I remember Greville for Merchant Adventurer and London Gazette ( the latter he rode over hurdles ). |

Got him to sign my racecard as he left the jockey's room to ride Michael Stoute's soft ground loving Vaigly Great in the 1978 Vernon's ( in the days when it was staged in the first weekend in November). The colt had won the Ayr Gold Cup on the snaff two outings previous. He finished third in the Haydock race behind the Ryan Jarvis trained 20/1 poke Absalom, and hot favourite Sanedtki, a mare who had won the Foret and was with Olivier Douieb. Double Form and Boldboy were amongst the also rans.

Well you left the best bit out liebe as I didn’t remember 78 but remembered 79 I thought I would do some research on this race and as you rightly say it was in early November in 78 for the last time ,however the bit you left out was in those days it was run on the round course.
Looking at double form in 79 the 3rd was a very popular horse Devon ditty. |

My memory is normally reasonably sharp but had no recollection of the race being run on the round course -however, have just checked the Timeform Annual for that year and indeed they only had a straight five at the time. In the course description they state that six furlong races are run on a taginential extension. That's a new word I've learnt this morning!

Was there when Orojoya won - though haven't been to a running since the day Goodricke won. Was lucky enough to be present when Dayjur beat Royal Academy. Later on the card a young Dettori was unseated after the post on a Sheikh Mohammed/ Cumani animal

Favourite race Star Appeal's 1975 Arc , was there and all you could hear was ' Allez France ' , Dahlia in the field too and all silenced by a wonderful ride by Greville . And no I wasnt on at 118s .

- who (somewhat surprisingly, to both the racing establishment and the media) was entrusted with many big-race rides for Harwood, when Starkey had a long-term injury. A 'Tony' Clark Won the Benson & Hedge/Juddmonte International on Ile de Chypre. |

My first thoughts when seeing the name Greville Starkey is the " V " sign to Pat Eddery after the winning post.
Pretty sure it was on one of the 3 battles they had riding To-Agori-Mou vs Kings Lake. |

They also met at deauville Hayden so 4 times ,tou agori mou finished in front in France can’t remember the name of the winner

Extended coverage of the 1981 Sussex beginning with the runners leaving the paddock. Majority of us were no doubt on the razzle that day, watching the racing in the pub. The BBC coverage is exemplary - could almost cry how downhill terrestial coverage has gone. Interesting to hear Jimmy Lindley allude to To Agori Mou's common head - something we don't see anymore in the flat breed. |

think STARKEY,s name is back in headlines /vogue due to a lot of punters .no racing people listening to the RUK Michael stoute interview ,where he said Starkey was best judge of horse flesh stoute has ever seen and stoute moved heaven and earth to get him in the yard when he retired
