agreed. Very, very good. the first season was truly educational. We all think we know the lot about all of this but that series taught me lots.

Cheers op ill give this a watch, apart from sport the tv is utter garbage, i only just finished watching World at War again always learn and see things you missed on previous viewings.

It is brilliantly done. The BBC for all their faults do history documentaries better than anyone else in my opinion. The likes of Simon Schama's History of Britain or Michael Wood's The Story of China are also excellent viewing. The one I would recommend above all others is The Death of Yugoslavia, a superb insight into the Balkans War.

Is Death of Yugosalvia being shown on any channel at the moment, really fancy learning a bit more.

A great book on the fall of the Nazi's is 'Promise me you'll kill yourself' by Florian Huber
It focusses on what defeat meant to the ordinary German...and the mass suicides that came with it.
Bodies were constantly flowing down rivers or found hanging in trees or with their heads shot off.

Mothers in their thousands had to drown their own kids before killing themselves...many succeded in killing their children but couldnt kill themselves and had to live with that fact.

Harrowing that last line dusty.

the history channel is awash with nazis. no end to programmes about adolf. might be an idea to make a few more about the disaster that is communism. and they are still at it.

most of those women killed themselves after being raped by the red army or to save themselves from it. it was a brutal whirlwind of murder of civilians and millions raped.

I Find that truely amazing Leif,have never heard that before.Absolutely terrible behaviour from those banks and large companies ,hard to comprehend. Also staggering that the whole thing was less than 80 years ago.The only saving grace is that when one dispicable,loathsome figure appears on the world stage there are good people about to remedy the situation

JJmbe, Monarch. The DoY is a fantastic programme but requires concentration to view it as it is quite dense and the subject matter is fiendishly complicated. I watched it "live" as it were and recall finding it on Youtube a few years back. May be worth checking.

Not something that most people think about, Spent 3 weeks there in 2006 during the world cup camping anywhere and everywhere, still felt a weird undercurrent of some of the older folk in some of the smaller places being i dont know embarrased/ashamed, couldn't put my finger on it they just could not do enough to help out or assist, without doubt the most hospitable and freindly people i've ever met.

JJmbe/Donegal - Yes, The Death of Yugoslavia requires plenty of close concentration. I think mainly because it was made right at the end of the conflict, and includes interviews with many of the main protagonists of the time (Milosevic etc), some of whom went on to face trail for war crimes.

Hitllers  Gold on Sky history download is a absolutley amazind documenratry about how he came to power and how he financed it with the help of huge companys which still trade today,German and American.
Amazingly Ford motor co kept production going in Germany till Hitler declared war on the U.S in 1941 and then Ford actually claimed and got war reparations from the U.S govt for bombing their factorys after the war ended.

Never understood the fascination for delving more into a regime that killed millions. What they did couldn't have been more wrong. Why would you need to know anything more than that?

If you were interested in these documentary then I can recommend the BBC4 documentary " The US and the holocaust which has been on over the last few weeks, 2 hours long and some harrowing viewing but it's filled in gaps in my knowledge about why the US was slow to help the allies and the involvement of people like Charles Lyndbergh the Air pioneer and his America first group, also BBC2s documentary last night "How the Holocaust began" was very interesting showing how local people took part in the murder of all the Jewish people in Lithuania, Poland etc as his army marched towards Russia, a tough night's viewing.

Last night's BBC2 programme was particularly chilling. Frightening to think that so many Jews were killed by their fellow countrymen. At that time the extermination camps had not been invented

The end of the US and the Holocaust doc last night showed how history can repeat itself showing the storming of the building at the end of the Trump era with many of his white supremist supporters wearing swasikas on their T Shirts whilst he followed a policy of America First etc, of course there was ethnic cleansing in old Yugoslavia but we all thought it could never happen again!

I watched the documentary on Vivian Westwood last week…..they were wearing swastikas in England late 70s early 80s.

Mitolo makes some valid points. I just looked up 'what is Cambodia famous for'. No mention of the man who killed a quarter of the population less than 50 years ago.

I don;t make assumptions about what was know or not known about the Nazis before the war actually started.  As soon as he got his foot in the door in '33 Germany started breaking and dismantling the Versailles treaty.  Nobody paid heed or listened.  As we know today business, trade and finance doesn't just stop because there is "a war on".
Nobody bar Hitler, his gangsters and weak-kneed appeasers were responsible for the 2nd World war, whatever anyone says, and thus all the consequences.
And that is the bottom line.

I take all this modern "new" news with a huge pinch of salt.  I wouldn't trust the BBC to tell me the truth about Saturday coming after Friday.  I simply do not trust the BBC.

Watching this now, brilliant, a real eye opener as to the attitude in the states towards the Jews, the anecdotes told by the people that lived through this are really quite heart wrenching.

99% of people have no clue about history, and almost as many have no interest in it unless its used to score political brownie points.

Harrowing footage recorded by the German soldiers of rows and rows of Jewish people stripped naked and shot, the actual footage is shown in the program, they were filmed as "trophies" for the soldiers.

Have seen a lot of the footage before, but even watching it still hard to believe it!

I don;t find it entertaining at all, primarily because I point blank refuse to watch it.

My parents were in the forces during the war and probably others on here had parents that fought in it as well and I don't remember them telling me of any Gas Chambers that were built by the Allies to kill millions of Jewish people and I have never heard of the remnants of any being found so are you another "Holocaust Denier"?

The Germans and Japanese committed many atrocities during the war and I wonder if they should pay reparation to The UK, France and America among other Countries as the Americans and probably the UK are expected to pay some to black people for their treatment mainly in the 19th Century.

Both my grandparents served through WW1 and WW2 big aitch,my father and his brothers served after,agree with your observations.I stood in Bergen Belsen as a 17 year old soldier and anyone who thinks the holocaust never happened should visit there or any such camp and think again!!

Well said big aitch and CagliariC.  And my sympathies to you cag for having had to witness such horrors as part of your job.

I have thought several times - to go off at a tangent - of the England football squad visiting present day Auschwich.  Which they did during one tournament recently.  Why I don't know.
I do know this however, had I been a member of a Scotland squad required to attend such a visit - I would have told my manager I wasn;t going.  Had he or anybody else insisted I would have told them to give me my passport.  Even if it meant never being selected again.
I am all for keeping the chronicles and the remembrance of the Holocaust alive and respected but I fail see the attraction in ogling at and imagining such misery, on location.

My visit was part of an education trip in the 70s LH whilst we were on exercise at Reinsehlen,we met with some former German soldiers who lived in Soltau and Lunenburg before WW 2,they acknowledged what had gone on.

I was brought up by a mother that was chicken oriental when it came to religion - she did the lot to keep a small local church going and made loadsa proggy mats etc for Durham Cathedral - she was very gud at it and made em lotsa muny but thats wot its all about cos the church -of any origin- has obscene amounts of money even when nee one turns up nowadays other than for funerals which cost an absolute fortune

Ive telt me pals that when i go to chuck me in a wheelie bin and collect the insurance muny and for 2nd best go for a no frills cremation
