I know, no techy genius  here but can hardly get a reception on my mobile. I spoke to the BT mobile department and the man told me not to quote him. Long story short it appears my phone is 2G and he recommended upgrading to a 4G. Not a pro0blem with the cheapest I can find in Argos at £60 but any techy experts able to say this will improve my reception? (I'm only 1 mile away from the mast I may add) As it stands I'm paying BT x amount per month for texting and they did send me a new sim card which made no difference.

Helpful replies welcome.

stewy you can get a brand new phone under a contract from as little as £19 a mth wiv sky - Apple phones from £21 shirley its a no brainer

How's it going Paul? Why would I pay £21 a month when BT only charge me £5.70p for unlimited calls and texts? I don't use data and just want a clear reception. Perhaps the G I mention (2 in my case) is confusing but if one goes into the Argos site they are still selling plenty 2g  sim free phones for sale hence my decision to buy a 4G. I then put my old sim card in and should be good to go.

OK, I will bite, since noone has answered the OP's question, the short answer is No, the 2G signal is much stronger and  robust than 3G.

Longer answer is it appears you have two phones, your first one tesco is locked to the 02 network,(not the provider) so you could get a sim only on 02 if you can remember that far back and how was signal?

Your bt mobile phone of unknown make is on EE and if in settings your preferred signal is on auto it may be constantly looking for a 3G signal,it may be trying to give you the dreaded EE  2.5G, edge, which I have seen on many low price piggybackers given by EE, its not very good.

You say your wife, uses 3G, what network is that and is signal OK?

Finally,if you want to remain in control, ie know your texts are being sent as a MSM via GSM network  and not via an app  you never knew you had and you want your calls to be a call over the GSM network not via the tinternet , stick to 2G it will be around for a long time yet. Its a far better signal than 3G, in your case select 2G only on your bean tin manually and you should be good to go.

Finally, just seen a message from 02 informing of the annual crawler  increase of 3.49% + cpi increase of 10.4 % = near 14% , thar aving a laugh.

The part I have highlighted is true as far as I can remember. miss stew has a alcatel pop smartphone which is 3g. She is on the same network as myself and has no problems and the only other thing I can add is that she does use the odd data. The Bt guy told me if I got a 4g phone he would speak me through it as how to connect to the internet which he says would give me a better signal. I should add my new phone wont be a smartphone as it's too fiddly for me.

Stewart, assuming this is not a wind-up, you only need 1 sim card (it will probably be valid for 2g, 3g and 4g)

As for dual-sim phones, trust me, not illegal in any way and nothing to be concerned with. I have 2 separate sim-cards, one German, one Swedish and i imagine several on here will have two UK numbers for whatever reason. It's basically the same as 2 phones.

Thanks for the replies Andrew and steve. I'll look into that and question BT. The last time I did they told me no landline no home broadband.

I can only ask but some OAP's like miss stew's mother who actually phoned me today to speak to miss stew regarding her husband who is in a care

home with dementia is not savvy unless it's landline. Had she not got in touch she may have panicked and for the sake of 20 notes at the time being I'll pay it but as everyone knows, life can change at anytime.

** as for this new phone that miss stew treated me to it still has problems. IE. I have to unlock it before calling or texting and if I receive a text I can't use that to reply. I have to go back to the screen and unlock it before replying. Also I can't adjust the volume. I have a pal who is visiting me shortly and he's fairly up to speed so hopefully he can lend a hand.

That aside there's little you can't google nowadays but this bu gger is worse than my previous Nokia 301 apart from I get an excellent reception whilst speaking to someone.

Some may class this as a dumb phone but at present it's got me baffled but at the end of the day switching to a 4g has made a helluva difference reception wise.

Has been a long Stewarts enquiry about this one...

Everyone is diff its likely unecessary but...

Move with the times, if you dont want to thats ok.

Fastest BT broadband, NO LANDLINE, all the SkySports/BT Sport channels, all the freview, basically every channel bar PP View, 60 odd quid a month

Add to it a bog standard brand new but not latest edition Iphone, pish easy to use, be used to it in a week...20 odd quid a month (4G) phone will be "free" ofc it isnt but you get the point...

Might even be lucky enough to download a banking app to stew poor Miss Stew treking to Barclays to see the crack.

For 80 quid a month can basically have a top set up...alternatively buy a terrible phone for 100 odd bob and pay 5/10 quid a month and live like a neanderthal. Plus youll need broadband anyway Laugh.

Gl regardless.
