Nothing against the guy personally but im sick to death of him. Hes literally everywhere i look these days. The final straw was i was just looking at local small racecourse to me at fixtures and saw Big JD was booked for some event next month. I cant go on a racing site without seeing him. Hes basically a Favorite backer who like Harry Findlay just gets enthusiastic about a few horses and can sell it quite well to joe public. Whilst quite jovial his content imo is brutal. You are not a serious punter if you spend most of your week doing media as well across 2 countries. In this case you are a presenter.

A somewhat meteoric rise to the head table of the gravy train for Mr Dineen, seems to be employed as the Posts Shock Jock with wild statements on whether to lay or back one of the front 2 in the market, can't see the point of his column but good luck to him.

Clown, failed bookmaker - Why the Racing Post give him print on a Saturday, just tipping Mullins/Elliot odds on shots god only knows.  His latest gem is saying a horse has "a stone in hand " for a Cheltenham handicap??? It's CREBILLY -  can't jump, and won a 3 runner race at Exeter last time when the 2nd chucked it in.

Johnny Dineen replaced Gavin Lynch on the Racing Post's Upping the Ante videos after Lynch decided to try his hand as a commercial tipster. Viewers loved Dineen (even if I could not see it myself) and suddenly he has a Racing Post column and is a guest pundit on, well, everything and was in great demand on the Cheltenham preview circuit.

I don’t think it’s jealousy it’s totally OTT. I feel same with other sports too. Gary Neville etc… perhaps though its just what the masses want. Some sort of dumbed down easy listening. I used to like The Couch for this. He was pretty funny guy

Report differentdrum March 11, 2024 10:42 AM GMT
Not sure he tipped a single ante-post winner after taking over from Gavin Lynch. Fortunately, Jennings was just as bad.

Instead of being dumped on the basis of results, he has been signed up for everything based on comedic appeal rather than that of a tipster. His impact just confirms the sport is full of dullards who won't say anything that might rock the boat.

I did like it last year when JD was on a podcast for chelts and the Starsports rep gave two boosts and Johnny asked if he could avail after the show.
The rep kept going no have the bet now Johnny, how much?
"No that's okay I'll speak afterwards"
"Go ahead Johnny lemme know how much and I'll see if I can accommodate you"
"Okay can I have £30,000/16,000 singles on Mighty Potter and El Fabiolo"

The rep nearly puked, lol

Decent bets for a "failed bookmaker" imo

i dont think many in ireland would descibe mr dineen as a failed bookmaker. i think that the  landscape of the irish betting ring changed around the time of his retirement with the migration of punters  from on course to betting shops with their extra offers . many of the big irish oncourse layers either retired , died or went skint around then. a successful oncourse bookie is now one who has most of his turnover back on here to guarantee a profit. .even during his time  he was always more of a punter than a traditional layer.what impresses during his appearances is his knowledge of form without resorting to notes.i think his honesty is a breath of fresh air. one of lifes true gentlemen.

Johnny reckoned he won about a bag of crisps. Which in punters terms is done a few quid in. Stellar Story his biggest winner @ around 45.0 yet still ended up losing that day. Good job hes got the preview nights/upping the ante to the bills.
Report FOYLESWAR March 21, 2024 9:42 AM GMT
reckon where johnny went wrong and where  a lot of other punters go wrong me included ,is staking ,probable he had plenty on the shorties which is fine if they win ,but went smaller on the bigger priced pokes ie stellar story in the theory that 33/1 means its only got an outside chance and dosent justify a similar stake to a much shorter priced pick. after 50 years punting i still have not got the staking right ie to much on the losers not enough on the winners.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves March 21, 2024 10:04 AM GMT
It's one of the great anomalies: that many punters can work out a way of betting which delivers a long-term profit to level stakes, then they go and have a monkey on the odds-on shots, but only a score on the 33/1 winner which actually delivers that level stakes profit.

The usual argument is along the lines of "what's the point of backing even money shots if you're only going to have a score on them, eh?"

To which the reply is "now you're getting somewhere; think about it: what's the point of backing even money shots - that's the question you've finally stumbled on."

This year seems even worse. Try finding a preview without this guy? Unreal. I get why people like his humour and style but his knowledge and advice is really poor. He essentially presents in a joking way why to lump on a favourite at 4/7. God help you if thats the content you aspire to. In fact there is no pundit anywhere who is explaining how to find value and exactly when and why to oppose the hype to get long term success. Its just dumbed down content for the masses like everything else these days. There is such a huge space in the racing pundit mkt for better content.
Report paulo47 March 10, 2025 9:45 AM GMT
Listened for the first time , he was amusing and did say that Majborough was good value at 4/7 as he reckoned 4/11 (anywhere but Cheltenham ) but its all just bookies fodder . I cant talk as backed at 100 and laid at 20  Cromwell's  mare but only in buttons .
Report Whippin Piccadilly March 10, 2025 10:17 AM GMT
He's entertaining that's for sure. But I have to question some of his opinions. He thinks CH isn't as good as he was and they never come back. Er? He won a Christmas hurdle after a year off and only 80% fit and he could have won at Cheltenham by 20L+ LTO if allowed to. He's already back! Also says he won't lay CH but would have if Lossiemouth was still in the race? Er? She had zero chance of winning the Champion Hurdle. She couldn't even get near a ring rusty CH in Christmas Hurdle and she'd be coming into the race off the back of a heavy fall.
My opinion? The year off might have actually helped CH and I think he's better then he was (opinion based not figures) I think you'll see something very special at Cheltenham tomorrow
Report racing6699 March 10, 2025 10:54 AM GMT
Mullins just said on racinguk interview live that Lossiemouths work was not as good as State Man last week and they felt she would at best be playing for places in CH.
