got to be impressed by Vauban today, waiting to here what plans Willie has for him, he wasn't at Naas today.
Andrew, did you see our old friend Noble Style ran another poor race at Chester yesterday, being gelded and the addition of blinkers made no difference, he did have another excuse as the ground was terrible. ![]() |
|
By:
I reckon the main problem with Noble Style is that he isn't a sprinter, but they keep running him at 6F. If you look at the list of Group race winners 3yo and older sired by Kingman, the vast majority are milers. You can make a case for Kinross as a sprinter, but even he has more success at 7F than 6F. Appleby seems to have read the 2000 Gns as showing that Noble Style didn't stay, whereas I'd say it just showed he isn't and probably never will be a Group 1 contender.
Nice 1M Group 3 coming up at Salisbury on the 17th, straight course (almost), probable good or good to firm ground, unlikely to attract a really top class runner, come on Charlie, you know it makes sense .... |

Good afternoon Guys,
Many thanks for the posts. Several meetings today, 5 in fact, but poor cards, the highest class of race in GB is 4 and the NH card at Roscommon isn't any better. Over at Deauville, a slightly better card, albeit both G1's are Arab races. At La Test De Buch (near Bordeaux) i was surprised to see the 108 rated Rajapour in a claiming race, a listed winner and G3 3rd prior to a couple of poor runs in group company including the G1 Prix Du Jockey Club LTO. He should be too good for this field and will probably be priced accordingly, albeit isn't not one for lumping on at long odds-on. There's a shortie running at Ripon i will be laying, the William Haggas trained 3 year-old Seendid at Ripon (7.40). Winner of a novice race at Newmarket in his penultimate run, although the form is ordinary at best. Very few in the field have run since and those that have didn't excel by any means. Stepped up to a Newmarket class 2 Heritage handicap next time out, but finished last of 12, clearly out of depth for such an inexperienced horse (a decent field). Steps up in trip to 12f and soft going to cope with (only raced on decent ground). Ripon is a world away from track configuration at Newmarket, but the trainer does have an excellent record here. At odds of 5/4 he's certainly short enough, but high-profile connections are obviously factored in. Good luck and have a nice Tuesday all. Stewarts Rise ![]() We went to Ascot (Perth) racecourse on a Boxing day in the late 90's (i was working in West Java) but i never got to the East coast, although my daughter lived/worked (casual) on that side post university. She was there for 22 months in Murray Bridge and Adelaide, but also got to visit Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. She loved the country, would return on a whim (now in München) and i totally understand her sentiments. Perth is a lovely city, but unfortunately, no aerospace industry. To be honest, the Melbourne Cup is way down on my bucket list and i very much doubt i will ever see it. At the top of my list, i've never been to Japan, so one of the major meetings there would be welcome (Japan Cup for example) and although i've been to USA twice (NY and LA, the latter for Saab) never for racing and i would like to see a Breeders Cup. Whether i do or not is a different story. Alan/Ashleigh I thought Vauban would win and he did quite cosily (i didn't back him) so Melbourne Cup entry accomplished. From what i understand he's entered in the Lonsdale Cup and Irish Leger, but if he was mine i would find a race at Flemington as a precursor to the big one. Irrespective of where he runs next, he must have a decent chance in November, but it's not a race i follow so much. As for Noble Style, i know after timing is frowned upon here, but i layed it yesterday (only to win £40) even though i was a big fan. He's not a Chester horse, soft/heavy going is not what he wants and was racing against elders for the first time. I actually thought it was an odd entry by Charlie, but he's trained more winners than me. Alan, i doubt Charlie reads the forum, least of all this thread, so maybe you can get Michael to call him nad pass on your advice. ![]() |

As I've indicated in a separate thread, my days on BF are at an end, as I refuse to give in to their nosing into my personal finances. I just wanted to add an extra message here, on the threads that have been the most worthwhile part of the forum in recent years.
I shall miss our discussions and debates about the horses, the tangents into other topics that have sometimes happened and the genuine interest that has been shown in the horses I've owned. Eagle Court should be running again at the end of next week, either Wolves on Friday or Newbury on Saturday. Best wshes to all the regulars on here. |

Shocking to have logged in mid-week to read this news. If a horse race owner and author cannot keep his account with out the intrusion police then it is surely curtains for us all eventually.
Absolutely bizarre that you could lose 50k in the stock market in one day and no-one blinks an eyebrow, you can go off to some ridiculously over priced restaurants and spend 10k on dinner but lose a grand on the horses and you are a problem gambler! If/when I receive the call I will also be leaving. There is not a single group that actually protects/supports people who like to gamble and gamble within their means. That is why I reduced my gambling to Saturdays and big meets only. In an effort to get bigger bets on. Not entirely successful as the TV sponsors still only offer you £2 e/w in a 30 runner handicap worth 150k+. All disgusting. GL to you Alan |

I keep reading that we have a very "racing friendly" prime minister. If so why isn't Sunak doing something to reign in the out of control Gambling Commission and their ludicrous ideas, which will be catastrophic for racing. Better still, can he not disband them altogether?

Good afternoon Guys from a pleasant, but very warm west of München,
A busy week, hence my first post on this thread since Tuesday, so many thanks for all the posts since, much appreciated as always. I'm actually in the office now catching up on paperwork, albeit with one eye on the RP/BF forum and leaving soon anyway. Typical Saturday cards in UK/Ireland with a couple of G3's at Newmarket and Haydock, but probably a better card over at the Curragh, even if it does appear to be an AOB/RM benefit day (when isn't it over there). The G3 sprint looks open and i don't understand why there's only a sole GB trained runner in the race, and at the meeting per se, €32,450 and €177,000 for winners of the G3 and G1 respectively is hardly small change. I guess one reason for no GB entries in the Phoenix Stakes for 2 year-olds could be the AOB dominance, he first won it in 1998 and followed up on another 16 occasions, although his stranglehold on the race has diminished recently, with only one win in the previous 5 years. AOB fields the likely favourite Unquestionable in the race (4.40) but i'm not convinced he should be, in fact i think it's quite an open field, at least among the front 4 in the betting. He has to reverse his previous run form with Bucanero Fuerte, the unbeaten filly Porta Fortuna receives 3 lb and Givemethebeatboys is certainly not out of it. Any rain would probably be a negative for Unquestionable and i will be layer (currently 3.30). Another one i feel can be layed is the William Haggas trained 3 year-old Tajanis (Newmarket 3.05) as i feel this one needs more time. Lightly raced, only 3 runs, the first couple in maidens and a novice stakes LTO. We can forgive his debut (last of 5) as he was green and although a better run next time out where he was really 3rd of 4 as the last one home (150/1) was tailed off. Stepped up in class LTO and was runner-up behind the now quite useful Sweet William (eased down) who has improved significantly since. Only 5 runners then, but again the 4th and 5th were tailed off/PU respectively. Obviously improving, down in class today and William Buick on board, but at odds of 3.50 i'm a layer. On the same card, i like Lethal Levi, a sprinter i've backed a few times, but often has hard luck in running. Steps up in trip to 7f, but i don't see this as a negative (2nd in a nursery back in time over the trip) and his record on the July course here is 2-2-1. The handicapper has relented a little dropping him by a pound to 98 and the very capable apprentice (33% strike rate last 14 days) takes off another 7 lb. Currently win odds of 6.0, i think he's a win/3TBP (2.28) bet to nothing. I mentioned last week i thought my current favourite filly Blue Rose Cen could go for the 12f Prix Vermeille on trials day in September as a precursor to the Arc, and i read in the RP yesterday this has been confirmed by the stable. If she stays and wins my small ante-post bet @ 24 will look better, but to be honest i think the Prix Opera on Arc Sunday is probably her race. I've already backed Feed The Flame for the big one anyway. Looking forward to both races and i suspect the trials will be my next race meeting as i'm back to Sweden on 25th and i doubt i will be in GB before September 10th. Good luck and have a nice Saturday all. Alan Hopefully, you are still looking in occasionally (i will email you in due course) as mentioned on your 'Farewell to BF' thread, i was surprised to read you are basically being coerced into closing your account, this whole GC/check issue is absolute tosh, and could even kill the industry. Mind you, nothing really shocks me about UK Government and policy these days, the best thing i did was leave, although i'm still proud to be Cornish. Many on the forum support your stance against providing financial detals, i certainly do, but hopefully you reconsider posting on the forum after the dust has settled; you can still retain your profile. I was flattered and grateful you posted on my thread often enough, always with interesting perspectives and knowledge of the game, your contribution was respected by all and will be missed. Additional thanks for your 14.49 post, good to read and i have no doubt others feel the same. Good luck with Eagle Court, this thread will continue to follow him. |

Excellent read as always today Andrew with the added bonus of putting up two winning lays.
Well done. Also to add to what has already been said by countless posters to read that The Anorak won’t be posting anymore wether it be on a horserace happening that day something from a previous day or as just snippets from his vast knowledge of racing is a great shame. All the best Alan and if the powers that be on Betfair just read some of the comments made may have a change of mind. Computer says no has long since been a laughing matter, but that is the way of life now it seems |

Good afternoon Guys,
Many thanks for the posts PHS/Lucky. Lucky, i totally agree with the latter part, it's absurd really, restricted accounts are not a defining solution by any means, they simply alienate customers who support the industry and a continuation could actually threaten the sports existence in future. A half-decent day for the thread yesterday, both lays beaten @ 13/8 (4th) and 9/4 (3rd). As for the EW selection Lethal Levi, once again excuses could be made (awkward at the start and denied a clear run) although to say he was unlucky wouldn't be a fair reflection. One day, everything will fall into place and he will win a decent sprint handicap, but i may have lost interest by then. Typical average Sunday cards at Windsor and Leicester, the Curragh has a listed race, there's a G1 in Hoppegarten (Berlin) but pride of place goes to Deauville with a decent group race card. The Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin is interesting by that fact that winners in 2021 and 2022 went on to win the Arc De Triomphe, although savvy punters know that Feed The Flame wins that race . I've mentioned the French challenger Simca Mille several times here in the past and i think he wins today although i'm not interested in backing at short odds this afternoon.I think there could be a bit of value in the Prix Francois Boutin (Deauville 12.38) that looks to be a good field, all winners and a couple unbeaten. Evade is likely to go off favourite for high profile connections courtesy of his win LTO, but the form is questionable with 4 of his 5 rivals failing to frank the form with wins since. The Charlie Appleby runner has to be respected, but again what is the form worth. In my opinion Grey Man is the one to be on, a 1-2-1 record (latter win by 5.5L) and defeat was by a head to the subsequent G3 winner Laulne who is useful Has been matched as high as 5.9 for buttons, and 4.80 for more, but liquidity on French markets is abysmal before racing. Generally a 3/1 chance with the books now, he could be a bet at the odds. Good luck and have a nice Sunday all. I occasionally mention aerospace here and to a lesser extent football, probably due to the team i support (Bristol City) although we did win yesterday. Alans week didn't get any better with Harry Kane leaving Tottenham after being sold to Bayern München. He actually arrived by private aircraft at Sonderflughafen Oberpfaffenhofen the military/private airport used by the DLR (where i work) and the Airtech Technical Campus, also by departing and visiting football teams including BM; we often see the coaches, albeit rarely the players and we didn't see Harry, apparently he was picked up by car. BM played in the DFL Super Cup last night (lost 3-0) but he only came on as a substitute in the 2nd half. I expected him to stay at Spurs to beat Alan Shearers long-standing goal scoring record, but i guess money talks. |

It's sad to see Alan going which i dont blame him not giving them his personal banking details. The first thing the Gambling Commission should
be doing is sorting out the bookmakers who restrict bets for pennies, last night i was restricted to a 10p patent bet , after betting horses for over 50yrs the enjoyment of the game is gone and i have now turned into a netflix addict.Nice winner there Andrew. Happysandwich, i have lost the bread pudding recipe you gave me, any chance of posting it again. |

I am amazed the Government don't read the forum to see for themselves that its impossible to do much damage to your finances by betting with the bookies, several examples even on this thread to show how much bookies ALLOW you to bet . I wonder are those who legally gamble on stocks and shares restricted to buying £3 to £5 shares I doubt it very much..Certain bookies have caused this to happen by their behaviour , one that springs to mind is the postman been allowed lose 11 Million or thereabouts , pure greed raised its ugly head in that particular case .
Maybe a equal solution would be that you can only lose as much as you are ALLOWED win , I'm sure that would please everyone except the bookies... |

Good evening Guys,
Many thanks for the posts. 2 selections, both winners, although the office cat could have picked Simca Millie at Hoppegarten, but i didn't back it as mentioned earlier and the SP was actually shorter than i expected. Connections will be hoping history repeats itself, as winners of this race in 2021 and 2022, Torquator Tasso and Alpinista respectively went on to win the Arc. A first G1 win, but 3 G2's and G3 in 8 stakes races, so not a forlorn hope by any means and a few could be tempted by AP odds of 30 on here. At Deauville, Grey Man was heavily backed in the opener, 11/4 to 3/1 with the books when i posted and bigger on here (Evade the original 7/4f) but i suspect this was a rick and as mentioned it was the value bet. Always up with the pace and the front two pulled well clear in the last 200 metres, the winner doing it cosily from the AOB runner. The link below is for a Lee Mottershead article in the RP that mentions Alan. https://www.racingpost.com/news/opinion/comment/racing-must-react-as-another-leading-punter-says-no-to-affordability-checks-aeIOk8A4acAC/ PHS Email sent (with Alans address) Workrider The affordability checks are inefficacious, increasing by the day and obviously creating negativity within the sport, so much so they are actually a threat to it's future existence. The GC consists of a 7 person committee, none of whom have any racing experience at all, it's complete madness and not the answer to problem gamblers Have a nice evening all. |

Good afternoon Guys from a sun-baked, almost tropical feel München.
33c forecast for later and the next 3 days. A busy week and i haven't had much chance to review the RP today, i was actually in the office for a few hours earlier, albeit private stuff, not working. A typical afternoon of meetings, something for everyone unless you're into the AW, group cards at Newbury, Curragh and Deauville with a tricky looking, large field St Wilfred Handicap at Ripon. Finding the winner of this race isn't easy by any means, is it ever, but many will be playing if only to keep Denise Coates suffering from abject poverty, bless her. I often put up a selection in the decent Saturday handicaps, even though my win record is bordering on the abysmal, but i only back them with small stakes anyway. My lucky pin has fallen on the Grant Tuer trained, 3 year-old filly Sophia's Starlight (Ripon3.15) lightly raced with a 3-1-2 record on turf from 8 runs. At the start of this year she was winless from 3 runs with a rating of 69, but won easily over 7f on the AW and in 7 subsequent runs has never raced off a mark lower than her previous run, now on 89. Stepping back into 6f has been the making of her and she may have been unlucky LTO (saddle slipped). 2 lb higher today and a reasonable draw in 6. Never raced at Ripon. One point to mention is Oli Stammers has been on-board in 7 of her previous 8 runs, yet has gone to Doncaster for 3 rides, all rank outsiders. Currently odds of 12 and 3.10 for 4/TBP. The AOB/RM combination will be expected to have a few winners at the Curragh, including the well-touted 2 year-old colt Henry Woodfellow in the G2 Futurity stakes, adding to an ever-growing list of potential classic candidates for next year. Not for me at the odds, but i think one of his stablemates, the same age filly Pearls And Rubies can be layed in the G2 Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes (4.00). I haven't been impressed with her recent couple of runs and Oddyssey (6/5f) let the Chesham stakes form down yesterday. The field looks half-decent with any amount of improvement to come from most who are lightly raced. Odds of 2.84 are short enough. Regular readers know that Alan can't post here, but he may still look in on-occasion assuming he's not too distracted at Newbury where his Eagle Court runs (4.00). It looks a difficult handicap and i think he will do well to win, but hopefully there's enough juice in the ground for him to show his best. I checked his trainer Michael Blakes 2023 stats with 4 year-olds + last night, from 16 runners he's had 7 winners for a 44% strike rate, so certainly a positive there. Good luck Alan and enjoy your afternoon there. Good luck and have a nice Saturday all. Fullback Many thanks for the ttt yesterday, much appreciated. A busy workload this week, but nothing new there. |
