Used laptops and desktops for years now and until reading this thread had never heard of Windows S and had to look it up.
Windows 10 in S mode is a version of Windows 10 that's streamlined for security and performance, while providing a familiar Windows experience. To increase security, it allows only apps from Microsoft Store, and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing. How long has this been going on? |

Unless it's changed, you are able to choose to revert it to standard.

Thanks, jamee. I no longer use Chrome after experiencing their synching antics but maybe I'm getting too old for all this nonsense.

You can't do single-finger scrolling on the touchpad with Windows 10 or 11.
I never use a mouse, because that would mean sitting at a desk. I'm not doing that. It would feel like I'm employed in an office or something. The whole point of gambling is to avoid that fate. Slumped on a beanbag in front of the telly with a Windows 7 laptop and single-finger scrolling on the touchpad suits me fine. As for the security aspect, Windows still delivers security updates for Microsoft Security Essentials if you're on Windows 7. Here is today's: Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Version 1.411.12.0) - Current Channel (Broad) Installation date: 07/05/2024 18:04 Installation status: Successful Update type: Recommended Install this update to revise the files that are used to detect viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed. In addition, the operating system itself is never updated, so no new loopholes get created, as they are with Windows 10 and 11. So, I'm happy with the security aspect. |

No new loopholes get created, but no newly-discovered ones get patched, aiui.
And MSE is just a virus (etc) scanner - it doesn't stop bad actors exploiting any OS-level vulnerabilities. But whatever you're comfortable with, of course. |

Gruss now installed and working on the new laptop - I would describe the torture of having to reset my microsoft account to do it but I think I've embarrassed myself quite enough already. Many thanks to those who helped.

I've two laptops - one being used, the other ready to use - both with the same browser and bookmarks as I need to access an entity asap, if need to. But, it's a pain if using a different browser or OS.
Well done 'gerard'. I hope your new laptop gives you years of enjoyment and generates prosperity here. |

And just to add Windows 7 is the daddy of the new kid on the block named AI.
and we all know that you have to do what your daddy tells you to do. so it looks like Windows 7 will be about for a long long time. "now sit down and be quiet or i will switch you off" ![]() |

Windows 7 is magic and extremely useful. It does not carry excess unnecessary baggage. I'd (have 3 laptops/2 still useful with Windows 7 after repairs to the adaptor outlet/socket. Post Windows 7 the others were inadequate in comparison. Hence, the main reason I've switched to Chromebook.
