why should bookmakers pay for standing up on horse racing tracks

Same reason shops pay rates on the high street.

if they weren't making enough money they wouldn't turn up

admittedly they do need some help, given how competative things are these days. I've placed probably 2 on course bets in the last decade, how times have changed

Back in the day, the government introduced a compulsory 10p /£ Off Course Betting Tax,and I for one went racing daily to avoid this penalty.
This would be the only way to boost on-course attendance/betting turnover, but is an unlikely option.

On course bookmaker days are probably numbered under the present conditions.

Once of a day our bookmaking firm would never consider a day off wherever we had a pitch between March right through to October.And even the winter months would be out every Saturday.Last year I worked only 39 days racing and this year not even going to do that many.Its a sad reflection now with high expenses and low turnover sometimes I feel I'm only going for nostalgia.

It doesn't stop people going racing there.

French tracks are deserted other than arc day and French derby day can’t comment on that nonsense in America.

Not sure if you can bet into the Pools off-course in US , so no option if you want a bet.
The tracks are mostly open even on non-race days to accommodate the Slot punters and betting into the other track pools, which accounts for
the generous prize money.
In France, they have shops where you can bet into the pari-mutuel so no need to attend, and they too have generous prize money.

Morning Foxy,while I understand beatherder's view we all know the market for good pitches has never been stronger,a pitch at Hamilton going for 126k and Market rasen 86k would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
There is only 1 solution which will never happen is to stop us hedging into the exchanges.
I've taken very good money the last 2 days in admittedly good pitches,i guess I will have hedged over 4k back over the 2 days,that should be circulating in the ring but hey ho.

dr.atkins, Belle Vue bookmakers pay the track to stand on a Saturday night. At the BAGS meetings there is no payment either way. Some greyhound tracks pay their bookmakers i believe for BAGS meetings, but to say greyhound bookmakers get paid between 750 & 1200 pounds a week simply isn't true in every case.

Lol dr fair question I know on arc trials day which is probably there 3rd biggest day longchamp is almost empty nearly as many from the UK as Paris,also the jumping at autiel is very poorly supported.perhaps the summer festival at deauville gets a decent crowd but most are there for the evening entertainment.

the question should be why are punters paying so much to go racing?....cheaper entrance = greater attendance = better turnover for bookmakers..(who just hedge back on here anyway) who  will cover their costs in any event

Black knight the average cost for a bookmaker to bet at kempton on Boxing Day will be north of £500 by just backing on here how do you think they cover those cost before getting anything for themselves

On course bookmakers failed to move with the times, to offer anything different that might increase their trade. Any of them hand out any presents a la Barry Dennis and his Christmas puddings?

foxy if the bookmakers cant recoup the cost then they wouldnt do it would they. ...unless they are prepared to take a view and not hedge......that said the costs are to high i do agree....the multiple is way too high....should it be a percentage of profit on the day...though not sure how to manage /police that

your first point about the cost for punters black night has a huge effect on the bookmakers costs,£40 kempton tatts 6 races on boxing day and £15 haydock silver are two examples where the cost is simply to much,however whilst racecourses are getting money to easily nothing will change,regarding percentage from profit well that would be interesting to say the least.

Would have to agree a load of bent dross.

But a fantastic day out.

Not so much bent, just smallish field with half of the runners having absolute no chance, their nearly all bad horses [ they would not be there if they were any good]. The locals all know what cannot win so the race may have 7/8 runners but only 3/4 have any chance of winning, therefore the prices are made around those 3/4 ..

It’s going back to the simple point, why would bookmakers attend if they made nowt, simple logisictcs of supply and demand.

The way I see it is people playing for commission only should be able to earn minimum wage for the day, it really has very little skill it’s simple maths.

Bookmakers that take a stance should be rewarded accordingly if they have stuck their neck out and the horse in question is turned over.

I was at Ripon a couple of months back and the bookies might get a little more custom if they weren’t  completely miserable.

It would take very little to pay the 2 pound each way public out with a smile.

And it works the other way round aswell, if I’m having a ton at 2/1, why would I pay commission when I can check betfair and only lump on when the price is 3.0 or below and they can pay it for me, play the commission agents at their own game.

sorry sparrow, yes i looked . rarely bother with the exchange but this was a bit much [ the kirby team ..they bet at least 10k in total at 100/30 ]..i asked for 200 at 4.5 [ three times ] and got matched before it shortened. won by a fence....lost over 5k on the race , maybe i should work at burger king pressing a few buttons

On the flip side you deserve lots of credit in this day and age.

Personally I think the game stinks more than ever.

A very tough job and deserve lots of respect if your taking risks like that.
