Alderbrook could probably have won more with different connections.

Remember a horse called Boss's Bank, same owner and trainer as Barton Bank. Won two bumpers and was sent off favourite for a novice hurdle but fell early on and was killed.

National Hunt

Red Brook.

Trained by Malcolm Jefferson.  Was always well liked at home and won it's bumper by 4 lengths on debut.  Followed that up with a hard earned win in it's next bumper.  Came out the following season with high hopes and trotted up on it's hurdling debut on horrible ground by a distance.  Was found to be injured after that run and never raced again.  In such a short space of time, we followed it in all 3 wins having had info from the yard.  Just a shame we never got to see how far it could go in the game.

Flat

Bint Allayl.

Beaten by the talented Pipalong on debut at York over 5f.  Came back and slammed Speedy James in the National Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths.  Then reversed placings with Pipalong in the Queen Mary at Ascot.  And then ran in the Lowther at York, steadied in behind, Kinane took a pull and then cruised through to lead a furlong out and pushed it our for an impressive win beating Wannabee Grand by 2 lengths.  Was already a star at the end of it's 2 year old career.  Could have been anything at 3 years but broke down on the gallops and had to be put down.  A sad day for racing and I laminated the front page of the RP the day they reported it had to be put down to put on my bedroom wall.  :-(

A two year old from last year, Godolphin's Silver Line, thought he was hugely impressive on his debut at Nottingham, and while expecting him to be a 'susperstar' might have been pushing it, let's just say I expected a couple of Group wins at the very least!

He did place in the Norfolk on his next start and was then 4th in the G2 July Stakes, but failed to win again, winding up rated 'only' 103.

He still holds an Irish Guineas entry, but he won't be going there cuz he's had the unkindest cut of all, but if the gelding op has made a man of him, there's still time for him to belatedly fulfil that early potential!

Editor's Note: Not sure he wants the ground on the quick side.

rogerthebutler: Excellent call on Crazy Horse. How the hell did even Lungo manage to get it beaten in its first two novices' hurdles?

The horse had everything - stamina, an unreal turn of foot and the ability to cruise clear. That day at the Grand National meeting when it won the 20f handicap hurdle easing down by 7l under top weight from 17 rivals it genuinely was a superstar.

Yet you then look at all the times it was a beaten favourite, or pulled up when A Dobbin got the ride, and you just wonder what might have been.

Maylane, trained by the late, great Alec Stewart.

When he beat Dushyantor at Epson, I was convinced untold riches lay ahead by following him.

Unfortunately, it very quickly went awry !!

Frankel. Found every weak race possible and was petrified to race beyond his own backyard. Sadly the most over-hyped horse in history.
