You submit AFCs. This has been the MO for sometime (letter in todays RP). The books are never going to offer the option of if you are not prepared to submit them then you can close your account and withdraw you deposits immediately. Why is this? Everyone out there must be ware that if they win they may be faced with this problem. Not great for the future of punting/racing. Once you dont have trust in your bookmaker all is lost.
This topic has been done to death. Books can hold funds pending source of funds enquiries, they have no right to hold them pending affordability checks and would lose everytime a small claims action was taken out against them.

Sparrow-I use my account on here most of the time however I had to submit AFCs before I could withdraw £600 winnings. BF closed that account and I had to open an account in my wifes name (Dont tell em though). Could not find out why they did that as I had had an account for years showing probably a small profit maybe £100 a year no more although they closed mi Sprotsbook account in no time. Laundering money certainly not I punt in £50-£80 once or twice a week. Go figure.

I deal a lot in cash, hence my monthly income into my bank account would look as though I couldn't be affording to bet much. I bet cash in shops mostly. Am I to understand that they could withhold winnings by retrospectively saying I shouldn't have placed those bets? Surely they'd have to pay up and just ban me from future betting?

Who judges whether you can afford to bet? As Regbutler says, they should pay up and then close the account. If they say you cant afford to bet then I would claim all my losses back for years. My income has not changed since I became a pensioner.I suppose a pensioner is not earning enough to bet. No bookmaker has ever worried how much I earn before and Ive been betting for nearly 70 years. Its time it was all sorted.

Like Dave says it's been done to death. I don't get why punters don't just send the info, unless you've not got a bank account and only deal in cash then they can find anything out about you anyway but for obvious reasons they won't admit they do, as to come from the individual.

It's a privacy issue of course - no organisation should be able to demand to see everything you spend money on, and how you operate your own personal accounts.
Pay slip, maybe fair enough, but bank statements showing every little aspect of your life - not a chance that should be allowed.
Amazing in this day where we get trained in GDPR and related privacy laws rammed down our throats.

No way will I ever send them my bank details. As I said above. Im a pensioner and my bank accounts do not show my true wealth. Im certainly not telling them about any savings ive got.

Following up from my earlier post... I had 2 nice pickups in December, same day, different bookies 7k and 13k On both occasions I got paid part cash, rest onto card within half hour of the last horse winning(had an acca up) No source of funds or affordability checks
So, it's not like it's being applied universally
Apologies for the aftertiming

I think if this persists as a problem there should be a big GDPR movement against it personally, even if it has to be initiated by some kind of punters class action or similar.

This is a line, easy to find on the government page for GDPR if organisations use or request information:
They must make sure the information is:
used in a way that is adequate, relevant and limited to only what is necessary
That last part is the key issue.

Can't see any rationale to justify needing to know what takeaways I buy a curry from etc, on my bank statement.

I would like to know if any punter has taken a bookmaker to the small claims court to retrieve their money. Its the first thing I would do. Cant see how they would have a leg to stand on.

Yeah that shows exactly how farcical it all is. Do punters in betting shops ever get asked for details. If I was asked i'd ask the idiot how much he earned a week. Then I'd tell him to f off

Some think this has been done to death. They probably think if it happens to them they will just go down the small claims route. Yes they will get their winnings in a months time or so after jumping through the hoops and paperwork. Bully for them. This issue needs to be raised again and again hoping the wider media see the injustice of it all. Im sure this forum is viewed by those who have influence. Keep it up. Hopefully the HRF can help. I just want to pursue my hobby without the grief.

Dont see anyone in authority standing up for the punter. The Racing Post dont want to upset the bookmakers and the so called experts on the TV are probably being looked after by bookmakers, so they wont say anything. If I getting money witheld i'll certainly go down the small claims route.

1) Never refer to yourself as a "punter" - it has all sorts of negative connotations - you are a customer 2) Don't get mad, get even! 3) With regards to No2 ^ send a well worded e-mail, copy it to the GC, your local MP, as many other MP's as you can identify, your local council, your local police commissioner, the mayor if you have one, the local planning committee, AA, DFS, the RAC, BT, EE and Elton John (you get the picture). 4) Google DSAR (Data Subject Access Request) and hit them with a very specific and detailed one.
They will wish they had never fooked with you - and you will get your money quicker than you can say welching scum.
MythWA - my two cents for what it's worth:1) Never refer to yourself as a "punter" - it has all sorts of negative connotations - you are a customer2) Don't get mad, get even!3) With regards to No2 ^ send a well worded e-mail, copy it to the GC, your
They do still exist geoff and they are currently conducting a survey - but the fact that you had to ask, unfortunately, speaks volumes about their profile and their impact (not necessarily their fault) - but it's got to the stage where somebody with a bit of clout and influence needs to get involved imo.

Probably better to cc The Sun, The Express, The Daily Mail, BBC Watchdog, The One Show, Rip Off Britain and Panorama, etc. The reality is that none of the people I have suggested would actually understand or be interested - but it would get you what you want very quickly.

TM I think you have over estimated my desire for justice. Im really not interested in taking this any further than discussing with fellow punters on here. No activist me.

That's your prerogative MythWA and I understand that sentiment - but that is also why they do it, they know that they can get away with it. I don't think it would take many activists (or DSAR's) to put a stop to it!
