Have noticed that previous.  He didn't help the horse there at Yarmouth.  Jockey all over the place with whip in wrong hand at different stages.  Horse was still green but needed a much stronger rider to steer it in the right direction.

In the 1st at Yarmouth today, if youve not seen it go and take a look. He settled the fav out the back then for some crazy reason rushed it around the outside of the field to force an already strong pace. Personally I think would have won if he had held on to it a lot longer than he did....very strange ride imo.

He's a 7lbs claimer. The 7lb allowance is there for a reason

Report DancingBraveTheBest August 28, 2022 4:00 PM BST
I know he is a 7lb claimer and totally understand the risks involved. Some apprentices are value for their claim but I am just highlighting that I dont think he is value.
Report DancingBraveTheBest August 28, 2022 4:01 PM BST
Am sure he is a nice bloke but most certainly will struggle to breakthrough imo.
Report sparrow August 28, 2022 4:08 PM BST
7lb claimers take time to learn their trade and need to be given that time before anyone jumps to conclusions.
Report DancingBraveTheBest August 28, 2022 4:15 PM BST
TameTheTiger said hes had 96 rides. How many rides do you think he needs to learn  Sparrow?

Report s.kenbo August 28, 2022 4:26 PM BST
He could’ve done 96 rides in 50 days. Most apprenticeships take years to learn and even longer to master.

You’re just another pocket talker moaning about another odds on loser. Don’t worry though, you aren’t alone!

Quite acceptable figure for a 7lb claimer. 96 rides at 16% is ok as not all the rides would have been in with a chance.

We shall see if he makes it or not but just give the boy a chance is all I say.

Pity I backed Temple Bruer, horse should have won,Dancingbrave is correct that Conor has still got to strengthen up,u often find that in young appys they lack the strength in sprint races to get go forward in the lat furlong
Report DancingBraveTheBest August 28, 2022 11:25 PM BST
Yes Tangle, i agree it should have won. Tbh Connor looked good on the horse, uses the whip well and pushes horses in rhythm but his decision to rush forward on his ride in the 1st is unfathomable in my eyes. Hopefully he will learn by his mistakes but like I have previously said I will steer clear until I see some evidence of improvement.

sparrow , they aren't given time to develop , the 7lbs is exploited at the lowest grade by tinpot trainers desperate for a winner at any costs.
The system needs revising soon
Report sparrow August 31, 2022 4:30 PM BST
Hushwing.....You may recall even Hollie Doyle being slated on here as a 5 and 7lb claimer. As you rightly say these claimers need time but within that time they need to get experience riding against established jockeys.

As I recall Hannon didn't give her too many chances and most of her early rides were from William Stone. Of course she has turned out an exceptional jockey so a little unfair to use her as a comparison to any apprentice.

Report DancingBraveTheBest August 31, 2022 5:47 PM BST
I feel pretty much any jockey would have won on that one today, it fairly hosed up. Its the ones that should have won that didn't due to jockey error and that's where I feel Connor is lacking inho.

I didn't, just picking up from your 4.30pm post...and yes agree isn't fair to use hollie as a yardstick
my point was mainly that people were talking nonsense about hollie as apprentice & the planas hype is also total nonsense
as per the figs

Report sparrow August 31, 2022 6:21 PM BST
Yes I think we can agree on that but the slating of apprentice jockeys happens just too much on here.
Report Hushwing. August 31, 2022 7:15 PM BST
Sparrow i have lots of ideas for improving the system to help these youngsters become established jockeys.
Personally, I don't believe just altering the allowance is the best way to go .

Jockeys should have x amount of apprentice rides /wins before switching into normal races.
This would give them some time to develop with the help of coaches etc. How many times have we seen a gamble landed by a young lad on his first ride.

I also think the type of races in which allowances are applied should be updated. Maidens / novice races certainly should no longer be 'picked off' cheaply given there importance and, offsetting a
the penalty is surely against the point of the penalty.

Perhaps look at the grade of handicap claims can be taken . Stop them wasting 7lbs on banded nonsense.

Maybe limit external rides or alter the allowance for these rides

Report sparrow August 31, 2022 10:16 PM BST
Too many handicaps in my view hushwing and I would like see more claiming races and this I think would be less pressure on claiming jockeys. Just keep the claiming jockeys to the lower end handicaps where there are far more horses in training.
Report Hushwing. September 1, 2022 9:56 AM BST
Conor Planas is a talented young apprentice and his problem stems from being snapped up by Tony Hinds 'winner factory' .
They couldn't care less about what's best for the lad or the type of rides booked. The quality of his rides and grades competing at is very poor and he's being managed very badly.
