Jumping Hill was owned by an American who also had the top class juvenile J O Tobin in the same year (1976). Noel Murless retired at the end of the season and both horses were moved to the States.

Mr Murless's last Royal Ascot winner. Colours not really that similar to Joel's as the big white yoke made them looked like halved black and white. Oh! and the sleeves were white, Oh and the cap was red not scarlet. Onlooker, what is up with your precision these days Hope you are well.

Best horse ever to run in Jim Joel's black and red colours was ROYAL PALACE. Trained by the master Noel Murless, and ridden by the great Australian George Moore, who was only in the country for a year or so. Rumour had it at the time that ex-Murless jockey Lester Piggot's was responsible for him being forced to abandon England and return to his homeland. Not after winning almost every important race whilst he was here.

Yes, but there were conspiracy theories put forward that Piggot's was seething after losing the job with Murless, and the subsequent amazing success of Moore. Many classic winners and big race successes put Piggot's nose out of joint , and I well remember the furore that followed.Nothing ever came to light, but Moore went back to Australia despite being on the crest of a wave. Would not have gone back for petty reasons, would he? Remains a mystery.

Rothman my recollection is that Lester lost his job with Murless through refusing to ride a Murless horse in the Oaks preferring Vincent O'Bs Valoris which duly won.Thereafter Lester went freelance and had the pick of V o'B's classic runners like Sir Ivor,Nijinski , Roberto and many more. It was such a long time ago so my memory may not be accurate but I recall Moore's family were threatened which accelerated his departure.
Talking about Royal Palace I was at Sandown the day he won the Eclpse in 1968 ;one of the greatest races I 've ever seen.

Posy. That is my recollection too. I think Lester was on a retainer with Murless who expected him to ride Varinia in the Oaks but as you say he chose to ride Valoris. I think O'Brien already had plans for Lester and was reportedly very impressed with the way Lester handled the highly strung Valoris - she got a bit agitated and Lester walked her the last quarter mile to the start.

....Piggott's first ride for O'Brien was a winner – the great mare Gladness in the 1958 Gold Cup. According to O'Brien's official biography, written by his wife Jacqueline, Piggott complained about the lengthy instructions the trainer had given him. Later that season Piggott rode Gladness in the Ebor, cantering in by six lengths under the burden of 9st 7lb. It was an auspicious beginning, yet eight years passed before the two geniuses began to work together on a regular basis.
The catalyst for their alliance was a filly named Valoris, who won the 1966 Oaks with Piggott in the saddle. At the time Piggott was retained by Sir Noel Murless and was expected to ride his Varinia in the Classic, but Piggott was and was always the acknowledged master of redrawing riding arrangements to suit himself and he insisted on riding Valoris at Epsom. Varinia finished third; Murless fumed; Piggott laconically announced he would now ride as a freelance.

Vincent and Lester were both in the genius category when it came to horses . Think they both knew that , Vincent was prepared to put up with some of Lester attitude because he knew that Lester was the best in the world . Stable staff were under instructions not to let Lester near their younger horses in case he was formulating plans . Vincent seldom won with a bigger priced stable companion unlike successor .
Nobody similar to either these days , particularly if you were looking for something to lump on . Stable jockeys picking wrong uns commonplace .
