Best Mate paid the price with his lowly rating. Without him breaking the mould the horses following him who also didnt carry weight in handicaps would also have been penalised by the handicapper for it. Kauto Star who was in Best Mate's last fateful race at Exeter was the first to benefit as high ratings could be achieved outside of handicaps carrying 100 tons on your back.

Suppose if for hundreds of years the best athletes had been asked to carry a haversack of bricks on their back over 100 metres to achieve a time better than others with less weight in their haversack then that would become the benchmark of greatness. Doesnt mean its right as surely the best performers are those that can travel the fastest carrying the same weight in their haversack. Obviously the strongest (Geoff Capes over Kevin Keegan, equine Dessie) will excel in the past but the leaner faster types will succeed in the future in speed Championship races and suffer less injury with longer careers for others to enjoy watching them over many seasons (equine terms Best Mate and Kauto Star).

Yes he beat Le Coudray a decent 156 rated handicapper with BOS 3rd. Le Coudray was a decent handicapper racing at level weight with Best Mate.

It is all spin and scaremongering. I was listening to a radio programme aimed at youngsters and the "expert" on the matter was implying that a leave vote could make it more difficult for british teenagers to holiday in Ibiza or Greece, etc. Totally unfounded claims but had the teenagers panicking. ! Yes one of the favourite persuaders for us joining the Euro was to highlight how you wouldnt have to change your currency to go on holiday in Europe. Oh yes please I will trade in my freedom and rights to save ha.f an hour at the post office yeah right. |

Remember Obama and Cameron will have already discussed a deal whereby Obama supports staying in the EU in return for US Health corporations taking over vastly profitable private care once the Tories have managed to trash the NHS.

Have to laugh at eric morris banging on about the working man.
The working man had to work until he dropped in order to bring in a decent wage before the 48 hour week came in due to the EU. Plenty of working men weren't entitled to sick pay before that came in due to the EU. Plenty of working men weren't allowed a decent amount of leave until legislation was brought in due to the EU. Also have to laugh at those who go on about immigration being a reason to leave. Non EU immigration, something that supposedly can be controlled, is running higher than EU immigration. Getting out isn't going to bring about a reduction in immigration, it's merely going to reduce the numbers coming to this country from EU countries to be replaced by more coming on from the former colonies as was always the case before the EU ever came into the equation. |

they look after themselves hal ,we all know that ! I don't fully understand the pros and cons of staying or leaving ,but when politicians and the elite campaign for strongly for staying in then its usually to their benefit ,the working class may gets some scraps if they are lucky !

I've got to admit that when I first started looking into ''The Referendum'' I was very much agin, mainly because of the negative campaigning by the government and, getting big business & ffs Obama on board....
but, having looked at the all the arguments, I genuinely believe that that the vast majority of U K citizens would be financially worse off ! And, what ever way you look at it we've had peace in Europe for sixty years ! |

Wait until Turkey joins the EU, our border will stop at Syria...far too many immigrants stopping "the Jeremy Kyle" classes getting off their backside and getting a job, when you have people risking their lives to get to benefits Britain, you know somethings wrong. I have some sympathy with your view on Europe, eric, but comforting to read you still no eff-all about racing.
Best Mate wasn't 'punished' with a low rating because he didn't run in handicaps. He had a low rating because he beat Truckers fookin Tavern, was all out against Sir Rembrandt and, quite simply, wasn't that good. Certainly not 3 Gold Cups good anyway. Fyi Kauto Star didn't run in too many handicaps either but it didn't seem to do his rating any harm, did it? And why is it that "Hen's" soft touch approach gets your plaudits but you were fuming with Sir Henry for not running Frankel in the Derby? If ever a trainer correctly resisisted the call of a big race it was that man with that horse. Apart from that, spot on imo. |
