Cropsick -- "we had fck all expected fck all and wer happier for it."
What's that to do with Kes though? The boy has fck all and expects fck all but is *not* happy. The story is the kid trying to escape his destiny, or fate might be a better word, but this is British not American so he can't. Can you tell I've forgotten the kid's name? One of the recent child battering cases in the last year or two had a six-year-old lamenting "no-one loves me" shortly before his parents killed him. Sorry to bring the mood down but that is the other half of Kes: he's not getting any support at home either. The only person who might be on his side for one brief moment is the English teacher. And that's the point. His family fails him; his school fails him; he is doomed to go down the pit. And so are all his mates and all the other kids up and down the country. It's one long conveyor belt from birth to grave via back-breaking drudgery with no hope of escape. |
