a new machine.
Good Luck gerard you'll sort it eventually.

Gruss only works on Windows.

I'm dreading the day my Windows 7 laptop gives up. Literally held together with duck tape now.

Why screaming?  I bought a factory refurbed Win 10 laptop last year to replace my old Win 7 machine - no problems at all.

For all the reasons outlined in this thread. Plus the lack of single-finger scrolling on W10/11.

Windows 7 is just so straightforward and user-friendly.

Anyway, the laptop is a Lenovo G770 which I bought thirteen years ago. The hard drive failed after three years, and I had a new hard drive fitted, and it's been fine ever since. I'm hoping that once you've replaced the cheap Chinese hard drive, the thing will be immortal.

That's only because he bought a laptop with a closed operating system. The s-mode. Just make sure you avoid that and you'll be fine.

Gruss is archaic, can't believe anyone uses that unless your're an excel monkey.

By the way, is there any way of knowing whether a laptop is not 's-mode' when you buy it?

I mean, do Argos specify something like 'This machine is not s-mode', or is it buried somewhere in the small print?

There are many tutorials on YT about disabling Window S

Currys you can see devices fitted with Windows S-mode using the filter.

Should say in the spec where is mentions the operating system. I used to be in the industry and it was always going to be for the lower end machines like Cloudbooks etc, but don't know if that has changed over time.

"Plus the lack of single-finger scrolling on W10/11"

What's that I'm missing?  Assuming you're not on a touch screen, I scrol W10 with a wheel on the mouse with a single finger - maybe you mean something else?

And W10 doesn't have all the stuff refered to in this thread, or at least it's not bitten me.

And Win 7 has been ages out of support - Win 10 has another 18 months or so to go at least, then I guess I'll have to look at 11.
