Well done Irqernpoker, good luck in the next round.
I was affected by the non runer but have to sat that I agree with jumnast. |
|
By:
Not disputing that jim
But UD was looking for opinions and ideas Getting the fave would likely reduce the chance of bonus points so not giving the NR situation a huge advantage At least you get a run rather than a 1/2 point gimme They don't always win ![]() |

Can I just say the suggestion theres an advantage to picking first is poppycock. Yes someone can pick the forecast favourite for every race on Thursday if they so wish but they still have to win, and thats are more than likely giving an opportunity to opponents to pick all second favs with just as much chance of them winning (and more than likely getting better bonus points). And, of course, by the time Saturday comes the market can change considerably. The races UD picks could next weekend throw up all winners outside the market leaders. FFS if people want to pick all the favs on thursday then I say let them they'll come unstuck!!

WP DeSSie, Good luck in the next round.
Thanks for organising UD. |
|
By:
I think there is a slight advantage to picking first as I would have picked Auguste and Dark Trooper if DeSSie hadn't beaten me to it and then I would have won, but..part of the skill is to get in early so he deserved to win.
I think winners should maybe score 6 or 7 points to have a slightly bigger differential between winners and placed horses but it's a minor point really. |

Back at you Cobs, a good battle!

Picking first or second is of little importance relative to helpful suggestions about the nuisance of late non-runners
|
|
By:
acey & tobymug both non starters? same thing innit?
|
|
By:
Agreed. But that problem isn't an easy one to solve so people make other suggestions that divert from the main issue!!

great comp UD thanks ever so for organising.
My view is that the aerly picks has no advantage. in terms of nons i think the selection should go to fav as is normal in most racing arrangments, if thats gone go to second fav etc. in terms of points I think the current system works fine |
|
By:
Undecided, many thanks for your efforts in the opening round.
I agree with those that think picking first doesn't gives an advantage, at least not significant, although this could be considered a biased opinion in my case considering i did, but there were valid reasons for me posting early and i had a NR that i wasn't aware of until after the deadline. Well done all winners, but at the end of the day, it's only a fun competition. Good luck in the next round all. |

Rico
Is that 10/1 available to the winner after they have won the comp or is the price built in to winning the comp as well ? |

Thanks UD for all your hard work. Thanks airto - more luck than judgement

Still think giving players another horse if theirs doesnt run is wrong.
Either give them 2pts token gesture or leave them with 0. At the end of the day it's their responsibility to make sure they have a named runner. If they're not around to see their selection is withdrawn before cut-off time its their fault and they probably shouldn't have entered the competition. If they are around but not paying enough attention to notice it is also their fault. However:- 2pts seems a fair buffer against your horse being withdrawn AFTER the selection cut-off time, 0pts if it's withdrawn BEFORE the first race? |

But, at the end of the day, it is all meaningless fun, wonderfully well organised by the amazing ud, and that is what we should all remember.
Thank you undecided. |

Good morning. I'm on my hols and had no internet access yesterday so missed all the fun.
Thanks for your good wishes unlucky stu ( I'm sure at least 50% of the time it would be a different result.) There seems rather a lot of " how many angels can dance on the head of a pin " going on. The rules will NEVER suit everybody and I certainly can't see any major flaws. |

Rico it was actually quite an exciting afternoon and got some adrenalin flowing (in my case) and probably for a few others so I don't think it was "meaningless" for the aged ones amongst us. You should enter the next one.

I can't believe how quickly UD provided the updated scores - well done UD in every respect.
I hated the format (scoring system), agree with kenbo - always like to see some reward for thinking outside of the box or big prices - but the optimum strategy (of this format) was to stick to the top end of the market. It is what it is, we all knew the format before we entered and could adapt our picks accordingly. Same applies to first pick - everybody had the chance to be first picker. I enjoyed it, so many thanks again to UD. P.S. Still no fkin BF socks UD ![]() |

By:
Yes, it's a fun competition, everyone knew the rules at the start, and Undecided continues to do a great job. That's just stating the obvious.
It's equally obvious that it is an advantage to go first. I gave the results earlier (a fact rather than an opinion) and if you posted first you were 20% more likely to progress to the next round. 20% is a large difference. It might not repeat, but that's what happened. It is also a simple fact that if were picking second you had one less horse to pick from, and that runner was very likely to be fancied runner. Yes, they don't all win, but you would want to consider it. You wouldn't bet in a race where you couldn't consider the whole field. It may be that nothing can realistically be done about it, but reading some of the stuff on here you would think people for some reason want to close down even talking about fairness. I am not sure what that sort of thinking achieves. |
|
By:
dd - if you think picking first is the optimum strategy (and tbf for the format it probably is slightly), just pick first. I might look at Saturdays racing on a Thursday and make a few notes for myself but i wouldn't want to pick any firm selections for Saturday on the preceding Thursday. Posting on Thursday would be a distinct disadvantage to me and the way I look at races but if I wanted to do it, I could have done.

Thanks for all the input, just shows at the end of the day someone has to make a decision on rules and some will like some won't.
Regarding the points format as against using SP - I am of the opinion that these are AvB matches and it lends itself to a simplified system. I'm not asking for clever outsider finding to top a league of opponents, just find one to beat your single opponent. However, not to disregard the value of the bigger SP, I have the bonus pts, albeit I think I set it too low, perhaps 1 pt for 5/1, 2pts for 8/1 or so. Non-runners, both the 2pts for any non-runner, and replacing with Fav are valid options. The fav one is slightly more messy, as due to the non duplicates rule, this could vary between matches. I think I will try 2pts for non-runner, providing it became a non-runner after the cut-off. Again, appreciate the involvement and positive comments, has helped liven up this forum a bit ![]() |
