The one thing that is not even being contemplated through all of this is the guy that can pass the affordability checks and have enough money but is still a problem gambler by way of compulsively investing all of his time gambling and sacrificing everything else including family time but as long as he has enough money to spend he'll be classed as OK.......don't ask them to work that one out

" 1%  of bookies customers provide 70% of bookies profits many of whom are problem gamblers "

the 1% she speaks of are problem gamblers, the bookies have targeted them for years not so they can refer them to gamcare but so they can clean them out.  these are the ones that should be AC'd and the bookies have a list of who they are.

so the other 99% can carry on as they are.

the scottish guy asks why rugby doesn't need betting money  support but racing does. The guy thats supposed to be on our side said he didn't know.  The obvious answer is team sports have partisan support with betting not needed.  Racing without betting is horses running around a field.

..... All depends on the definition of bookie customers.

Bit like targeting cyclists and including everyone who knows how to ride a bike.  Basically BS

I would have loved to have been in the room and asked the MPs there to put up their hands if they thought that share traders were gamblers. I would be willing to bet that none of them see anything wrong with investing £5000 in a company share even though, in theory, you could lose the lot.

My thoughts make the most of Chelters and racing generally this year you won't be able to bet above a tenner even on course next or anywhere that is if you can get on so what is the point going?

True but something even closer would be online purchase of lottery tickets. Is there a limit on how many you can buy ?

can lose the lot on the lottery, on a scratchcard, at the bingo.
without anyone asking how much you earn.

just read today 500,000 people aged 18-24 have been prescribed anti-depressants. I've a feeling betting not involved in many cases.

Apparently more people get into problem gambling from the Lottery than from racing. I doubt very much if they will limit on course betting and if you bet in cash, how can the checks work?

Cash will not be used on course.  Either for betting or buying food/drink.

cashless society with boffins running daily checks on what you've spent your money on.

get a call from them at 10pm if they see anything they don't like.

9 million people gambled in FTX losing £bns.  No checks whatsoever.

Most of them have gone home. Place is almost empty.
All this will make no difference. It will still go on.
Bookmakers are doing checks already.

It might make a difference, as it should be a no brainer.  Problem is, when supposedly smart people make stupid decisions, they don't want to admit their mistakes, and put all their effort in trying to justify the stupid decisions.

Perhaps the secret is for Betfair to introduce Betfair Tokens rather than cash?  That way users can bet as much as they like.

Just issue 10 million Betfair Tokens at an arbitrary £10 a token and voila, punters can bet £100m no questions asked.

Most enjoyable format:

1) Open your speech by advising that you are no expert on the subject - but are going to talk anyway.
2) Spend the next 10 minutes speaking - thereby absolutely confirming that you are no expert on the subject.
3) Throw in a few stats that have been totally made-up - but repeated so often that they are now accepted.

Top stuff - if you are an insomniac.

Conclusion - not one of them has a fking clue about the detail or the reality of the topic about which they will legislate.

Affordability checks should be only for people who gamble in online casinos. They are obviously not shrood like us horse race bettors.

The Management, the problem is none of them have the expertise to confirm whether the others know what they are talking about or not.

A fair point CB29 - their ignorance does appear to be universally shared amongst them all.

Still the key argument is not made. Responsible and strategic sports betting generally, and horseracing in particular, can have high turnover and therefore short term losses that far exceed the proposed triggers and yet be nowhere near impinging on the limits of affordability.

The key point is affordability checks make things worse for almost everyone....Bookmakers, punters, racing, the government.

But Hancock had at least done some homework (or had his ear bent in Newmarket) about algorithms which are specifically designed to prevent anyone winning in online casinos. But racing can give a profit for those willing to study it carefully IF they can get a bet on. I judge all betting outlets on the percentage overround which with the National Lottery is around 40%, bookmakers around 12% Roulette at 3% and Betfair exchange at 2% so I place 99% of my bets on the exchange.

2 very basic points beyond argument...

1. Gambling is inherently irresponsible.

2. Affordability checks make gambling less affordable.
By:

The Minister sat there and listened to all the arguments and at the end read out what is going to happen. So he didnt even take time to think about any of it. What a waste of time.

What will happen...

1. Punters will be worse off
2. Bookmakers will be worse off
3. Racing will be worse off
4. The government will be worse off
5. Suicides and depression will increase (imo and the only one I could countenance an argument against)
6. Illegal bookies will be better off

All the minster changed was you don't have to give your postcode, that's exactly what he thinks of punters Angry They already got our postcodes!!
