A firewall *ought* to help, as some of the exploits involve making (eg) RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) requests and a firewall should lock down the ports and protocols used for such unless you explicitly open them up.

If you only use your computer for online stuff, you're as well off with Linux.
I put Ubuntu on a laptop which I use exclusively for banking. No updates all the time either. It's secure and free. |

You might think twice before putting Ubuntu on a computer used for general use.
Like with TV tuners, WhatsApp, email and other stuff. It's not friendly at all. |

Linux is much less targeted (though not un-targeted - used by lots of big companies for their servers so it is a target for some).
But you really ought to be installing the Ubuntu security updates - just because your install doesn't nag you / do it automatically like Windows doesn't mean it doesn't need doing. If you want to go really stripped-down just for Betfair, maybe a Chromebook? |

I do install the updates.
They're just far fewer than with Windows. |

Does Avast and Advanced System Care etc give much protection against hackers? They all seem to talk about firewalls and malware protection. ------------------ NO need whatsoever for ANY ADDITIONAL 'Protection' Security Service - If, as the vast majority are - you are using a WINDOWS Operating System as - WINDOWS has it's own BUILT-IN Security called - 'Micro sift Security Essentials' .... and it is both the most compatible, and the Best..... complete WITH a Built-In FIREWALL. Just as importantly - and this is an extremely important point - If you do decide to Download Avast - Avanti - (dinosaur) Norton (renowned for SLOWING down your Computer) - and the like - Then ... You Need/will Have to DISABLE the AUTOMATICALLY already Installed Microsoft Security Essentials - as there will NOW be 2 Security Services Installed on your computer - which will CONFLICT with each other (by each CONTINUALLY checking the other out, thinking it may be a Rogue element) - and that Checking out really DOES S L O W your computer down. You may believe all the waffle that the other companies say that their Security does - or, worse still, 'a mate'- may have told you 'what he has heard' etc - and wish to believe the Sales Pitches ... When Microsoft Essentials does all that they claim, anyway - But without Shouting about it. Still you may choose to proceed with an outside Security source - and even take the advice to DISABLE Microsoft Security Essentials - BUT ... You will then LOSE ALL the extra Built-In benefits of Microsoft Essentials ... So - What is the point? There isn't one. |

edge for me on horse racing on here is diabolical and getting worse, just keeps sticking etc, takes me around 25 secs to place a bet
|

Stopped using edge some time ago and went back to Chrome.

I've tried edge and chrome and horseracing is slowing up in the last 10 minutes with the last minute or so like treacle. How can a browser only choose to slow betfair in the last 10 minutes before the off?!
