That would put it middle of the weights in a Cheltenham Festival Handicap Chase - on 11 st 0 lbs - when the top-weight is on 157 - that 157 usually being around a top-weight's mark. |

That may well have come in the past 10 years, when Prize-Money, and class of races, has improved dramatically. --------------- However - here are some interesting runners from earlier years ... 1850 - One meeting only - A Hurdle race, and two Flat races. 1861 - First two-day meeting 1862 - A record crowd attend a poor day's racing The Westmorland Gazette describes the meeting as, "miserable in the extreme," and, "a sham." 1876 - Police arrest 6 Card Sharps 1881 - Spectators charged for first time to enter the course - Revenue equals £90 (declared )1882 - Same jockey rides 4 winners - all at 1/3 FAV 1884 - Future Grand National Winner OLD JOE is a winner 1885 - St Bridget wins 2 races - repeated the following year, and by many others, subsequently - Two other horses run 3 times 1897 - Dead-Heat in the main race, the Tradesmen's Plate - Sillybody wins the RUN-OFF 1900 - Another Dead-Heat - followed by a RUN-OFF ![]() ![]() 1901 - The Watcher wins the Selling Hurdle - and then runs again in the NEXT race, a Steeplechase - which he also WINS. 1923 - The North Lancashire Hunter Chase is won by Cheltenham Foxhunters' winner Fairy Hill. FARIRAY, winner of the valuable Jubilee Hurdle at Manchester, wins at 1/4 FAV, carrying 12st 7lb with the runner-up on 10st. 1926 - Liverpool Foxhunters' winner Upton Lad wins First additional Autumn meeting is a flop as it clashes with the All Blacks Rugby team playing at nearby Barrow 1935 - WILTSHIRE trainer J L Hall saddles 2 winners 1947 - Whit Monday meeting becomes the second day of a new two-day Bank Holiday weekend meeting. Many horses run on both days. 1956 - WYNBURGH - subsequently 2nd in 3 Grand Nationals - wins by a Distance. 1959 - Happy Morn wins the North Lonsdale Hunters Chase for the 4th time - But is then Disqualified, and placed 3rd. She won 25 Hunter Chases in all. 1962 - Creggmore Boy finishes 4th in the Furness Selling Handicap Chase, a race he had won before. Aged 22 - he was the oldest horse to run in Britain The 8 runners in the Selling Chase had run 585 times - winning 69 races between them. Creggmore Boy was owned and trained and ridden by members of the (Eric) Cousins family in Cheshire. 1973 - 14-year-old Self Raising wins on both days. 1978 - Michael Dickinson suffers career-ending injury - a ruptured liver - when Buck Me Off slips up. 1980 - HALLO DANDY - future Grand National Winner - wins Burlington Slate Handicap Chase - FLASHY BOY finishes last 1984 - Tudor Bob wins for the 4th time in a year at Cartmel (including a Walk-Over) August Bank Holiday Monday meeting is run on Hard ground - with just 18 runners in 5 races, and a walk-over. DEEP MYSTERY wins for the 7th time, in just 8 outings, at Cartmel 1986 - Gordon W Richards saddles 6 Winners from 7 runners, over two days 1988 - Sir Badswoth wins for the third time 1993 - DEB'S BALL wins for the 5th time, from 7 Cartmel outings, for Dudley Moffatt - She won 15 races, at all course. Prophetically named Better Times Ahead Wins the Novice Chase 1996 - YOUNG KENNY - to become a top-class Chaser - wins Amateur Riders' Novice Hurdle 1999 - BETTER TIMES AHEAD wins for the second time in the year, and 5th time at Cartmel, breaking his own Course Record 2004 - Flahive's First wins for the 6th time at Cartmel |

countrywide flame he beat blake dean 28 lengths as it happens it wasnt his hurdles debut he had already won at rasen with blake dean 20 lengths back in 4th.

countrywide flame was 2nd to rock on ruby in the race at doncaster put on by the bha due to a bad winter it was free entry and a good national hunt crowd turned up sadly darlan a horse full of promise took a fatal fall at the last.

Hammersly Lake won off 153 there a couple of months ago, and was put up to 159.

About 25 years ago, Greenheart and Clever Folly had a dust up over 2 miles on hard ground. They were rated 143 and 142, and were giving 2 stone to their 2 rivals, though it should have been 4 stone. Greenheart always went off in front, but Clever Folly caught him at the last and beat him 12 lengths. The handicapper put him up 3. He was 12yo.

as it happens onlooker jq had another entered that year for the triumph hurdle i had seen it win at catterick cant remember its name but was impressed so had a few quid on that instead anti post for the triumph.

clever folly as an 11yo beat the decent another coral at cheltenham the old october meeting finished of winning his last race at perth at the young age of 15.
