Your not wrong dealer. Troy won the derby by 7 lengths beating 2 group 1 winners or future group 1 winners. Ela Manna Mou was 4th and stayed in training as a 4 year old where he was voted European horse of the year. Always thought that was one of the best Derbies ever because of group 1 and future group 1 winners in it yet Carson didn't think Troy was the best he rode. Memory is going badly wrong but I think one of the placed horses was a French horse called Northern Baby. Onlooker will know.

Troys Derby for future high class winners is 1 of the best i can remember.
Timmy yes Northern Baby did run 3rd won the champion stakes later in year and finished 3rd in the eclipse to Dickens hill who was 2nd to troy in the derby.
Ela mana mou came into his own as a 4yr old as stated winning earl of sefton/ eclipse /Prince Of Wales and King George.
Behind Troy in that Derby was the winners of Irish and English 2000 gns and subsequent winners of the 2 legers Son Of Love and Niniski.

When Son Of Love won the Leger it was the front page splash of The Sporting Life. I believe they tipped it at 40/1. It was a poor result in the shops.

Re The Dealer, his big season was 1977/78, when he won five chases in a row culminating in the Embassy Premier Chase Final at Haydock in mid January. Timeform rated him the best novice that season on 145 and compared him favourably to Midnight Court, who went on to win the resecheduled 1978 Gold Cup in April.

Unfortunately he sustained an injury at Haydock that meant he missed the remainder of the season and he only made one further appearance on a racecourse, when he was pulled up lame in a hunter chase at Nottingham in February 1980, by which time he'd left Fred Winter.

In his absence, the 1978 Sun Alliance Chase was won by Sweet Joe (by 25 lengths!), but even that only earned him a Timeform rating of 139.
