Why would he not deserve it? Certainly as much as Chris Hoy who dominated his sport for what, 18 months around an olympics and Bradley Wiggins dominated for even less got 1. Ap dedicated 20 years of his life to dominating a sport and i doubt very much we'll see his sort of numbers again. I'm not a huge AP fan but I can't think of (m)any sports people more deserving if you like that sort of thing.
