That was seriously embarrassing from Moore. Only appalling riding could have got that beaten.

Couldn't get his hands sorted out inside the final furlong.
Report bilbobaggins • September 7, 2018 1:38 PM BST
Didn't use his whip till 150 yards out then swaps hands twice in the last 100 yards.
Report granitjack • September 7, 2018 1:48 PM BST
Took him an age to draw his whip in the first place...stronger jockey won the race.
Report Whistlejacket • September 7, 2018 2:04 PM BST
He is NOT the "best jockey" in the world and the sooner myopic commentators stop saying that and save themselves the embarrassment the better.  Where is the empirical evidence that supports the claim?

He is simply a very good jockey.  That is undeniable.
Report wondersobright • September 7, 2018 2:06 PM BST
might have been (certainly top 3) a few years ago
but @ 34 (35 later in sept) he is firmly on the wrong side of the ageing curve for jockeys
Report wondersobright • September 7, 2018 2:08 PM BST
he's ridden in lower grade races with a couldn't give a flying fck attitude for years
Report granitjack • September 7, 2018 2:14 PM BST

Report sparrow • September 7, 2018 2:16 PM BST

wondersobright,
I agree with your view wholeheartedly.  I have come to the conclusion for a while now, that given the price his mounts invariably go off at, it has become quite risky backing Moore's mount on midweek cards (if he is ever there) He seem to ride a significant number of races with abject disinterest.  One gets the feeling he simply can't be asked to be there.

ryan's below par this season i agree. could be anything. personal problems etc. But a quick lok at wiki will tell you ryan has won more g1s in france than sds has ridden anywhere, uk included combined.
Report acey deucy • September 7, 2018 2:50 PM BST
I still think he is one of the greatest.
Report bilbobaggins • September 7, 2018 2:51 PM BST
That's because nobody gives SDS any G1 rides. He would have won on all of Moore's and some of the ones he lost.
Report TheFear • September 7, 2018 2:53 PM BST
it's a bit like football bilbo, if you're the best you get to play for barca and real madrid. You cant play for leicester and say yeah but if i was in barca's team i'd be top scorer :/

its not all bad news if moore is considered the best or one of the best ,your probably at little if any disadvantage betting agaimnst him and in most cases getting a premium for doing so
Report wondersobright • September 7, 2018 3:01 PM BST
with jockeys, to judge their ability accurately you simply have to discount properly for the horses they are riding

otherwise its pointless imo

jockey riding top horses does not mean top jockey imo, its more that the jockey has convinced enough important people that he/she is a top jockey
Report bilbobaggins • September 7, 2018 3:03 PM BST
I'm not doubting that he used to be very good but the key words are 'used to be'.

Not sure you're comparing like with like there, Fear.

take Seamus Heffernan for example, away from O'Brien, he's a low % journeyman jockey (imo), can often be spotted out the back of the telly, shuffling along, riding for the likes of Denis Hogan, but funnily enough, give him chances on them O'Brien bluebloods and suddenly he's a top jock, getting all the plaudits going.
Report TheFear • September 7, 2018 3:04 PM BST
you're writing him offon  one season. for all we know he might be arguing with his missus everynight. still the best on his day imo. although i agree the everyday stuff is not for him.

I backed Austrian school the other day and wasn't that happy to see moore replace mcdonmald, if you,d have backed a horse in the past and any of mercer, piggot, eddery, carson, frankie, fallon etc had come in for the ride you,d have been doing cartwheels down the street
Report TheFear • September 7, 2018 3:05 PM BST
fair point george. Some owners and trainers prefer a lesser jock who's on the 'team'. same with gosden and havlin.
Report bilbobaggins • September 7, 2018 3:05 PM BST
I'll admit I backed him in the first two races at Ascot and I don't think I'm exaggerating to say he should (and another better jockey would) have won on both. No doubt Sextant will win and Lydia Hislop et al will be eulogising again.

Best way to imtimidate your own mount. Squeeze it up on the rail. And just to showcase your skills throw your whip away.

evidence of this please

and define "at their best"
(won't accept riding more winners or better horses/more group winners as evidence of them being "at their best"
as this often happens as jockeys get older, perceived trust in them is higher by trainers, which is a phenomenon that masks the ageing curve

He has an off day every day? When did he last have a good one? Doyle and SDS are in a different league to that guy. Can’t see him keeping that job at Ballydoyle much longer....Donaccha is better than him and even Seamie can’t be far off now!

That is a hard thing to quantify womder.

Hughes, Crowley, SDS, Cauthen, Fallon, Roberts, all won their jockeys championship the wrong side of 34 and were argueably at their best.

Frankie and Eddery and Piggott where all better jockeys over 34 imho.

I am not sure you see any decline until 40 at least
Report wondersobright • September 7, 2018 5:17 PM BST
yep I wasn't suggesting it was easy to quantify

but jockeys championship (with v few exceptions) are pretty much decided by who has the highest number of expected winners in a ssn
that's all they are despite what some people will have you believe
Report wondersobright • September 7, 2018 5:21 PM BST
anything like the whitley figures or winners v expectation figures are a reasonable attempt at discounting for opportunity imo
not perfect but show me a method that is

if you plot the ages of jockeys who are in the top 20 (on these figs) then you won't see many the wrong side of 30
particularly over jumps when injuries have kicked in
Report wondersobright • September 7, 2018 5:21 PM BST
