It would be bizarre if they cancelled big events, but let daily racing carry on.  So either we get a total shutdown of events where a lot of people gather or nothing imo eg concerts football cinemas

Agree Dave can only be one or the other but got to be better 2/5 shots than this. If you look at pictures of Milan on Friday then a Ghost town 5 days later just shows how fast this virus can spread. Next 3-5 days will tell us I think but the Germans already convinced an Epidemic cannot be stopped Cry. They not wrong on alot of things hope this is one.

I'd rather go to Cheltenham than go see a movie.

That said all Chinese takeaways are off the list.

How many Chinese takeaway and restaurant workers residing in the UK went to China for their new year's celebrations? No chance the government have a figure.

Total hysteria.

27 people in the UK die from flu every day.

Only about 1 in 100 die from this coronavirus mostly with pre-existing conditions.
By:
hello :-)
When: 27 Feb 20 13:42
i agree wesdag

hysteria caused by what could follow i guess , the unknown added to no vaccine available

no one seen Italy coming tbh before that it was thought to have peaked in asia

That said, you can get a flu jab..
By:
Wesdag
When: 27 Feb 20 13:44
flu jab is no guarantee of not getting flu

80% of those that get this coronavirus require no treatment
By:
howard
When: 27 Feb 20 13:44
Any idea how many of the 27 have had a flu jab ?

Prudence is a virtue at this particular time. But, I think Chinese takeaways are ok as usually it's a family concern. It's the restaurants where the cooks and kitchen helpers could be of concern. If unsure ask to look at the kitchen and those cooking the food.

I think I'd be more worried in supermarkets as anyone who's been abroad could be a carrier of the Coronavirus eg holiday in France and Italy, and not just orientals.

I think comparing flu and coronavirus is wrong as the former is a common and probably a yearly occurrence and a lot more is known about it unlike the latter originally thought to have been caused by the handling and transporting of wild life not of general consumption eg bats, etc.

Given the deaths in China or the one's we hear about.....

I'd rather have the flu.

If the situation does not get any better it's prudent to skip Cheltenham, I firmly believe, as the possible consequences outweigh the enjoyment many folds.

I'd get a takeaway without hesitation esp it's a family concern and your local. Also, I think the takeaways would rather you frequent and might even give you a bigger portion than normal. It's their livelihood and your support is vital at this time.

if we're skipping Cheltenham then the country will be near meltdown and racing is the least of your worries

2m people use the tube everyday

are we going to shut that down?
By:
hello :-)
When: 27 Feb 20 14:05
the effects are already in place you just cant yet see them

produce from effected countries shunned , tourism outlets well down in feb , some having drops they havnt seen before in numbers , flights and hotels that would normally be booked out have many spaces in month ahead

lot of buiseness are pretty worried about year ahead , many new ones in first year could be finished before they start

fingers crossed we seen the worst of it in Europe and it regresses then normality will return
By:

When: 27 Feb 20 14:06
The proviso is if present situation does not get any better but worse. If so, the tube could run less frequently or shutdown totally  - the tube is a necessity to get to work unlike the Cheltenham Festival. But, at the moment it's going ahead and not a major concern.

I believe in Japan horse racing is continuing, but without racegoers.

so you're prepared to let people spread this virus so long as they're commuting?
By:

the whole response & suggested actions to prevent further infections is illogical & hysterical

id certainly take me chances @ Cheltenham in the wide open spaces compared with being shoved underground on the tube
By:

When: 27 Feb 20 14:19
any measure that prevents further spread is imo wise
By:
Wesdag
When: 27 Feb 20 14:22
the tube is packed full with people who've been in the countries where there has been a major epidemic, travelling like sardines but yet cancelling Cheltenham will help
By:
hello :-)
When: 27 Feb 20 14:32
i don't think one isolated event is a worry tbh no

if cases increase next few days measures will need to i go far deeper tbh , travel being the focus

all depends on if its peaked in Europe or it increases and who knows at mo

i looked at booking a hotel for end of next month earlier today , every day in month was available never seen that in march before esp in a major city and more so given tourism boom of recent years and prices unusually low

Totally outside cheltenams hands if clusters start appearing like Italy them other sports will not happen and Cheltenham will have no choice i remember 2001 cheltenham cancelled so anythings possible, its getting worse 2 more got it today if that is regular then they have no choice, hope not but totally down to luck its my biggest pay week of the whole year so we need it on

Lot more chance of it spreading at work places,so are they going to stop people working. They can only stop places of work closing for a short time, how do they know that workers are not carrying it when they open back up.Cheltenham being on will not make any difference to the spread of the virus,it cannot be contained. For all we know we could pick it up by just popping into a shop, the virus will have to take its course, like the ones we had in the past.Yes a few people will die, but most of those could have died with the normal Flu virus as they are vulnerable people.

probably ribero, all hype whipped up by the media

5 people will be killed on the roads today - should we ban all road transport?
By:

What you have to consider is it's still spreading, no cure and our own health secretary has been quoted as saying he wouldn't go near these 'low risk' areas.

Hi Foxy am sorely temped but as obviously want it to be on can't be bothered getting involved, obviously with this being a racing forum it was obviously going to provoke plenty of discussion and always going to be plenty of doom mongers on here however as the excellent Ritchie Forristal says today this is Social media at its worst.
