tommorow morning hundreds of thousands will be packed on the tube trains sitting and standing face to face then getting off at different parts of the capital and going into retail / offices/etc spreading it for 8 or so hours and then coming back onto the trains and taking it back to various parts of the country and then repeating the same for the next 5 days plus add in manchester /birmingham and all the other citys . a few race meetings aint gonna make a difference

My annoyance with news reports about how many more people have the virus is where did they get it from. The Government appears to have stopped tracking or even recording cases unless seriously ill. The big question is at the end of March how many people have contracted the virus who went to the Cheltenham festival. Then you will know the impact of sporting fixtures.

The scariest is the carriers ie those with the virus (but not ill) could spread the virus to others who'd be more susceptible esp the elderly through the adult individuals these carriers come in contact with and who then transfer them to their elderly parents, relatives and friends.
If I'm not mistaken the London Tube and Buses are already much less occupied (I've seen videos showing a ghost platform in the Underground and bus empty during peak hours). |

most are in a supermarket less than 60 mins[ not 6 hrs ] they don't travel there on a bus,train,50 seater coach they don't socialise,natter away interact with tens of people, they don't move from toilets,to bars,to food outlets, etc etc then return by sed coaches,buses,taxis,trains, to bars, eateries,hotels,b n b.s etc,etc and if theres queues at checkout I bet people were well spaced out as opposed to fighting for room in toilets,bars,stands,food outlets at chelt, as a small example at chelt 8 hrs of continually queuing at cah points ,imagine the fingers hands around them terminals |

I won't put anything political, not much point just that virus would have arrived whoever was in charge of the country and will spread whatever they do. Yes lots of people will die, but everyone will eventually, no one escapes that fact. Enjoy your life whilst you're alive, worry about it afterwards imo!

The two biggest certainties in life are taxes and death. However, the latter unlike the former could be managed eg premature death, by what we do (profession); eat (diet); action we take in a crisis (behaviour); etc.
And, the present scenario is one that we have a say in. Practise sense and sensibility. |

At 75 and reasonably healthy, I am quite able to be rational about all of this. The country will greatly benefit from the early death of thousands of morbidly sick patients. It will reduce the strain on hospitals, care homes and the Government will have to pay less pensions. If that includes me then so be it. Italy has already decided to remove heath care from very sick people over the age of 80. Makes sense to me and my family will get a nice legacy if I go. Does it really matter if I die at 75 or 80? Just like in war time, Politicians have to choose the lesser of 2 evils and sacrifice those with the lowest value.

Some 70/75 are significantly more healthy and fitter that some of the whipper-snappers whose diets are fast food. mobile pones and compuetr games.
I think Matt Hancock was the Minister who cocked-up on fobt capitulating to the then Chancellor Hammond resulting in the resignation of one of his senior sports minsters Tracey Crouch. |

I think it's relatively easy for most us not facing either our own or a family/ friend's imminent death to be quite nonchalant about it but my dad died 6 months ago after a long illness and spent most of his final days worried about what his death would be like

Well yes,but I am just short of 70 and have coronary artery disease. I'm managing the essentials,but I live on my own and it's not easy at times. Don't think I'm going to get the op in the foreseeable future. Even if they are in a position to offer it me,I'm not sure I would risk it as I presumably might need oxygen at some point and I obviously have a better chance of catching IT in hospital. However I'm not prepared to lose my sense of humour.

Horse racing fixtures in Britain could take place behind closed doors within 48 hours, says the chief of Arena Racing, owners of 16 tracks. Martin Cruddace believes restrictions prompted by the coronavirus pandemic could last until the end of June. "We are outliers with other parts of the racing world, but I think we should be prepared for an imminent change," Cruddace told Sky Sports Racing. "My own personal view is that could be within the next 48 hours." Racing in England has continued after the Cheltenham Festival, with a crowd of 8,400 at Uttoxeter on Saturday for the Midlands Grand National. Cruddace called for additional aid to allow some fixtures that would otherwise be "financially unviable" to go ahead without income from paying spectators. For example, he said staging the All-Weather Championships Finals day at Lingfield on Good Friday behind closed doors would mean his company missed out on between £500,000 to £600,000. Arena's other tracks include Chepstow, Doncaster and Sedgefield. "Where we are right now is we're following the current government advice, but I think it's safe to say that's very likely to change imminently. It's important we are - and we are - prepared for what's coming our way," said Cruddace. "The only thing we can do as a responsible company and, dare I say it, an industry, is to follow the government's advice. We're planning, worst-case scenario, end of June. It is absolutely possible we won't race again in front of a crowd until the end of June. If it happens before then, great." |

The situation in the US is a complete mess. Of the tracks covered at the moment by Bf,Aqueduct is going on behind closed doors,whilst Turf Paradise seems to have unilaterally abandoned racing for the rest of its season. In Pennsylvania Parx is off but Penn National continues. Meanwhile the state of Maryland appears to have banned racing altogether,putting the Preakness in grave danger.
In GB of course racing went ahead in a just about recognisable form during both warss. You'll find Derby winners during the war years,albeit at Newmarket whilst you won't find any football or cricket champions,any Wimbledon or Open winners. Of course you couldn't catch fascism from mingling,or possibly racehorse owners had buit up immunity. |
