Somewhat surprised not to see "DOUBLE INDEMNITY" gracing this list. Held by many to be the greatest "Film Noir" of all time, your humble author included.
An unforgettable masterpiece. Excellent plot, superb dialogue, terrific performances from the cast. A film in which I learned that "murder can sometimes smell like honeysuckle". |

Never seen that one Alun. I shall put it on my list. Cheers

On the Waterfront, Raging Bull, Casablanca, The Third Man, Treasure of the Sierra Madre have all been deservedly mentioned.
But just how good was Henry Fonda in the Grapes of Wrath?. Night of the Demon is a flawed masterpiece of horror: It has an intriguing story and builds up the tension, but the actual demon doesn't look scary at all and you see it at the start anyhow (which is a bit pointless). But if that early sighting of the demon could be editing out, it would become a really scary film, with the hints to not to go into the woods (including the seance scene: "Its in the trees, its coming!") working on the imagination. |

Author's note The Grapes of Wrath
When preparing to write the novel, Steinbeck wrote: "I want to put a tag of shame on the greedy bastards who are responsible for this [the Great Depression and its effects]." He famously said, "I've done my damnedest to rip a reader's nerves to rags." This work won a large following among the working class due to Steinbeck's sympathy for the migrants and workers' movement, and his accessible prose style. I agree Fonda was magnificent in the role. |

lemon drop kid -- "No war films either, dad boot, run silent, run deep, sink the Bismarck etc..."
Angels One Five is probably the best British war film of the black and white era. Better than The Cruel Sea or The Battle of the River Plate imo. One often overlooked is Went the Day Well? about an English village taken over by Nazi paratroopers, but it is probably one for the film geeks rather than the general viewer. Went the day well? We died, and never knew. But well or ill, Freedom, we died for you. Away from the war, let me put in a word for Victim which starred Dirk Bogarde as a married barrister tracking down a blackmailer of gay men at a time when homosexuality was illegal. A number of actors and actresses turned down the film because they were afraid of the stigma. It is on Youtube. |

Not a 'top-ten' by any means, but The Rocking Horse Winner is entirely relevant to a betting forum!!
Take a look next time it is on. Great scenes at various racecourse in the 1950's..and a very odd ending. as well! |
|
By:
Brighton Rock had good racecourse scenes. Better than the phoney ones in Peaky Blinders. In fact this film was better than Peaky Blinders all round.

The Day the Earth Caught Fire...was on late yesterday afternoon on Talking Pictures.
Good tale, if a bit unlikely but unsettling all the same. But, a great example of huge overacting by the male lead (character name Peter Stenning)! Why the character was played like that is beyond me but after about 30 minutes you want to tell him to shut the f**k up for five minutes at least! |

Although the Diary of Anne Frank has only been mentioned by myself the acting was superb and the film was nominated for seven Oscars, winning three. Some question Raging Bull, mistakenly thinking it was a boxing film and although plenty boxing scenes it was mainly focused on the downhill of La Motta and his insatiable jealousy.
