Early days but I caught site of an alarming email this week. A leading summer racing venue stated that if they had to race behind closed doors this summer it would probably be their last season. They are probably like many on the brink financially if independently owned and may need a JC takeover to survive.

I heard something a couple of weeks ago by your description now we know it’s the same one,

The racecourses have already been given a chunk of money ,no idea how it’s been divided.

Wasn't it Newton Abbott?

Article was in the Racing Post.

Sparrow that isn’t the one I mean ,over the years I have heard so many negative rumours of which hardly any of them turn out to be true so on that basis it would be unfair to name the course.

Regarding newton Abbott I did read that article that would be a real shame if that was in trouble,I know a few years ago they stopped the two day meetings as it wasnt viable for many reasons including keeping stable staff overnight

The main alternative use for racecourse land is for housing and that market too might be in the doldrums for a bit (it is hard to be certain though). Even so, for that reason it would probably be the more urban courses in danger.

The courses that are surrounded by housing areas are always going to be vulnerable. Worcester, Newton Abbot, Newbury etc. Wincanton might seem vulnerable but it is well outside the town and is owned by the Jockey club. I do fear for places like Hereford though.

Sageform Worcester is on a flood plane should be safe.

Hereford is run by ARC and I think owned by them so as part of that large group you'd think it has more scope to ride this out.

Afternoon Foxy, was tipped up three that may be in danger if this goes on for a length of time, all in Ind category.

Let's face it there are too many crap racecourses putting on low-grade racing and they only encourage the mediocre. I'd get rid of:

Bangor
Bath
Beverley
Brighton
Carlisle
Cartmel
Catterick
Chelmsford
Ffos Las
Fontwell
Yarmouth
Hamilton
Hereford
Hexham
Kelso
Lingfield
Ludlow
Market Rasen
Newcastle
Nottingham
Plumpton
Pontefract
Redcar
Ripon
Sedgefield
Southwell
Stratford
Taunton
Thirsk
Uttoxeter
Warwick
Wolverhampton
Worcester

None of the above needed.

I thought you wanted to keep Yarmouth for a minute then spotted it next to Fontwell.

Johnny, we might as well move the lot to Ireland and be done with it! I agree that we have too many courses but Newcastle is by far the best AW course and Chelmsford is well positioned for spectators and trainers around Newmarket. Southwell is surplus to requirements despite having a different surface as are Hereford, Ludlow, Catterick, Fakenham and Fontwell to name a few. We need more courses that can hold 4 or 5 day meetings with more than one course like Cheltenham and more races per day to reduce overhead costs. It seems daft to me to have an afternoon and an evening meeting at different courses. Why can't they have 12 or 14 flat races from 1.30 to 8.30 in the summer? Have a one hour break to move the rails after 7 races if necessary.

I'd agree with a lot of that Sageform and often wondered why you couldn't have an 8 or 9 race card in the winter, more in the summer.

There’s a few tracks I don’t particularly like but we have a great variety of racecourses I wouldn’t want to lose any.

Especially bangor,Kelso, fontwell plumpton, warwick and market rasen which is a top class racecourse admittedly in the middle of nowhere of your list jm

Sageform, you are the first person I know who likes Newcastle AW. Most of us consider it the worst with their famous 6f crawl and 2f sprint up that awful straight mile.

I have heard there are question marks over two courses foxy- both  in Yorkshire but let us hope no racecourses are casualties.

I would maintain the maximum courses possible. UK racings strength is its diversity of tracks which means most of us around the country are not too far away from a track.

I think it would make for very boring racing having say 10 consequtive race meetings in a row at a particular track like in the states.

what annoys me is when ascot and Kempton hold meetings on the same day. idiotic.

They have to be Ripon and Thirsk I suspect. Both tracks have the majority of their fixtures in the first half of the Flat season, not least Thirsk.

On a slight tangent, according to Wiki there are 360 racecourses and 3000 meetings in Oz. I know there will be a number of those only staging 1 or 2 days a year such as Birdsville but that's a lot of racing for a country with about one third the population of the UK.

Absolutely sparrow as I say there’s a couple I don’t particularly enjoy but they are part of this great sport ,a wet Monday at plumpton can be just as enjoyable as a summers day at Uttoxeter.
