Agree with the kings Best comments. I had followed this horse from the day he won the Acomb. Beautiful looking horse and thought he would have a great future in front of him. I think he finished last behind Distant music on the July course and then on Guineas day was awash with sweat in the paddock. i just couldn't back him on the day. What a mistake. A very underrated horse imo and one of the best Guineas winners I have seen live. Masterful Fallon at his best and kicked the iron horse out of the way in the process. Not sure he would have stayed at Epsom though.

Everytime I watch a re-run of the Derby, I still think that EGS is going to win

I saw El Gran Senor several times in Kentucky in the 90s. He had an aura about him even in those days which was probably unwarranted as he wasn’t an exceptional stallion in truth. Although to be fair he suffered fertility problems and his record would most likely have looked better had he been able to produce more foals than his 415 lifetime total.

yep that's right. A lot of people thought that he did well to get it so close. I'm not so sure I concur with that opinion.

In the book Horsetrader Magnier had a big ew bet on Secreto in the Derby. I can't believe that his son did them out of a $80 million syndication and that some arrangement wasn't made in light of what was at stake. All credit to them for running the horse.

Speaking of jockeys, and this is once again back in the 90s, we had an office in London and one of the girls I worked with was going out with a jockey who had previously won an Arc. One day she came in with a big bag of cash, around four grand, and asked if any of us would drive her to Newmarket as her boyfriend wanted a decent bet on one of his rides that afternoon. It won too.

I backed it ante post and on the day of the race backed the winner as it looked to me the only horse that could beat it.
Ended up I won £50 more with the winner. |

TryMyBrest : Makes sense. Timeform tipped up Secreto on stamina doubts concerning the favourite. Doesn't mean Magnier wanted El Gran Senor beaten, obviously. But Secreto was c 12/1 if memory serves.
