I saw Broad turn around sarcastically once to ask Carey if he could leave his crease, what he should have done is turn around and ask EVERY single time the ball went through to Carey just to emphasize where we're now at, and of course it will also emphasize why we don't do this.
Incidentally, who reckons Carey would like to have that ball back in his gloves, I think he probably does. Him coming out to back in the next test with Bairstow stood behind the wickets will now become the most anticipated sporting moment of the year and just to rub Carey's nose in it I expect Bairstow to make a point of not attempting the same thing. |

Just a few observations - - I don't see how something that is expressly provided for in the laws of the game can be considered "unsporting". You must continually find yourself calling for bowlers to stump the non striker for wandering down the wicket, it's expressly provided for in the laws of the game and therefore can't be considered as unsporting....yes? |

The over-riding problem we've got here is that Cricket is a game that has an accepted sportmanship tag attached to it which other sports don't have, so when something happens contrary to that spirit we get all this furore.
I think that the bowler stumping the non striker for wandering too far down the wicket is a similar situation to what happened yesterday but I think that the people who don't have a problem with what happened yesterday would have a problem if a bowler did stump the non striker. It's a very grey messy business, you have to have a no hold barred approach where anything goes, it doesn't work when you have a bit of both going on as yesterday proves. |

The bowler would normally warn the batsman that he was wandering out of his crease before then attempting to run him out further down the line.

What would have happened if Carey's throw had hit the stumps, but Bairstow had not left his ground, and ball then rebounded away after hitting stumps and Stokes ran for a bye ?
Would ball have been live then ? Pretty sure Bairstow would have run. |

Farcical scenario but it's always what puts bums on seats and all the public want to talk about , i bet Stokes wonders if he ever actually bagged a century yesterday , without the so called controversy this thread would have ended after a few posts which is what happens when formats struggling to maintain a certain standing need controversy to keep the public / media interested.
I just pray that all this gentleman garbage becomes as outdated as it should be and cricket can play the way of other professional sports , playing within the rules to win is just being professional. No bias view here as i also believe Broad shouldn't have walked that day either , also the running out by the bowler when backing up should be an integral part of the game as in Baseball , it's a legitimate action to deter cheating. Cricket is a strange sport with its nuanced rules.
You have to ask the umpire before putting cream on your hands (which he will deny) yet Ricky the rat ponting used to spit on his hands before every delivery. Disgusting creature. And the rule about 5 runs (is it?) if the ball hits a helmet on the floor….wtf is that about? |

Duffy, re your question to me, yes it's perfectly legitimate for the bowler to run out the non-striker in that scenario. The non-striker is clearly trying to steal an advantage by being out of their ground early. Again, the laws specifically allow for it. It's certainly not unsporting.

Must say Stokes and McCullum have played their cards cleverly here , Stokes stating he would have retracted the appeal and McCullum flags up the " regretful " 2006 incident before he's jumped on , of course we believe them because it keeps the controversy boiling which suits the media just fine.
As for Sunak offering an opinion on the matter , you'd expect a game of Cricket be the very least of his concerns at the moment. |
