both had big adverts in the sporting life on the opening day of the 1993 cheltenham festival

ready racing they were giving away a £25 free bet if you opened an account perhaps they were the first to offer that sort of thing.

las vegas bookmakers they were 1/3rd the odds and only %5 tax all singles

You could do that betting 4% a runner.

they would not take any bets at 4% a runner there advert had to compare well with the other firms.

1/3 the odds is an absolute gift, especially for multiples.

stewarty b, I only ever had one bet with Manny Bernstein it was £25 win at 7/2 with a £25 free bet on the same which was a CH4 morning line nationwide gamble on a Dandy Nicholls sprinter. Golden days they were when the bookies had to hold their advertised prices until 10.15 on a Saturday morning.

Couldn't find any reference to football pools but an excellent webpage here on the history of the company is well worth reading.

A couple of big ones missing. Stan James I haven't seen mentioned and I managed a shop in Kings X which belonged to, at that time, the biggest betting shop chain in the country. Who could that be?

off subject but racing related , i go to car boots and antique fairs when i can and often pick up interesting items or  old crap as the missus calls it, anyway i have this small racecard dated" 4 th april , third spring meeting  1920,electriclight racecourse  promanade meetingshropshire turf club." only 4 pages and has 4 races, a hurdle  ,a steeplechase, a flat race ,and the lundieking plate , also says a totalisator will be operated for owners and members of the club who desire a wager . 10%of the total proceeds will be donated to seamans charities .anyway anyone know anything about this ?  think it might be some fairground/seaside  type amuesment game . be interesting to find out more . cant find anything on the net.

Still going Duke https://www.mannybernstein.co.uk/ Not sure whether the same owner, Chris Reid. I think he used to live out Woodhouse Eaves(might still do)He used to rock up to dogs(and races) on Thursday and Saturday in his Roller Reg plate CHR1S.Were you around then mate. Good old Blackbird Road. First went there circa 1972 when I was 12, immediately hooked Remember Jimsun winning 1974 Midlands Grand Prix before going on to win the Derby
Brian Ingamills used to stand there and had a few shops in Leicester and Skeggy I think as well. He got the hump when he got stung one night when a Dog called 'Dusty Track' trained by Rose & John Kimberly was backed from about 8/1 into 1/2. I met the owner a couple of months before when my dog was moved from Stan Lee to the Kimberley's. The dog nearly knocked over at first bend and found all sorts of trouble down the back straight when making up ground, still about 5 lengths down at the last bend but won by half a length to great cheering from the crowd and murmurings of being ripped off from the bookies. Ivan Marks was part of the coup so to speak.
Some Other Bookies were  Aubrey Chapman, Fred Mason, Eric Flavell and well known rails bookmaker Roy Christie

Any one on here remember Jack Hardy? As well as training horses ( his best one was probably Glanford Brigg ) he used to have betting shops in the Worksop/ North Notts area.  One shop was next to the station hotel in Worksop. I think he also had a shop in Retford.

Scrabbler, you are right about the shop in Retford although I can't actually recall if it was Hardy.Going back to 1988 I was on a course with Notts Police, billeted at RAF Police school at Newton.Popped in one day and put on a £10 ew treble, just a tiny shop if memory serves correctly, think the only one in town.

Anyway, forgot all about the bet and came across the slip about 10 months later, had no idea if any returns were due and the slip was almost unreadable.Sent it to a mate who took it into the shop and sent a recorded delivery letter stuffed with money, can't remember how much but all three horses had won.

Another example of how honest the majority of bookmakers are imo.
