You could do that betting 4% a runner.
|
|
By:
they would not take any bets at 4% a runner there advert had to compare well with the other firms.

By:
1/3 the odds is an absolute gift, especially for multiples.

stewarty b, I only ever had one bet with Manny Bernstein it was £25 win at 7/2 with a £25 free bet on the same which was a CH4 morning line nationwide gamble on a Dandy Nicholls sprinter. Golden days they were when the bookies had to hold their advertised prices until 10.15 on a Saturday morning.

Couldn't find any reference to football pools but an excellent webpage here on the history of the company is well worth reading.

mmmalushka, I still have an account with them abeit it needs to be updated which might happen as I know of no other bookmaker that will take a bet over the phone.

A couple of big ones missing. Stan James I haven't seen mentioned and I managed a shop in Kings X which belonged to, at that time, the biggest betting shop chain in the country. Who could that be?
|

By:
Anyone remember Alfie Hunt, I worked for him in Islington back in the early 70's or David Reef, I managed his shop on the Canal Bridge in the Old Kent Rd, last job I had before I done a runner to Benidorm!

off subject but racing related , i go to car boots and antique fairs when i can and often pick up interesting items or old crap as the missus calls it, anyway i have this small racecard dated" 4 th april , third spring meeting 1920,electriclight racecourse promanade meetingshropshire turf club." only 4 pages and has 4 races, a hurdle ,a steeplechase, a flat race ,and the lundieking plate , also says a totalisator will be operated for owners and members of the club who desire a wager . 10%of the total proceeds will be donated to seamans charities .anyway anyone know anything about this ? think it might be some fairground/seaside type amuesment game . be interesting to find out more . cant find anything on the net.

Any one on here remember Jack Hardy? As well as training horses ( his best one was probably Glanford Brigg ) he used to have betting shops in the Worksop/ North Notts area. One shop was next to the station hotel in Worksop. I think he also had a shop in Retford.
|
|
By:
Scrabbler, you are right about the shop in Retford although I can't actually recall if it was Hardy.Going back to 1988 I was on a course with Notts Police, billeted at RAF Police school at Newton.Popped in one day and put on a £10 ew treble, just a tiny shop if memory serves correctly, think the only one in town.
Anyway, forgot all about the bet and came across the slip about 10 months later, had no idea if any returns were due and the slip was almost unreadable.Sent it to a mate who took it into the shop and sent a recorded delivery letter stuffed with money, can't remember how much but all three horses had won. Another example of how honest the majority of bookmakers are imo. |

Not sure this is relevant to the thread but remember Arthur Prince being new on the block in Essex in the 80s,competing against the big 3 with many concessions?
|
|
By:
There was a fly by night who ripped off many including an RP columnist by offering a book that could never be sustained, might also have been in Essex?
|

By:
Dave Nevison was caught by said bookie.
