timeforms comments

they really cant have been very many if any performances of this calibre at this track in its history.

whilst not doubting what they say is there any racing historians on here who could come up with a better one ?

i realise les arcs won at cartmel before he won a july cup but the statement was regarding performances at cartmel.

Just what I was gonna post onlooker.  The trouble is that Wells De Lune has beaten virtually nothing in its last two outings.  I'll be a layer.

Wells De Lune - Now Officially Rated 145 - foxy

That would put it middle of the weights in a Cheltenham Festival Handicap Chase - on 11 st 0 lbs - when the top-weight is on 157 - that 157 usually being around a top-weight's mark.

foxy  -  Regarding the classiest horse to run/win at Cartmel

That may well have come in the past 10 years, when Prize-Money, and class of races, has improved dramatically.
---------------

However - here are some interesting runners from earlier years ...

1850 - One meeting only - A Hurdle race, and two Flat races.

1861 - First two-day meeting

1862 - A record crowd attend a poor day's racing
The Westmorland Gazette describes the meeting as, "miserable in the extreme," and, "a sham."

1876 - Police arrest 6 Card Sharps

1881 - Spectators charged for first time to enter the course - Revenue equals £90 (declared  Happy )

1882 - Same jockey rides 4 winners - all at 1/3 FAV

1884 - Future Grand National Winner OLD JOE is a winner

1885 - St Bridget wins 2 races - repeated the following year, and by many others, subsequently - Two other horses run 3 times

1897 - Dead-Heat in the main race, the Tradesmen's Plate - Sillybody wins the RUN-OFF

1900 - Another Dead-Heat - followed by a RUN-OFF  SadHappy

1901 - The Watcher wins the Selling Hurdle - and then runs again in the NEXT race, a Steeplechase - which he also WINS.

1923 - The North Lancashire Hunter Chase is won by Cheltenham Foxhunters'  winner Fairy Hill.
FARIRAY, winner  of the valuable Jubilee Hurdle at Manchester, wins at 1/4 FAV, carrying 12st 7lb with the runner-up on 10st.

1926 - Liverpool Foxhunters' winner Upton Lad wins
First additional Autumn meeting is a flop as it clashes with the All Blacks Rugby team playing at nearby Barrow

1935 - WILTSHIRE trainer J L Hall saddles 2 winners

1947 - Whit Monday meeting becomes the second day of a new  two-day Bank Holiday weekend meeting. Many horses run on both days.

1956 - WYNBURGH - subsequently 2nd in 3 Grand Nationals - wins by a Distance.

1959 - Happy Morn wins the North Lonsdale Hunters Chase for the 4th time - But is then Disqualified, and placed 3rd. She won 25 Hunter Chases in all.

1962 - Creggmore Boy finishes 4th in the Furness Selling Handicap Chase, a race he had won before.
Aged 22 - he was the oldest horse to run in Britain

The 8 runners in the Selling Chase had run 585 times - winning 69 races between them.
Creggmore Boy was owned and trained and ridden by members of the (Eric) Cousins family in Cheshire.

1973 - 14-year-old Self Raising wins on both days.

1978 - Michael Dickinson suffers career-ending injury - a ruptured liver - when Buck Me Off slips up.

1980 - HALLO DANDY - future Grand National Winner - wins Burlington Slate Handicap Chase - FLASHY BOY finishes last

1984 - Tudor Bob wins for the 4th time in a year at Cartmel (including a Walk-Over)
August Bank Holiday Monday meeting is run on Hard ground - with just 18 runners in 5 races,  and a walk-over.

DEEP MYSTERY wins for the 7th time, in just 8 outings, at Cartmel

1986 - Gordon W Richards saddles 6 Winners from 7 runners, over two days

1988 - Sir Badswoth wins for the third time

1993 - DEB'S BALL wins for the 5th time, from 7 Cartmel outings, for Dudley Moffatt - She won 15 races, at all course.

Prophetically named Better Times Ahead Wins the Novice Chase

1996 - YOUNG KENNY - to become a top-class Chaser - wins Amateur Riders' Novice Hurdle

1999 - BETTER TIMES AHEAD wins for the second time in the year, and 5th time at Cartmel, breaking his own Course Record

2004 - Flahive's First wins for the 6th time at Cartmel

About 25 years ago, Greenheart and Clever Folly had a dust up over 2 miles on hard ground. They were rated 143 and 142, and were giving 2 stone to their 2 rivals, though it should have been 4 stone. Greenheart always went off in front, but Clever Folly caught him at the last and beat him 12 lengths. The handicapper put him up 3. He was 12yo.
Report foxy • September 4, 2018 8:35 PM BST

As I posted earlier - foxy  ...

'Regarding the classiest horse to run/win at Cartmel

-----------

Countrywide Flame came under that umbrella, as it was only 6 years ago

My posted participants only went up to 2004 - However - ged has kindly taken up the baton for more recent runners.
