Wrong forum but if you like war documentaries this is excellent, first season chronicles Hitlers rise to power and the political manouvreing by all the main protaganists culminating in the Night Of The Long Knives.

Season 2 is all about his failed attempts to conquer Russia.

The show has commentaries from different experts who all adopt one of the main characters and try to unpick the minds of said characters.

It is brilliantly done. The BBC for all their faults do history documentaries better than anyone else in my opinion. The likes of Simon Schama's History of Britain or Michael Wood's The Story of China are also excellent viewing. The one I would recommend above all others is The Death of Yugoslavia, a superb insight into the Balkans War.

Interesting book on the rise of the Nazis by Professor Anthony C Sutton

Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler: The Astonishing True Story of the American Financiers Who Bankrolled the Nazis

'The contribution made by American capitalism to German war preparations can only be described as phenomenal. It was certainly crucial to German military capabilities...Not only was an influential sector of American business aware of the nature of Naziism, but for its own purposes aided Naziism wherever possible (and profitable) - with full knowledge that the probable outcome would be war involving Europe and the United States'. Penetrating a cloak of falsehood, deception and duplicity, Professor Antony C. Sutton reveals one of the most remarkable but unreported facts of the Second World War: that key Wall Street banks and American businesses supported Hitler's rise to power by financing and trading with Nazi Germany. Carefully tracing this closely guarded secret through original documents and eyewitness accounts, Sutton comes to the unsavoury conclusion that the catastrophic Second World War was extremely profitable for a select group of financial insiders. He presents a thoroughly documented account of the role played by J.P. Morgan, T.W. Lamont, the Rockefeller interests, General Electric Company, Standard Oil, National City Bank, Chase and Manhattan banks, Kuhn, Loeb and Company, General Motors, the Ford Motor Company, and scores of others in helping to prepare the bloodiest, most destructive war in history. This classic study, first published in 1976 - the third volume of a trilogy - is reproduced here in its original form. The other volumes in the series study the 1917 Lenin-Trotsky Revolution in Russia and the 1933 election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the United States.

My old uncle used to say, "we'd have been better off under the Nazis."

his comment didn't always go down well at the British Legion club though Plain

A great book on the fall of the Nazi's is 'Promise me you'll kill yourself' by Florian Huber
It focusses on what defeat meant to the ordinary German...and the mass suicides that came with it.
Bodies were constantly flowing down rivers or found hanging in trees or with their heads shot off.

Mothers in their thousands had to drown their own kids before killing themselves...many succeded in killing their children but couldnt kill themselves and had to live with that fact.

I Find that truely amazing Leif, have never heard that before.Absolutely terrible behaviour from those banks and large companies ,hard to comprehend. Also staggering that the whole thing was less than 80 years ago.The only saving grace is that when one dispicable, loathsome figure appears on the world stage there are good people about to remedy the situation

JJmbe, Monarch. The DoY is a fantastic programme but requires concentration to view it as it is quite dense and the subject matter is fiendishly complicated. I watched it "live" as it were and recall finding it on Youtube a few years back. May be worth checking.

Not something that most people think about, Spent 3 weeks there in 2006 during the world cup camping anywhere and everywhere, still felt a weird undercurrent of some of the older folk in some of the smaller places being i dont know embarrased/ashamed, couldn't put my finger on it they just could not do enough to help out or assist, without doubt the most hospitable and freindly people i've ever met.

JJmbe/Donegal - Yes, The Death of Yugoslavia requires plenty of close concentration. I think mainly because it was made right at the end of the conflict, and includes interviews with many of the main protagonists of the time (Milosevic etc), some of whom went on to face trail for war crimes.

JJmbe - Its all on Youtube. Link to episode 1 below:

I think a lot of the stories are made up.
The victors write the history books.
No nation can be as evil as they're made out to be.

Although there's one who posts on here I wouldn't trust holding my balls.

Hitllers  Gold on Sky history download is a absolutley amazind documenratry about how he came to power and how he financed it with the help of huge companys which still trade today,German and American.
Amazingly Ford motor co kept production going in Germany till Hitler declared war on the U.S in 1941 and then Ford actually claimed and got war reparations from the U.S govt for bombing their factorys after the war ended.

Never understood the fascination for delving more into a regime that killed millions. What they did couldn't have been more wrong. Why would you need to know anything more than that?

more pertinent would be a prgramme about the catastrophe of socialism and the appalling starvation slaughter and misery it has wrought on humanity. the nazis were a long time ago but the legacy of the ussr endures and the ccp north korea vietnam cuba venezuela vietnam are still at it.

If you were interested in these documentary then I can recommend the BBC4 documentary " The US and the holocaust which has been on over the last few weeks, 2 hours long and some harrowing viewing but it's filled in gaps in my knowledge about why the US was slow to help the allies and the involvement of people like Charles Lyndbergh the Air pioneer and his America first group, also BBC2s documentary last night "How the Holocaust began" was very interesting showing how local people took part in the murder of all the Jewish people in Lithuania, Poland etc as his army marched towards Russia, a tough night's viewing.

Last night's BBC2 programme was particularly chilling. Frightening to think that so many Jews were killed by their fellow countrymen. At that time the extermination camps had not been invented

Another on the subject on BBC4 tonight at 10.

Storyville - Three Minutes: A Lengthening

Three minutes of footage, filmed in 1938, is all that remains of the Jewish community of Nasielsk, Poland. Storyville unravels the tales hidden within the celluloid.

I wouldn';t give Hitler and his gangsters the oxygen of publicity.
Never fought anyone in his life.  Little chit.  He ran messages during the Great War, nothing else.
It says it all about the tiny, minute, pitiful mentality of this vicious man that he felt compelled to top himself rather than face his crimes.

The end of the US and the Holocaust doc last night showed how history can repeat itself showing the storming of the building at the end of the Trump era with many of his white supremist supporters wearing swasikas on their T Shirts whilst he followed a policy of America First etc, of course there was ethnic cleansing in old Yugoslavia but we all thought it could never happen again!

I don;t make assumptions about what was know or not known about the Nazis before the war actually started.  As soon as he got his foot in the door in '33 Germany started breaking and dismantling the Versailles treaty.  Nobody paid heed or listened.  As we know today business, trade and finance doesn't just stop because there is "a war on".
Nobody bar Hitler, his gangsters and weak-kneed appeasers were responsible for the 2nd World war, whatever anyone says, and thus all the consequences.
And that is the bottom line.
