R Jockeys Allowed to Bet?

Jockeys are banned from betting on horseracing only as far as I'm aware.  There are also rules about them not entering the betting areas of racecourses, I think.

Didn't Graham Bradley go and strike a bet with his silks still on? WAFDC

Does that include trotting and virtual?

Can they enter Tatts on their days off? I remember seeing one with a group of his friends and giving them advice.

Anyone have a link to the BHA rules on jockeys, trainers, staff and owners rules with regards to betting?

I'd be interested to know how far - if at all - they extend to amateur riders.

The authority ought to be the BHA Rules of Racing

but they're not obviously there and I'm not inclined to go digging.

@oldgit: The PJA link above has "A jockey cannot go into the betting during a race meeting."  (there's clearly a word or two missing).  No indication that it only applies if he's riding at that meeting.

I'd be interested to know if (at all) it extends to amateur riders , as I saw one have a bet at the Cheltenham festival this year.

53. Betting and betting contacts: professional riders
53.1 This Rule applies to Professional Riders only.
53.2 A Professional Rider must not


53.2.1 bet or lay a horse to lose any race with a Betting Organisation,
53.2.2 instruct another Person to do so, or
53.2.3 receive the whole or part of any proceeds of such a bet or lay.

53.3 A Professional Rider must not


53.3.1 associate on Racecourse Property with a Betting Organisation (or its representative), or
53.3.2 communicate directly or indirectly from such property with such an organisation (or its representative).

53.4 Paragraph 53.3 does not apply to any association or communication by the Professional Rider with the organisation (or representative) which


53.4.1 is part of the normal running of a race meeting (such as prize-giving and meeting sponsors),
53.4.2 is made with the owner of a horse for whom the Professional Rider is declared to ride, or
53.4.3 is expressly contemplated by Schedule (A)5 (information regarded as in the public domain).

53.5 A Professional Rider must not be present in the betting ring during a race meeting unless he can satisfy the Authority or the Stewards that he had good reason to be there.

They don`t gamble, they invest

when I used to have info about a sprinter owned by the son of the owner.. he told me the horse is so certain even the jockey is having 500 on it.....it won 7\1...........I put a fiver on it.......the jockey was one of the top 3 at the time

it was 9\1 not 7\1........just looked on the r\post

I don`t see why they are not allowed to bet on races they are not riding in.
