Thommo used to love the old chaser "Sir Rembradt"
In every pre-race commentary he used to say... "Looked a picture" and "Should be in the frame" ![]() |

Another one of my favourites was Vincent, named after van Gogh, who I think ran in the famous Daniel Prenn colours, Black, Black and Green hooped sleeves, Green cap.
and of course there was Gainsborough who won the Triple Crown |

Johannes Vermeer trained by Aidan O`Brien.

Henry Candy had a horse called Jan Ekels, that I remember backing in nurseries years ago, and there was a sprinter called Franz Hals in the 60s, though I can't recall who trained it. More recently there's been a Frans Hals, though he was low grade.

Stubbs II was a good hurdler. He carried 11-7 in what was probably the best ever running of the Schweppes Hurdle in 1968, won by Persian War with 11-13.
Stubbs was 8th in the weights in a field of 34 declared runners. Sempervivum was top weight with 12-2. Other runners in the race included Major Rose, Hill House, Even Keel, Spanish Steps, Celtic Gold, Supermaster, Indamelia and Specify. |
|
By:
...he nearly came down at the 4th last in that Schweppes, and did well to finish 4th behind Persian War, Major Rose and Sempervivum.
|
|
By:
...a fortnight before that Schweppes, Stubbs had beaten Persian War a neck at Kempton in a 27-runner handicap in receipt of 7 lbs. Persian War was 1 lb better off at Newbury.
|
|
By:
Some great stalwarts in that Schweppes field ged. Was Major Rose owned by Des O`Connor at some time?
|
|
By:
Don't think so, mac. Major Rose was one of 4 Cesarewitch winners that Price trained; another was Utrillo, named after a French painter, who was actually born in Montmartre.
Major Rose was twice placed in Champion Hurdles; Sempervivum once so. Kirriemuir won one, and was 3rd in one. Celtic Gold was the best hurdler WA Stephenson ever trained. Des O'Connor owned Bermondsey, who won over hurdles and fences for him I think. It ran in Charlottown's Derby as a 3yo, but for a different owner. |
|
By:
...I left out Kirriemuir from the that Schweppes field - also Black Justice, who was a top class hurdler, set to carry a pound more than Persian War. He was also placed in a Champion Hurdle (he finished 5th in that Schweppes, and was hampered when Stubbs blundered at the 4th last).
