Can someone help me out here. This person has locked up £271,000 for maybe 9 months.

They could earn interest risk free at 5.00% of £10k during this time. Why are they doing this?

Maybe big Labour layers picking up the free money from their green if someone matches them. Around £1,000,000 matched sub 1.2 Labour. So if you layed £200,000, you might as well use your green on the Greens and lay 1000.0 if someone willing to match
Report Hayden • February 5, 2024 4:49 PM GMT
I've got £3.5k green on the Labour most seats market but did nick 67 ticks so no need to consider interest with that margin and low sum.

from the graphs i'm only seeing £12.40 matched at 1000

so it's £12k tied up not £271k

on a side note, Reform look a play at 100/1

they wont win ofcourse but they'll very likely go shorter considering how awful both lab & cons are.

£6200 layer £6.20 backer.

One thing i always thought you needed to do was half the risk on a horse to hit the correct figure.

If you look into the Flyers at Devils game in the NHL on Feb 18th there's £139 matched on money line but the figure matched is £68.92 , so it's already halved.

Have i always had it wrong by halving it for accuracy  Confused

1. the money was nothing like that sum as already stated in thread
2. the purpose is likely to hide money not win any money.

can only earn 1k on interest before tax liable
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • February 6, 2024 3:48 PM GMT
aye but then only liable if you make more than your 12500 allowance.

£18570 if no other taxable income.
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • February 6, 2024 4:39 PM GMT
You may also get up to £5,000 of interest and not have to pay tax on it. This is your starting rate for savings.

The more you earn from other income (for example your wages or pension), the less your starting rate for savings will be.
If your other income is £17,570 or more

You’re not eligible for the starting rate for savings if your other income is £17,570 or more.

i didnt realise you get 5000 interest tax free.

Layers want more added...
Report breadnbutter • February 6, 2024 4:50 PM GMT
OP assumes 265 layer is one individual and that is a single position, as already mentioned its green being turned into potential profit from other plays, either trading or position taking.

Pretty sure initially the greens of Eng and Wales were not in this market when it was first put up, same as the reform UK (?).
Report Cider • February 6, 2024 5:18 PM GMT
Savings interest is reported by all the institutions to HMRC. If you actually work like most of us, you don't actually pay the tax directly (if liable), the tax code is adjusted for the following year.

Anyone earning over £10K interest on cash has to file a self assessment.

There are, of course, multiple workarounds.
Report 1st time poster • February 6, 2024 5:40 PM GMT
sunak dropped the tax free interest to £1000 which as rates have risen is now sub £30,000 in savings

Breached the threshold for SA, if not doing them already.

Gilts, money market (s&s isa), cash isa, premium bonds the obvious ones.
Report Cider • February 6, 2024 6:03 PM GMT
For example, you can hold VG Sterling Short-Term Money Market Fund in a stocks and shares ISA. It effectively tracks sonia (base rate), yielding circa 5.2% less a small amount of fees. I like this one as the income is paid out monthly, but there are plenty of other MMFs to choose from.

prev post didnt format correctly for some reason.

the BF graph shows £12 traded at 1000/1 on Greens

which is 12k

as I said.

dunno where you get this 271k from or this £6200 layer £6.20 backer.

maybe you need to goto specsavers.
Report breadnbutter • February 7, 2024 7:43 AM GMT
12.4 traded = 6.2 matched= 6,200

The figure 263k  is what's available at max odds (999)

And for some reason OP thinks it's one punter, when it's most likely green from either laying Labour/Conservative.

Am more worried about who has the 273 at 2 in that market,(most seats greens of Eng and wales)...

REFORM UK the steamer here Shocked
Report Celtic warrior • February 7, 2024 7:59 AM GMT
Thanks all. Is this an example then of the betfair algorithm seeding the market for the greens based on corresponding equal but opposite lays for the other parties?

Apologies for my ignorance on this one. It started as a hypothetical question from me!
Report breadnbutter • February 7, 2024 8:14 AM GMT
Someone has requested that selection was added, as soon it appeared everyone already matched  in market would get green or red appearing on that selection.

So no need to seed imo, just ask what exactly it is you want to know?

BTW I am no expert, they will be along shortly...
Report longbridge • February 7, 2024 9:44 AM GMT
I doubt it's seeding Celtic.

More likely imo (as others have suggested) it's people using the "Cash Out" button to green up - that will place a tiny bet on the Greens at 1000 to ensure the outcome is flat green across all selections.
Report Celtic warrior • February 7, 2024 1:59 PM GMT
maybe the term that I am looking for is CROSS MATCHING?
Report longbridge • February 7, 2024 7:43 PM GMT
That could have a similar effect Celtic - if you want to lay party A and better value is available by backing parties B, C, D and E then that will happen behind the scenes and money will get matched at 1000 on party E for pennies.
