Apparently Geoff has been sending a few letters out recently to punters he considers won't be profitable for him and whose business he no longer wants. Mugs only apply.

Aberdonia, the guy is not even paying attention to the conversation around him. Either that, or his is indeed quite stupid. The conversation was about the merits win Gurkha's win in the French 2000 Guineas and Mr Banks was prattling on about the Dante! Think he will be better suited to Speakers Corner on a Sunday morning as opposed to proffering supposedly informed opinion on a racing programme.
Why does there have to be a bloody bookmaker on the programme anyway. Isn't that a duplication of what Tanya Stevenson is meant to be doing? |
|
By:
Quite an interesting question if you're reading Geoff. What effect do you think account closures/making it hard for people to get a bet on/winners not welcome will have on the long term future of the racing game?
|
|
By:
Unfortunately Whistlejacket, Tanya is not capable of partaking in any meaningful discussion, she has to resort to coming up with drivel like "only 2 out of the last 10 favs have won" or "9 out of the last 10 winners came from the first 3 in the betting". She came up with a good one when Air Force Blue bombed out in the Guineas, she had it down as a "good example of the perils of ante post betting".

Unlike the anonymous out of pocket posters on here. |
|
By:
Oldgit, why do you assume there has to be a correlation between a "poster" having a bet and holding an opinion?
I chose to cite Jamie Spencer as an example for instance, as I am sure most racing fans - in Britain at any rate - will agree he can be the most exasperating top flight jockey riding. One ride he can be sublime. The next ride can be a "what on earth is Jamie doing ride?" One dimensional as he often can be, I doubt if anyone would say Spencer is a bad, average or moderate jockey. On the subject of anonymity, i hope to God your parents didn't christen you "oldgit" but then I imagine the irony of your statement is completely lost on you. |

Well, he gave Walsh an uncomfortable time of it didn't he, so much so that Fitzy got his knickers in a twist live on air |

Sorry thought this was the thread giving out about his sammy jo quip ,
Having said that we are always giving out about pundits not giving an opinion and afraid of upsetting anyone, If he believes it and has the balls to say it fair play to him i say. The sport in general would be in a better place if more pundits spoke the truth. |

entertaining lads opinions divided here from the fair commentors- who whilst they may not agree- accept not everyone has to
Might I point out, to the mary Whitehouse types- television is to inform and entertain. In the inform part- amongs other comments I napped Garcia and told you AOB 'greatest horse I've ever trained' had no chance. As to the entertain part- well of course not everyone is going to laugh- but racing is replete to bursting with some of the most obsequious telly in modern sport- noone questions. AOB can remove Ballydoyle claiming his 'blood picture ' as unsatisfactory- and nobody bothers to question the obvious. But then ultimately these pundits end up out of work - because they're as dull as the producers who employ them. so yes, I say what i think, and it's with credit that channel 4 let it happen where other networks would wither. It doesn't mean producers on 4 agree with everything i say - far from it, but at least it offers a contra view- a debate, a disagreement perhaps. A laugh to some, to others an opportunity to criticise without thought from their anonymous profiles on here. One final point. I speak as I find- like my Father before me who made more fatuous remarks in the right spirit than many in gambling - he sent it up the establishment. What i do find is those that agree- say little, and those that disagree- call me a moron for disagreeing with their point of view I'll stand Levey's mounts because quite simply he's not a patch on the great jockeys. It doesn't mean the man falls out the saddle- but that i'm happy to oppose a jockey who averages 12% win rate to one nearer 25%. It's basic maths, and let's face it opinion. Don't batter opinion - embrace it - it's a hell of a dull world without controversy |
|
By:
Yep fair play geoff .
Hard to win sometimes , go on the show and say nothing and everyone says whats the point in him , Throw in one witty remark and the public are outraged and offended. If everyone was as outspoken as yourself then maybe your own profession mightnt get as easy a ride and the debate might begin. But thats another story, in the mean keep entertaining on the morning line buddy. |

Geoff - your 'statistics' are specious.
The way to correctly judge jocks is to calculate their performance against expected performance based on cumulative mount's odds. Personally I find you unwatchable on tv - you strike me as a 'Flash Harry' show off with little substance to your opinions - if I entered a pub to find you standing at the bar I would turn round and leave. |

I have watched the Morning Line on occasions recently and have enjoyed seeing Mr Banks get under the skin of the likes of Ruby and Fitzy who are 'insiders' within the industry.
The horse racing industry is an inert world where the people who work in it are immediately on the defensive if any 'outsider' dare have an opinion which could be critical of those within it. I remember when the Morning Line was 'fun viewing' with the likes of Big Mac, Francome et al expressing opinions without fear. Mac would criticise jockeys and bookmakers openly (of course he wasn't always right), but him and Francome weren't frightened to rock the boat. Currently the only presenters / pundits who are prepared to be critical are Chapman, Cunningham, Hislop and most recently Mellish. Boycie spoke his mind once and supposedly nearly lost his job. Chapman has allegedly been suspended for speaking out and Hislops spat with the 'green and golds' could have cost her. It's easy to criticise,, but, horseracing presenters and pundits have to put food on their table and they know if they upset the 'insiders' it could have repercussions for them. |

Well done sir for having the courage to respond and come on the forum to make your case.
I gave up watching the ML a long time ago as even then the programme was never really informative and only occasionally did one of the presenters (usually John Mc) put his head above the parapets to confront a contentious issue. I digress....reading what was said about Sammy Jo was actually rather funny and certainly quick witted. It appears it also made her giggle so cannot understand the po faced puritanical criticism you've been getting. We're not living in an Islamic state...yet. Regarding Levey am not aware of the context of the criticism;suffice to say looking at his statistics he's an average jockey with a S/R of 12% (slightly better than average)and an A/E of 0.91%. To be fair to him however his S/R has improved to 15.7% over the past year and his A/E improved to 1.03%. If he keeps going like this Whistlejacket the original poster is absolutely correct in his comments.Backing his mounts over the past 12 months would have produced a positive 2.5% ROI albeit at BSP...and that's another story ! |
|
By:
Do those who object to the Banks 'humour' never go to comedy clubs or watch modern comedians on TV?
|
|
By:
he's standard and that's why many will find him amusing
|
|
By:
It certainly would be nice to hear Geoff's opinion on the long term future of racing when nobody bar idiots and the fantasists who convince themselves they are winners can get a bet on.
I have no problem at all with him being outspoken, better than the splintered rear end brigade. |
|
By:
No Ekbalco - the price of a horse - ridden by Ryan Moore, will always be affected positively- even if he's now off the horse- it's therefore articicially low
As for whether you'd turn your back? I doubt that- I'm sure some of the people shaking my hand at the races for speaking out disagree with things i say on occasion. But they're not anonymous- therefore they remain human and polite I probably don't go to your pub anyway. Enjoy Simon Mapletoft |

I'm going to start the Banksie Fan Club. ITV should have already signed him up. Hot property.

Fair play for coming on. Yes we need panelists who are prepared to speak out and yes we need a bit of fun on the morning line. Only thing is I don't think that joke would have been made to a male jockey so like the rest of us you have to be careful of slipping into middle aged man syndrome and saying something inappropriate. An obvious example would be Ken Livingstone.
|
|
By:
Gosh what kind of a reaction would you get if you brought up Fatlads points , levy not getting its fair share because Bookies wont take a bet . There again it might be a little too much for your producer , thanks for the joke ,keep em coming.
