First Saturday in May means one thing to racing fans worldwide - it's KENTUCKY DERBY DAY. Can Mendelssohn make history and land the Run For The Roses?
I hope Aidan is successful in this brave attempt to land arguably the toughest thoroughbred race in the world and go one better than the ever popular Clive Brittain.
As Irvin S Cobb famously said, "Until you go to Kentucky and see the Derby with your own eyes, you ain't never been nowhere and ain't never seen nothing"!
Just prefer his experience, class and tactical speed over the unproven potential of Justify and Mendelssohn.
He’s just a tougher horse than those two and quited like his manoeuvrability and tactical speed in both his Gulfstream wins.
Put it this way...while the other two could be superstars I just feel that right now today Audible will be able answer all the questions and challenges a Kentucky Derby can through up.

Menelssohn for me, broke course record at Meydan where there has been countless top horses putting their best efforts in. Ryan has 2 lengths on any jockey if he wants to really win and who doesn't want to land the Kentucky. Typical of O'brien wanting the big double on the day, he's just won the 2000 Guineas.

Saw that My Boy Jack’s prices crashed Stateside..now 5-1 from 30-1.
UK bookies haven’t picked up on this yet.
...
Had a small bet on Solomini as well...looks the spitting image of his old man. Plan all along was to drop him out and make 1 run so stall 17 isn’t bad. More than happy to have Flavien Prat on board. Top class jockey.

The tapeta track at Meydan was replaced by dirt about 3 years ago, so breaking the track record there isn't significant. It's impacted by weather and humidity, and also how often it's harrowed and levelled. Favours 'speed' runners and the day Mendelssohn won, the track was riding very fast, in fact, of the 8 races, 6 were won in better than standard times.
RM stole it from the front that day, and although it looked visually impressive (and it was) he was gifted the race, that was not a particularly strong field. It will not be a case of deja vu this evening (it will probably hose up now i've stated that )
As for RM being 2 lengths better than any other jockey, that's nonsense, great though he is.

tried to add some dough to daq, but paypal asked for a card to be registered from the same country ???, so did not bother with that. debit card was then not accepted. Used it earlier & several pounds in my account, so will not be using that site in a hurry. Was not looking forward to the id rigmarole, having suffered that with the sun mob earlier. Funny how it's no questions asked with depositing! Thanks anyway elise!

It will be a special achievement if OBrien and Moore wins the big one - O Brien is the worlds best Trainer ...but this would be really special if he could pull it off and be possibly one of his most biggest achievements out of all the races he has won.
Im going to chuck a few quid ew on Somomini 33/1 & Enticed 40/1

Smarkets is the place to be if you want to lay Mendelssohn - you can currently lay Mendelssohn for £1,592 at 6.0, and there is £315 available to back at 5.90
For comparison, on daq you can lay £109 at 6.2 and back for £63 at 5.8
Daq has £10,224 matched in total on the race, Smarkets has £57,110 traded in total.

Horrible conditions to run your top race in. Bookmakers must be rubbing their hands as race now akin to a lottery.
Terrible start for Moore. Never sighted on his first mount (on turf) and will probably need a search party for Seahenge as the horse looks increasingly like a rogue with each run.

The last time i seen conditions like that George Washington was standing on 3 legs up to his hocks in muck.
Horrible and dreadful to watch racing like that.

Big Race, Big Occasion, Big Watch, but personally I couldn`t get seriously involved betting as when it comes to USA racing
but I`ve had a cheeky score on the unbeaten Magnum Moon despite it`s terrible draw.

Despite all that you have the cheek to start a thread and call it "The Official Kentucky Derby Thread"

If I had to back I would go for Audible, but it's a difficult race to ride at the best of times and if there is a rails bias it may well depend on which of about 7 or 8 horses gets out best.

Sparrow, I don't follow American racing on a daily basis and therefore know nothing about current form and horses, but I do know more about the history of this great race and all other major sporting events than most on here.
Someone had to start a thread, nowt cheeky about that.
I've been to the Kentucky Derby and See the horse in the photo next to my name, I saw it winning the triple crown, and not many can say that. Greatest horse ever, ok.

impossible123 06 May 18 00:01 Why did connections of Mendelssohn bother? Moore was hopeless (again)!
I'm sure months of planning didn't include tonights "conditions".

Role on Pimlico in a fortnight. Will be interesting to see how he does there. With the races coming up so quickly, it takes a real Champion to win the Triple Crown.

Poor old Ryan must have been praying to a higher authority than jesus as he was taking a hiding from either side in the early push for places......someone calling him "hopeless"??

I do not understand why Moore seems to allow himself to get his mount into a non-winning and awkward position (regularly) in America at the off eg Seventh Heaven, Happily and yesterday Mendelssohn just to name 3 I I can remember. He needs to be more alert and better prepared at the gate eg plan and anticipate better.

It looks like the only way that Mendleson could 'run a race' - let alone win - was by leading, as at Meydan.
Not saying it could have with such tactics - and immaterial to me, as I will not bet on American racing.
However - from that DRAW it obviously had NO chance of doing the above.
Furthermore - Mendleson was completely knocked sideways, TWICE inside the first furlong - in a real rough-house of a start - and then running on that sloppy sh!te surface was a complete 'no'no' for the horse.

Moore is too used to the British way of dawdling out of the gate. You can do that on turf in the US but not in a good-class field on dirt unless you're on a world-beater and Mendelssohn isn't Secretariat.

It was very difficult last night but I would say the above is a reasonable summary. He isn't very often on the front end over here so he doesn't get that much practice at forcing the pace.
Early days but given his mounts he hasn't made the greatest of starts to the season. Was it just a handicap winner at the Craven meeting?
