Jeebus, even more sh!te

Why do bookmakers advertise their prices, if they don't want people to have a bet at them?

Write that one down.

betting with a bookmaker when they're out of line

Don't be out of line.  Get your odds correct or stop whining when someone has a bet at the advertised odds.

Write that one down.

The great Geoff youre just like the rest of them but you talk more. If you dont want to lay a price dont offer that price - its simple. And in case youve forgotten you hold/have been granted a public licence so you should not be allowed to discriminate against some customers. Granted you are entitled to limit your exposure on a particular horse.

it's n exchange driven world- where bookmakers compee with the two quid offers on here. And exchanges are incredibly illiquid and fluid. That's a pure fact. If exchanges were that wonderful- I wouldn't be hearing from you about 'not getting on' - to those who label me not a bookie- I say why don't you moan when there's 50p on here to back a horse?

If you play the numbers - I don't need your business. You're not a punter= you're a player and all the head in the sand arguments simply don't persuade my firm you're the type of customer, win or lose, we want to service.

You cannot have your cake of exchange odds, then jump on bookmakers when the exchange price collapses and you don't get your trade placed to the stake you desire. If you're backing Dona Del Santos at the football the chances are you're numbers trading, rather than  a genuine punter.

Sure you can say 'don't advertise odds and do not lay them' - but we do. But we don't lay them to traders, can I be any clearer and we do know the difference. If it was the Derby today - you wouldn't be playing because they're focussed markets

It's unfair to label me as a gaming giant- I'm not like all the rest. I honestly tell you what as intelligent people why my firm will not service traders. You're running a business. I don't aim to service your business

If you're loyal to one firm - and afford them all your business, even when they're not always the best odds, then if you're restricted that's more than unfair

Jeff,

Do you have long term winners among your loyal customers ?

sport isn't affected by whether you have your accounts closed- if you're winning off bookies- the sport is losing. Write that one down.

But plenty are closed now without winning (just by beating the SP which gets shortened up for 300 quid by the same firms who restrict you), those same punters would probably be longterm losers, which would be good for the sport would it not? But they are restricted or not wanted so just leave the sport and bet elsewhere on other sports and never to be back.

What I guess you do is selectively bet with bookmakers only based on whenever they give you top rate- or an offer- You're not loyal to a bookmaker as a customer- you need to get real as to why they owe you a lunch? If you're loyal to one firm - and afford them all your business, even when they're not always the best odds, then if you're restricted that's more than unfair.

Why should a punter take 4/1 when 5/1 is available elsewhere - and give the book a free lunch? Are they not a bigger price because they want to take money on that said selection?? If you are on the tv saying "I cannot have this and will be laying for fortunes at top price" and then people ring you and take that top price what exactly have they done wrong? You want to take it on, and you have punters wanting to back it - that is what you wanted is it not? BUT if it wins you no longer want them because they haven't given you all their business?

Your being unrealistic in your expectations. You want us to remain loyal to you and I see no reason or benefit to reward you with the loyalty you demand. We are in business to make money. Same, I suspect as you. You're unporfitable to bookmakers- you get annoyed when they shut you down. Deal with the reality and stop whining.

I do not want any bookie to be loyal in a sense that they should lay me 500 on a 10/1 shot when they are biggest price, but surely they should lay more than the offered 83p. Let's also be fair here, when a few books are 10/1, others 9/1 and a couple at 8/1 - many punters cannot even get on at 8/1. I also do take shorter than top prices (and never take offers) as it's a price you have to pay to keep an account that bit longer - but still do not agree that I should have to.

@sportsadvisor Fair dues your responses as a punter i seldom agree with them but at least you present the case, other Bookmakers do not is this contempt or shame.? As "customers" we should keep asking and also making all aware that a max 10p @ the price currently offered to some of us might also become thier future experience.

This is all early morning betting and everyone knows that you can get on what you like on the exchanges 10 minutes before the off. It's high time they stopped this early morning nonsense and only open the markets around lunchtime.

Morning,foxy.
Yes I remember that, Wilson and his friends were missing out on what they thought should be their exclusive prices. You and I will remember when the bookmakers started these markets as an early warning system and it's become a menace for most punters.

it would be very interesting if betfair took notice of your suggestion {they wont due to greed}there is almost a generation of punters out there who never had the buzz of waiting for the firms to price up around 10am the variation was good for everybody they were happy days.

some of the firms have become lazy they let this exchange dictate the way they operate no imagination laddies in particular would struggle if we went back to the days before the exchanges helped them.

It would be lovely with Betfair not opening markets until lunchtime on raceday, but as said it's the greed of them why they open the day before. With the amount that has been matched by midday they surely are not gaining anything, and surely would earn more commission by doing this. It's sad how the books are dictated by here especially when it is someone who wants 4 quid on!
By:

I would love there to be no overnight/morning markets with the bookies. They are there purely for the bookies benefit as they let a select few on for pennies and adjust prices accordingly, saving money on proper traders.

There's simply no defending the advertising of prices, and not laying them TO ALL.
The alternative is to not put up prices, then there's no quibbling.

SPOT ON 1DKW,GEOFF IS TRYING TO DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE(NOT FOR THE FIRST TIME) AND IS USING THE SAME EXCUSE THE BETFREDS/365/HILLS/LADS AND THE REST OF THE ONLINE BLUFFERS USE TO STOP WINNING AND IN SOME CASES LOSING ACCOUNTS,ITS A TOTAL RED HERRING!IN MY 36 YEARS OF ONCOURSE BOOKMAKING I CAN HONESTLY SAY I HAVE NEVER KNOWN A PUNTER THAT HAS BEEN STOPPED AND HAD HIS/HER ACCOUNT CLOSED FOR BACKING WINNERS OR BEATING A PRICE??????????????? WITH THE INCEPTION OF THE NJPC TO REGULATE ONCOURSE BOOKMAKERS AND THE SALE OF PITCHES ONE OF THE FEW GOOD THINGS THEY DID WAS TO FORCE ONCOURSE BOOKMAKERS TO DISPLAY HOW MUCH THEY WOULD LAY A HORSE TO LOSE,SO INSTANTLY YOU COULD SEE WHO WOULD LAY A BET AND WHO WOULDNT,NON OF THIS ARBING NONSENSE WAS TOLERATED,WHATS IRONIC IS THAT GEOFF AND HIS FRONT LINE COLLEAGUES(PRE EXCHANGE) WERE THE BIGGEST ARBERS THAT HAVE EVER SET FOOT ON A RACECOUSE,THEY WOULD TAKE A £5K 10K 20K BET SAY AT 2/1 THEN THE FLOOR MEN WOULD BE BACKING IT BACK ON THE SECOND AND THIRD LINES AT 9/4 LaughLaughLaughLaugh,THE FACT IS GEOFF HAS FOLLOWED THE REST OF THE ONLINE BLUFFERS(THOU SHALT NOT WIN))WHICH IS DISAPPOINTING TO SAY THE LEAST,LOSERS NEED ONLY APPLY,WHICH IS BAD NEWS ALL ROUND FOR AN ALREADY DYING INDUSTRY!

@factmachine  "ONE OF THE FEW GOOD THINGS THEY DID WAS TO FORCE ONCOURSE BOOKMAKERS TO DISPLAY HOW MUCH THEY WOULD LAY A HORSE TO LOSE"

Shame that force was needed but now also needs must for The Odds Checker users and abusers. It is a very big Dragon we take on but i still live in hope that it can eventually be achieved. We will need to be brought together and encouraged to work together this is the aspect which currently prevents.I have e mailed odds checker giving examples of the tiny insulting amounts i am offered by there advertisers of course this will make no difference but if all of those receiving same treatment did then i think it might because there are now many and the number grows.

Why do bookies care anyway if a punter arbs or is it just a collective hate to see the punter win regardless type attitude?

Since we are talking about Geoff Banks here and he has the opportunity to respond if he so wishes, if I open a Geoff Banks account and find an arb where I can either back with him and back with another bookie or bookies in say a 2 or 3 outcome event to lock in a profit, or back with him and lay on here for a profit, why dos that bother him so much?

It's not as if every arb will win with his side of the bet and so cost him money every times, so why does he care if for example I lose money to him but win it from a rival? If anything I would have thought that would please him. Yes of course the odd one is likely to win with him but it won't be every time and if I could be sure my bets would win every time with him then I won't need to arb them in the first place?

Ima, tbf that's a very well made point .

I'd be absolutely amazed if Jeff hasn't got a ''hedging'' account with a bigger bookmaker !

He strikes me as a numbers man, at the end of the day bookmakers ''arbed'' long before the advent of The Exchanges !
By:

I know of a former rails bookmaker who was given large amounts of money to shorten prices in the ring ( pre Exchanges), the High Street firm were quite happy for him to have the value @ 2s whilst he shortened the price up in the ring to 6/4 or shorter !

By:

ima - it depends on if it's Geoff that's out of line.  If he has a too generous price, he'll accuse you of arbing and limit you to peanuts.  If it's the rival book that's out of line, you might get to place a few more bets before being booted for beating the SP on something.

Thanks for you responses gents and yeah, it does seem like bookies want to condemn punters for doing some of the very same things that they do themselves, which is a bit hypocritical really and it will be interesting to see if Geoff Banks comes back into the thread and chooses to give us the viewpoint from his and/or bookies in general side of the matter.

Jeff, doesn't like being ''arbed'' or used by shrewdie's, and I'd hazard a guess that the people who do this are by & large ex bookmakers !
By:
Rob_The_Bantam

Geoff can dress it up any way that he wants.  What it boils down to is that if you're better than his odds compilers, you'll get the heave ho.  If you bet with him irrespective of price and aren't good enough to win, you can (possibly) still bet with him.  A real Samaritan of the industry.

The thing is though, if Geoff Banks or for that matter any other bookie is out of line with the rest like you say Rob_The_Bantam, OK some punters will be arbing under those circumstances but others won't and might just take a different view and fancy the horse or just think that it's been priced up bigger by Geoff Banks due to him taking a view on it.....Like say, if it was ridden by Sean Levey for example!

I'm not crabbing what you are saying here either and just pointing out how some online bookies will ban or limit you when they decide you are an arber, yet with no chance of you having any comeback on that.
By:
Rob_The_Bantam
When: 23 May 16 22:59
ima - that's what most people have a problem with.  I can understand bookies having no time for people backing at 8/1 and laying at 7/1 if liquidity is decent, although they really should get some decent odds compilers and stop whining.  It's the fact that you're booted for having the audacity to back a horse that you fancy purely because it was a borderline arb.  Plus if there's any doubt, it's safer to just boot you anyway, as it might hurt the bottom line if they don't.
