Thanks.
Bit of a shambles tbh, because the stablemate who won the opener at 20-1 was a selection on the thread the last time she ran. She was down in grade and trip today, which both looked pluses, and I did pick her for today's Dundalk competition, but let the draw put me off for this. Oh well, such is life... The other pick for today, Mostallim, weak in the betting and a quick turnaround after last week's run which came off a break, so not brimming with confidence tbh. |

GEORGE.B 20 Jan 23 19:27 Dun Na Sead, who was absolutely friendless in the betting, was another with her stamina to prove, she led them into final furlong but was a sitting duck and soon capitulated. She's eligible for weaker races and 5f may suit better, so there may be a race in her round Dundalk at some point. Won't be getting to the 100 pt target letting 20-1 winners slip through my fingers. What a dipstick. |

GC, good run from Sid's Annie, seemed to stay the trip and probably not helped by being on the far side up the straight.
Thanks again guys. Unfortunately normal service resumed with Mostallim, who was weak in the betting, and he too was on the far side up the straight, which hasn't looked the place to be of late there. Running P/L: +25.2 pts 60 days remaining |

Direct Hit, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 5.30 Newcastle (3 PLACES)
A few firms are offering three places on this 7-runner 3YO handicap and I'm going to take a chance on Direct Hit, who I thought might have shaped a little better than the bare result based on how the race panned out on his penultimate start when finishing fifth of 12 over a mile at Southwell. He ran a similar race to a horse called Man Made Of Smoke, who admittedly is still a maiden but has been running okay at his level, and the runner-up from the race has won since. Direct Hit ran poorly on his latest start over that same C/D when he might have had an excuse having pulled hard from a double-figure draw and been caught a little wide. He's 3lb lower today than for that penultimate run, and hopefully he settles better on this return from a seven week break. |

Going for shorties now then George
I am gutted to see that Floating Spirit is so short but I have taken 1.6. The opposition looks weak and a 7lb penalty should not stop her but poor value really. Still 12lb in hand on RPR of those with form so only the newcomers to worry about. |

Well done with the Balding winner, sageform. As for the selection, he did trade odds-on for a little money after it had looked as though the fav was going to cruise past them all and win easily, but he couldn't quite get back on terms with the fav. Probably a blank day for the thread tomorrow unless I'm tempted in by something over jumps or at Meydan. Running P/L: +25.8 pts |

The Southwell novice race that I referred to the other day which didn't look the strongest of contests at the time, but the form was franked at Chelmsford with the winner Thismydream off his revised mark going close against Oisin's comeback winner, and the 4th from the Southwell race Dalby Forest overcoming adverse circumstances to win the opener on the card.
The third Show Compassion makes her handicap debut in the next off a mark of 62, but easy to back at around 25 on here. |

Otto Oyl, 1pt win @ 7-2, 7.00 Newcastle
The booking of Oisin Murphy hasn't helped Otto Oyl's price, but he has drifted back out a little in the betting this morning. His AW mark has dropped 16lb having offered little in his first five starts for Archie Watson, but there were more encouraging signs on his latest start when returning from over two months off in a 8.5f, 0-60 amateur riders' handicap at Wolverhampton, where he endured quite a tough trip from his wide draw but only weakened out of the places inside the final furlong. He finished behind Laoch Gach La (who may appreciate the return to Newcastle) but reopposes on 5lb better terms. This three-time winner at a mile for the Barron yard (including on Tapeta at Southwell) now drops into a 0-50 classified and is one of three in this with the ceiling rating, so while it has to be hoped this doesn't come too soon on the back of what looked a hard enough race just nine days ago, it will be disappointing if he can't get competitive in this basement grade. Littlemissattitude, 1pt EW @ 50-1, 8.00 Newcastle I'm going to have another speculative pick on Littlemissattitude, who I thought ran better than the bare result in a 6f, 0-57 handicap at Chelmsford last September. I selected her once or twice on my last thread when she offered little, but there have been a couple of runs since over 5f at Southwell and on her latest start at Newcastle, where she hasn't looked an entirely lost cause while shaping as though a return to 6f will suit. She was racing from out of the handicap on that latest run in a 0-62 handicap, so while she doesn't face an easy task on adjusted figures in this 0-50 classified, it probably does represent a more realistic task, and she many benefit from having a fully-fledged jockey back on board for the first time in a while. |
|
By:
Clarification: Otto Oyl's mark went up to 66 for a couple of wins on turf last year, but was only on 56 following his Southwell win before then, so while he might be better on turf, from an AW handicapping perspective he should still be be competitive in classified company if that latest start signals a return to form.

Not one of my better days with a couple of poor ones.
Otto Oyl probably ran better than it appeared nine days ago at Wolverhampton off a two month break, but he also might have had a hard race too, and returned to the track relatively quickly, he folded tamely this evening. Not sure after tonight's showing, but he hasn't had loads of racing and might be one to keep an eye on once they've had the chance to refill the tank. My longshot pick, Littlemissattitude, who was sweaty and raced with her tongue lolling out, lived up to market expectations. Running P/L: +22.8 pts |

George,Just a thought, have you ever considered putting in a lay at about 5/1-7/1 (adjustable on whatever price you take) seeing as a lot of your horses are huge prices and a good few of them run really well until the final furlong, might save you a few quid in the long run?
. Like I say it's a shame to see a 25/1 shot still in the firing line at the furlong pole and you do your dough if it doesn't win. |
|
By:
It's a very sensible suggestion, punchestown, and I may consider doing that for next thread, but we'll keep things the way they are for this thread. I don't want to be seen to be moving the goal posts!
I've just noticed that there is a 5 day break for the Flat in March, so the 100 days has pretty much become 95 minus the other days when I didn't have any selections. The 100 pts target is looking mission impossible as things stand. |
|
By:
^^^ Or poss put in a lay for your stake only?
|
|
By:
Good idea, Lee.
The counterargument is that once 'caveats' are introduced and you start saying: this is the selection and at these odds, BUT, I'm going to do this and that in-running, it does start to complicate things a little! Good luck today. |

Sharron Macready, 1pt EW @ 17-2, 8.00 Southwell (4 PLACES)
I'm going to select Sharron Macready again, who did too much too soon on her latest start over 6f at Kempton when returning from a three month break, in what was a well-run contest. The winner is unexposed and the second has won since, so although that was just a fillies' handicap, it was probably fair form for the grade. Sharron Macready tries 5f for the first time this evening, which looks worth exploring given her run-style, and this is a drop a grade. A few firms are offering four places. Social City, 1pt EW @ 7-1, 8.30 Southwell Social City is another who was selected on the thread last time out. He hasn't shaped too badly in two runs back following an absence and rejoining Tony Carroll - when not given a hard ride over 14f at Wolverhampton in December, and last time over this evening's C/D, he made a big move on the home bend, presumably to try and get first run on a well-handicapped, George Boughey-trained odds-on fav, and he didn't see his race out, losing third place late on. He's 5lb below his last winning mark and hopefully now at peak-fitness. |
|
By:
GL today George (can't believe that I'm the first to say Sharron Macready
) |
|
By:
Sharron Macready was again keen while showing early pace, but no excuses based on how the race panned out given the eventual winner and third were on the pace too, and she backed out of it inside the final furlong. She's 1-1 on turf and may appreciate being back on the green stuff, but nothing positive to take from this evening's run.
Nothing from Social City. He is a 7YO now, so maybe his best racing days are behind him, unless he's just not as effective on the new surface at Southwell nowadays, despite having seemed versatile regarding synthetics in the past. Running P/L: +18.8 pts |

Day 45
Not a lot on my shortlist today, so just the single selection on one in the 7f novice at Newcastle. Burning The Bails, 1pt win @ 7-2, 4.30 Newcastle Burning The Bails, who cost 55,000 gns as a yearling, was a big price for his debut over 7f at Southwell in December, but he shaped quite encouragingly in finishing third behind Think Climate, who has looked very useful in winning both his AW starts and has been handed an official rating of 89. The time was over a second quicker than the other division and Burning The Bails finished clear of the fourth. The second, Prospering, who finished a short-head ahead of him, has subsequently gone down twice narrowly in maiden / novice company, and has been officially rated 75. I didn't think the race went Burning The Bails' way returned to the same C/D last month, where from off the pace he ended up challenging on the far side in a contest where the first six home were covered by just over a length. He's returning today from over six weeks off, it has to be hoped his draw in one doesn't prove to be an inconvenience, and handicaps will be an option after this, for owners who have been known to land the occasional gamble, but it will be surprising if he's not up to winning races at some point. |
