Sample the treats on the Wollies 'pick 'n' mix counter before the elderly security guard shooed you out of the door with your gob stuffed with fruit salads and blackjacks.

Go with my mate to the Co-op to buy Lux soap flakes so the district nurse could give his dad an enema.

These days the enema would come in a sterile package, and everyone would be put on a register for even mentioning downstairs body parts to young kids, and possibly fined for sending youngsters on any sort of errand unaccompanied and, even worse, ON FOOT.

Collecting beer mats.
Collecting soccer stars stickers and putting them in the album, but having absolutely no interest in the "international soccer stars" which came next.
Collecting discarded (or your own losing) racecourse bookies' cardboard tickets.
Putting apostrophes in the correct place, unless you are one of those sad ****s who still do.

Fried bread from the bacon fat with Sunday breakfast.

Get free greens stuffed into your bag by the Greengrocer.

Add £'s Shillings and pence in their heads while pouring drinks behind the bar.

Sunday morning papers hoping for photos of Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice Davis.

Watching closely as your pint was poured to make sure the Landlord wasn't topping it up with dregs

from the drip tray.

Underage drinking in pubs dressed in suit and tie and behaving in an adult manner so you weren't

refused service. Me and 3 mates were in the local one day when a Bobby stuck his head round the door

and spotted us. He walked over to our table, didn't say a word, just looked us up and down turned

around and walked out. We got the message.

There was a pub in Penge not far from the Police Station that was so full of underage drinkers that

the Landlord would cry 'Time boys and girls please'. At chucking out time there would often be a

motorcycle cop keeping an eye on everyone. They knew how to Police in those days.

Doing a paper round to pay for your first bike.

Seeing who could shoot pee the highest up the school toilet wall.

One hour lunches in the pub then go into Lincoln's Inn Fields to watch the girls play netball or

listening to Henry the Socialist speaking on his soap box on the corner.

Ah yes. To quote Dickens, 'They were the best of times, they were the worst of times'.
