We're 3 weeks behind Italy in this pandemic cycle & their lockdown is currently scheduled to end 3 May.

We won't be ending our lockdown before Italy does.

Bear in mind also, their lockdown is more strict.

That 1.05 on offer for racing not to be back 1st May is like betting tomorrow's Sunday.

When extensive testing is finally done people will realise the number of cases are at least 15x more than official figures and the death rate well below 1% with most of that being people who were dying anyway imo.
Not saying its not a complete tragedy, but I personally fear the effects on the economy will kill more.

I said before the lockdown, we had as much to fear from economic issues as the virus so I agree with latalomne re the importance of coming out of lockdown at the right time

the right time has to be a balance between nhs coping, deaths & saving as many jobs as possible, almost definitely that end of lockdown will be phased over weeks, we won't return to normal for a long timne

Agree with sometime in june for racing in uk/ire to return

i think you may also find that 15x more is only maybe 5% of the population tbh

can you imagine the inability for NHS to cope if it went full population ?

frightening

how could any pub/restaurant open and make a profit with only a certain amount of people allowed in

other side of coin is to open as normal and re spread virus

bleak outlook but after today i just cant see a short term fix , even a gradual one , sorry

Whenever the lockdown ends, the most vulnerable will have to continue to be shielded until a vaccine is found.

what i will say..if this lockdown (partial in reality) wasnt imposed..the country would almost certainly be ravaged,999 would be worthless and people would would die in their homes.

There seems to be an idea that the whole process of re-starting and therefore trying to save the economy is something that will be able to be done  alongside the continual, and perhaps increased deaths that will inevitably carry on happening, how can this be? people will be getting ill and causing business's to shut down again after just opening up again due to self isolation with ensuing chaos!!

What would be worse still, and would happen, is some business will see some staff members go down, but desperate to save their business will push on and make matters worse.

Something else that occured to me that perhaps someone could explain if I'm missing something is this, countries that have managed the lock downs well i.e. South Korea, Germany, those countries, once the lock downs have been released are going to be more susceptible because they've successfully protected more people through the lock down and therefore have more victims for the virus to infect once they are free to go about normal life.

When considering this I understand more the herd immunity theory and the need to get things done quicker, as it seems, most will be infected anyway... if you could of course prevent the health services from getting over-run which is the great problem.

they'll have little option without a vaccine, it will be managed over weeks/months so yes people will get sick, it will flare up and we might go backwards before we get sorted

the news earlier in week re trials due to start and lots of teams working on the vaccine solution, just the time it takes to go through those trials, think one of those was Cambridge hoping to start in late april, another was june,

They are experimenting with existing drugs so no red tape with getting them through trials etc, hopefully they will find something that defeats it which is already in the medicine cabinet.....

Covid-19 is indiscriminate, invisible and asymptomatic, and it's also more deadly with no cure. On the other hand there are several causes of cancer, and not usually by chance it happens unlike heart diseases or heart attacks usually genetic and hereditary.

We cannot totally ban Chinese visitors or British subjects travelling to and from China, but we can introduce  very strict restriction on it until Covid-19 is history. At the same time boycott Chinese goods and services from mainland China until a financial compensation package can be agreed upon.

China will need to help fund the economic and health costs arising from Covid-19. And, they must not be permitted to buy British companies at present knockdown prices in the UK and the rest of the world. And, Trump will see to that, I've little doubt.

The staggered lifting of lockdown will be seen as discrimination and unfair by some, and could be extremely difficult to execute and police. However, certain businesses not dealing with the masses eg one to one eg plumber, call-out locksmith, driving instructor, takeaway (no restaurant), etc could be permitted to start trading again.

It really is a tough balancing act between trying to maintain any sort of economy and stopping a potential 2nd wave and over loading the NHS. Interesting that the furlough scheme ends in May I really can't see them wanting to be extending that past that date unless absolutely necessary. Perhaps someone clued up on this can help answer this as im not expert but given we have now been locked down for nearly 3 weeks should we not be seeing the spread decrease? If 95% are complying as we are told how can we be getting all these new cases and should it now be decreasing?

Hello
Our "experts" reckon deaths are 10 to 14 days behind positive cases so this number of deaths likely for a while yet and likely increasing.
Also recording statistics does seem pretty haphazard so numbers being added yesterday  from days ago

We are only in the First round of this fight against this Virus. All of us must be prepared for a very long fight. lets all stick to the rules and remember this. Everyday that goes past is a day nearer in defeating this invisible enemy.

Yes Isleham, Friday was the first time I'd heard them say that of the 900 deaths only 100+ were from Thursday with the other 800 coming from the previous 10 days. Slightly surprised that the collation of all stats is not more up to date than that.

On one of these daily briefings they said they get 2 sets of figures, one from the NHS which the get daily and although not 100% accurate, it gives them a rough idea where they are. The other was from national statistics which I would think is when the deaths are registered. Cant remember exactly but I'm sure he said they were weekly and more accurate and based on vivid appearing on the death certificate. That's what i remember, might not be totally correct.

I think a logical time to start is May 1st.

I dont think a gradual balance movement of young people first works at all.

But one of the things it does have going for it that Furlough ends May.

Youd have to presume that a huge majority of staff that are furloughed are 18-40?

Could let these people back to normal and wouldnt have to pay them furlough.

Act as a test to see if it causes havoc again.

forget your tip toe approach

any ease in lockdown increases spread , this is highly contagious and even spread by folk who don't know they have it

so easing lockdown increases spread , back to herd immunity in reality

it really is economy v human life

Human life for me all the way , what about you guys what do you choose ?

The virus still infects but slowly
Its not a matter of valuing life over economy
